"Some goblins are expendable. Some are impossible to get rid of. But he's both-- at the same time! Show

Welcome to Moonrat! My take on the Blood Moon / Pack Rat shell. A spicy Rakdos meatball that is trying to get the most value out of mutual discarding and goodstuff.

According to tappedout, this deck is 100% competitive! I am not sure how their algorithm works but it's pretty sweet. All joking aside this is not a T1 deck by any means but it's a hoot to play. :)

  • Dark Confidant: He is great for card advantage and most of our spells are under 3 CMC and so the downside works well with all of our self discard. Depending on my playtesting, could remove some looting effects for this guy.
  • The Rack/Shrieking Affliction: This deck is not necessarily trying to keep our opponent handsize low. These choices actually have some anti-synergies with Waste Not as we want to get full value from our Burning Inquiry etc...

I do need to get quite a few more games in to really hash out the mess that is the sideboard.

The moonrat (Echinosorex gymnura) is a species of mammal in the family Erinaceidae. It is the only species in the genus Echinosorex. They are small, largely carnivorous animals which, despite their name, are not closely related to rats or other rodents.

My spirit animal.

Any suggestions are always welcome! I'm pretty happy with the initial list but please let me know what you think!

Squee just wants some love so,

Sweet deck. If you were to make this deck as competitive as possible, disregarding cost, Lilianas should definitely go in, maybe take out a Faithless Looting and a Terminate or two Lootings to fit her in. Also rather than playing bolts, I would play four Fatal Push. It can hit a lot more things than Bolt, and since you're trying to win with grindy cards like Pack Rat rather than with burn I think Fatal Push is just much better. Many decks are dropping bolt for push as well, so that's also some incentive to replace it.

hungry000, hey thank you! I completely agree with you on all of your points. I do like the bolts as they provide some additional reach but Fatal Push is just too good. Thank you for the advice!

Just playtested this deck against my Howlpack Aggro deck. It worked really well. There was a moment where you had 3 Waste Not and 10 zombies on board. Mayor of Avabruck  Flip was my token salvation in that instance. Good all-around deck. Thoroughly enjoyed playing against it. :)

CavusCanis, that's awesome! You really can get a lot of value out of Waste Not. I feel like certain aggro matches might be tough for the build but I'm glad it worked out. What did you use to playtest?

I used my paper werewolf deck, which is Howlpack Aggro using Destructive Revelry and Lightning Bolt instead of Lifecrafter's Bestiary and Vanquisher's Banner.

I just realized, that is what this deck is going for, except there's no Endless Ranks of the Dead. I'd encourage going down Blood Moon for the sake of EROTD in grindy creature matchups. It's a sideboard idea that may have a pretty big payoff.

I also think you could go down on a few basics and possibly a Blood Crypt in favor of 2-3 Blackcleave Cliffs since it's pretty painful to get dual colored lands with ur current manabase. Since there are more nonbasics youll be able to go down a mountain, and from there 1-2 swamps/1 Blood Crypt (personally I'd go down 1 swamp, 1 mountain, 1 Blood Crypt). Just be sure to fetch out basic swamps early on if it's a good Blood Moon matchup since it's harder to hit basics.

I would also consider replacing the Lavaclaw Reaches with Mutavault because of its ability to power up your Pack Rats for just one mana. I think the non-colored mana should be ok since it's only a two colored deck, but whatever you feel comfortabe with is fine.

Oh and maybe go with a split of 2 Blackcleave Cliffs and 1 Dragonskull Summit if you decide to do that.

Hey thanks for the tips! Mana bases are always so finicky to get right. I do have some mutavaults laying around so I'll adjust the list! Do you think 20 lands should suffice? Or stick with the 21?

December 17, 2017 12:09 p.m.

Since this is a pretty grindy deck I'd stick with 21, maybe go to 22 if you seem to get mana screwed too much. But the best way to determine the right land count is by testing and trying out different numbers, so you should stick with what you find from your own experiences.

Thank you for all the help hungry000. :)
