Some cards you might want to look at include Fume Spitter, Abrupt Decay, Bone Splinters, as well as proliferate cards such as Grim Affliction.

sillywhiteboyThanks for checking out the deck and upvoting! I've thought about Abrupt Decay, possibly replacing Fatal Push... thanks for the suggestions!

PhthisisClock have you considered Necroskitter? Im not sure if its too slow or not but its out of bolt range and who doesnt love stealing opponents creatures?

nlidmaster, yes Necroskitter and a few others are being playtested now. I'll update with a bit of overhaul in description soon. Thanks for checking out my deck!!

I second the addition of Necroskitter. Can put counters on things itself with wither, and stealing almost all your opponent's dying creatures is a must-answer effect.

Obelisk Spider seems like another no-brainer. It puts counters on things, and has a stronger effect in this deck than Blood Artist, plus a bigger body with reach, all for one extra mana.

Midnight Banshee could be a good finisher if you find games going long enough to play her. Sort of a nonbo with your Ambush Viper but otherwise doesn't hurt you at all, and combos with both the previously mentioned cards and Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons.

I'm liking how this build is running right now. I recently pulled one Incremental Blight to make room for one Black Sun's Zenith.

Mainboard may change soon by replacing Tragic Slip with 3x Abrupt Decay.

Another big change "may" happen in the sideboard... thinking of pulling Banewhip Punisher and one copy of Dispossess to make room for four copies of Unearth.

Just realized that Unearth would re-categorize this deck as Vintage... not sure I want to do that.

Hey @PhthisisClock, I updated the Lands (23) for a Modern mana base, and I included my sideboard dedicated against Affinity and Enchantments. I took out the Ambush Vipers, because I'd rather run Cast Down or Go for the Throat.

My Maybeboard includes Undying creatures, because this synergies well with -1/-1 Counters, so that the Undying creatures recur infinitely. Eldrazi Monument/Akroma's Memorial are AMAZING for Token strategies.

Let me know if you find any other good -1/-1 counter cards, like Banewhip Punisher. I'm thinking that you can get the number of creatures up to (23), this could be a Collected Company deck.

Here is the deck:

I am also considering splashing White for Grind / Dust. With modern fetchlands and Channeler's Initiate, it wouldn't be too hard to get a one-sided boardwipe with Grind to Dust. Are there any other good white cards for this deck?

@SomeFish... Ambush Viper and Throne of the God-Pharaoh have been teetering on being replaced for a little while. Viper has come in handy a few times, and Throne was amazing a couple of times, but I think the theory of Throne is better than it usually plays out. Viper is nice, but could easily be replaced by something like Cast Down.

As far as increasing lands, I've not yet needed more than 21 but that's because I usually draw into Channeler Initiate and most people in my meta don't waste removal on it.

AFA splashing white, idk... I was attempting to build this as strictly golgari but Fate Transfer is technically both U and B... but Transfer has been essential to this build. I'm actually going to bump Transfer up to a 4x but have been working on two other decks at the moment.

Thanks for checking it out, I appreciate the link to my deck. Maybe this build will evolve into the powerhouse I have always thought it could be.

@PhthisisClock I was able to scrim with the deck online for a bit and I definitely agree with all your statements. I ran more lands because I wanted to use the manland, Treetop Village, but I can see 21 lands working.

Yeah Fate Transfer is amazing. It's what makes this deck so fun! Obelisk Spider works well as a Throne-Lite, and so far the Spider has won me more games than the Necroskitter.

I also built a Collected Company Version of the deck. It's very fun summoning a Flash 5/5 as a blocker. however, multiple times I had to CoCo only one creature because Hapatra is Legendary. I also had to cut out Abrupt Decays and the two enchantments (all three are insanely good) and CoCo makes sideboarding worse, since I have a Sorcery based sideboard, not a creature based sideboard. I'll keep brewing since I still think the Collected Company version is a bit weak, but your main deck is extremely fun to play. It's only a bit weaker than tradition Golgari Rock (with Tarmagoyfs etc), so I think it's rather viable.

@SomeFish... thanks so much for the discussion... I used to run Obelisk Spider because when it was spoiled, immediately I thought "this is gonna be great!"... but it was truly underwhelming in my meta, ymmv... Throne of the God-Pharaoh is really strictly better than O Spider, only because of late-game scenarios... I can see Necroskitter being a sideboard card, because as much as I love it, it is totally worthless against token decks.

Ambush Viper moved to sideboard, Banewhip Punisher moved to mainboard. Considering dropping either or both in favor of Creeping Corrosion, Cast Down, and/or Parallel Lives. Going to experiment with different things over the next few weeks. This build is "so close", but not yet as powerful as I hope for.

Seems like every time I consider dropping Throne of the God-Pharaoh, I have a string of games where it dominates. It is definitely more useful in multi-player than 1v1 games. Last weekend it abruptly ended a 3-player game, but admittedly the other 2 players were more interested in shutting each other down than with me. Incremental Blight and Necroskitter netted 3 creatures on T5, then swung T6 with 8 creatures (half at each opponent)... dropped Throne right after combat phase and dealt 8 damage to each opponent. Neither one saw it coming (too preoccupied with each other).

Maybe Rogue's Passage would be nice for attacking with Hapatra

Updated list today. Added 4th Fate Transfer and moved one Necroskitter to sideboard replacing 1x Dispossess.

Just moved to new area, attending FNM:Modern tonight, will see how it holds up.

Fared pretty well last night. Went 2-0 vs Goblins, 2-1 vs mono R aggro, 1-2 vs Tron, and 0-2 vs mono U merfolk tribal. Lucked out with round 1 bye, so finished 7-5 and 3rd place out of 11.

The Urza lands of Tron really made it rough... so much early ramp... Tron was not really represented in my last meta, and this deck is just not designed to face it.

Mono U merfolk surprised me... I had terrible draws both games, but Islandwalk ended up killing me. Opponent enchanted one of my lands making it an island, and I couldn't get to Wickerbough Elder to do anything about it. Totally underestimated the merfolk build.

Overall pretty pleased with the build... will likely concentrate on other builds for awhile but this one so far is good enough to leave alone. For now.

They just revealed a bad ass reach deathtouch guy i think Would help this deck in m19, it says whenever a creature dies each opponent loses 1 life

Phillygreenman007... Poison-Tip Archer... CMC is a little high but definitely worth consideration. Thanks for the heads up!!

Added two copies of Temporal Extortion to sideboard, just to add a little more disruption and headache.

Flooremoji... I like Crumbling Ashes but in some cases it could hurt this build... for example if I have it in play I'm going to think twice before dropping Ammit Eternal or Channeler Initiate. Ashes is a great card but I'd rather have the choice to destroy target permanent, and Ashes doesn't give that choice. Blowfly Infestation is another mandatory effect that could potentially hurt the build... but it's manageable.

I would recommend something like Kitchen Finks instead of the Throne of the God-Pharaoh, since the incidental drain off Throne doesn't do much, and the life gained from Finks (and the recursion) works well. Love the deck, +1!
