My prototype build for Elemental tribal in edh. Horde of Notions was a recent pull from Modern Masters 2015, and I decided to build the deck.

The deck is meant to act as sort of a toolbox style deck, using Horde of Notions to recast the right spell for the job from the graveyard.

Card choices explained:

Titania, Protector of Argoth - Playing 5 colors can be tough because of the manabase, so naturally most people play fetchlands. While I don't have the budget for the "real" fetches, I can still fix my colors with the 7 fetches I use here. Titania churns out extra value from these lands as well as the Strip Mine, Krosan Verge, Ghost Quarter, Crystal Vein and Haunted Fengraf.

Sun Titan - While not an elemental, Sun Titan finds his place in the deck by recurring my sac-lands for more value from Titania, along with many other valuable permanents.

Smokebraider - The PERFECT mana dork for a WUBRG elemental list and assures a turn 3 General. Never build Horde of Notions without it!

Evolutionary Leap - A way to turn an elemental that has served it's purpose into something else, or a handy sac-outlet to dodge exile-based removal or just chuck an elemental into the yard to recast with Horde of Notions.

Thicket Elemental - Pay 7 mana, get a 4/4 and another random dude? Works for me.

Crib Swap - Exile-based removal that can be cast from the yard with my general. Value.

Teleportal - Make all my dudes unblockable and capable of alpha-striking one or all of my opponents for the win.

Armillary Sphere - Grab two basics that I may be missing. Goes well with Exploration.

Wispmare, Shinewend - Gets rid of annoying enchantments. Plain and simple.

Stingmoggie - Can blow up artifacts or my opponent's precious Gaea's Cradle.

Stigma Lasher - Shuts down those stupid lifegain decks all on his own.

Festercreep - A board wipe for 1/1 tokens and utility dudes.

Fertilid - Ramp and mana-fixing on a body that can be reused with my general.

Played a 1v1 match aganint my girlfriend tonight, with a 2-0 record. Some thoughts:

  • The Great Aurora is a fun card that, in 1v1, gives you a massive advantage and can save your hide against a full board.

  • Though Horde is a great value engine, he isn't necessary to victory. He's a solid beater, but his ability wasn't used as much as I'd hoped it would be. Perhaps against a more removal-heavy his recursion would be more relevant.

  • If you don't play really aggressively from the get-go or combo off quickly, the deck can and will steamroll you.

  • Titania, Protector of Argoth generates so much value if she gets out.

  • Torrent Elemental takes over the game with alpha strikes.

  • Stingmoggie and Shinewend are surprisingly useful.

  • Avenger of Zendikar is OP, especially when combined with Fertilid.

  • Ghost Quarter can help fix your colors in a pinch.

  • Mana Bloom is GROSSLY underrated, and actually an awesome card in WUBRG.
