Narset, the Quiet Storm

Commander / EDH*

Ballin_Like_Stalin

Being a fan of Jeskai/America EDH with a ball-breaking Ruhan of the Fomori control deck for several years now, you can imagine how excited I was for Narset, Enlightened Master to come along.

I've seen a good number of Narset builds that aim to combo with extra turn cards, but I personally find that approach unfun and oppressive, so I'm endeavoring to tweak that paradigm with a more equipment voltron based idea version of the deck.

Keeping the previous statement in mind, I do plan on playing Temporal Mastery as my one extra turn card, because sometimes a blue mage just has to Explore the possibilities of a more productive early game.

We win by giving out pretty monk lady a slew of nasty equipment and cracking heads with commander damage. The five Swords of Mirrodin, Batterskull, and Basilisk Collar help Narset survive the carnage. Argentum Armor is particularly nasty with our extra combat step cards, and Darksteel Plate helps out little lady survive wrath effects. I'm purposefully avoiding Whispersilk Cloak, as Narset already has hexproof and there are very few creatures in the deck to equip the cloak to when we want to boost Narset further. I've been back and fourth on Sunforger, and would love to hear everyones thoughts on the card. If we tweak the deck to perform with the hammer, I think we could find some promising results.

Personal Tutor, Mystical Tutor, and Enlightened Tutor round out the tutor suite, and help us flip whatever we like off the top of the deck.

Strionic Resonator is a pet card of mine, and suits our purposes here beautifully.

Scroll Rack, Sensei's Divining Top, Thassa, God of the Sea, Jace, the Living Guildpact, Brainstorm, Mystic Speculation, and Future Sight all help us control what we flip over when Narset turns sideways. I would LOVE a Jace, the Mind Sculptor to brainstorm every turn, but I need to eat food and drink gin like everyone else, so I'll get one eventually.

Aggravated Assault and Sword of Feast and Famine combo out, if you feel like being a douchebag. Aurelia, the Warleader, Waves of Aggression, and World at War also pitch in to help us gain value from swinging and make people sad.

The deck has glaring weaknesses, though, and input as to how to make them more bearable would be VASTLY appreciated.

For one, thaximundar usually just straight out beats us, as does a well built Shattergang Brothers deck. To fight off those problematic commanders, I'm debating Oblation, Hinder, and Spell Crumple to join Terminus and Chaos Warp in our tuck suite.

Green decks that can outramp us and blow up our equipment are also threatening. Since we have a hard time really doing much before turn 4, I'm debating on bringing in more mana rocks and playing Sun Titan to recur our swords.
