My first shot at a budget combo deck, for those that are unaware, the combo is Duskmantle Guildmage + Mindcrank
in order to do infinite damage and mill. In order to fetch the parts of our combo, we use Dimir Infiltrator to search our library for either Mindcrank or our Duskmantle mage. In order to control the field until our combo is ready, we use removal spells like
Smother
, Go for the Throat, and Dismember while using Duress to remove possible threats to our combo from our opponent's hand. Once we have our combo on the field, certain opponents are going to try and stop our combo with counters, removal spells, or the like, we use Spell Pierce
+
Swan Song
to prevent them from getting this removal off.
In the worst case scenario where we can't get our combo off, our alternate win condition is slapping that sweet Runechanter's Pike onto one of our three unblockable creatures and swinging in for damage until we win.
In order to fix our mana, we use the budget options of Dimir Signet and one of the unpopular storage lands:
Dreadship Reef
(Always remember to keep your mana open during your opponent's turn, waiting until their end step to add a storage counter to your lands, and don't forget that to remove storage counters, you don't need to tap the land, therefore you can always tap the land for mana, use that mana to pay the cost to remove storage counters, and get the mana you need.)
