Nekusar Draw Slug

Who doesn't like to draw cards? It's half of the equation that makes Simic so reliably good. So, let's cause some conflicted emotional responses by giving our opponents all the card draw they could ever want, but also causing them serious pain when they do so. They'll love you and hate you. Hopefully not hate you too much, though. This is a casual deck.

The core idea is to cause the entire table to draw a bunch of cards, but also punish them for doing so. Since we'll also be seeing a lot of our deck, we have some additional built in reliability, allowing us to use some card slots that would normally be required for redundancy for different tactics. Damage, discards and even infect designed to take advantage of our commander Nekusar, the Mindrazer by making people fear one of the core aspects of the game.

To whit, our gameplans:

We want our opponents to draw cards, so symmetrical card draw, which is normally a downside, is, at the very least, less of a downside for this deck.

This deck wouldn't be very good if we just let our opponents draw cards without some additional cost. Nekusar does a decent amount of heavy lifting, but more effects compound the issue, giving us surprising pressure

Yes, infect! Nekusar is the one dealing the damage, so giving him infect and then, say, wheeling is gonna put a decent amount of infect on the entire table possibly allowing you to sneak the win out from almost nowhere (some set up required)

One of the best way to cause people to draw a bunch of cards, but also a way to deny your opponents some of the resources you handed them. Hopefully they throw away something good, but regardless, they draw a bunch and take some pain. It's a win/win

This is not a symmetrical relationship to card drawing. We want to take full advantage of the fact that we're constantly drawing cards.

  • Harmonic Prodigy: Causes both of Nekusar's triggers to happen twice, resulting in drawing at least 3 cards per turn, and your opponents taking 2 damage (without additional effects, even) for each of those cards. It also provides more value from some other creatures
  • Helm of the Ghastlord: Our biggest jerk card. Attached to Nekusar, it prevents opponents from building up a hand if they don't already have answers, and gives us a whole bunch of cards to work with
  • Dictate of the Twin Gods: We're not doubling big damage, but we are double a lot of instances of little damage, which is basically the same thing. Kind of.
