Maybeboard

Aggro-tempo deck looking to deny mana and tax spells long enough for us to 'get there'.

Ghost Quarter + Leonin Arbiter + Path to Exile to help tempo us along or soft lock opponents.

Aether Vial + Blade Splicer + Flickerwisp to act as combat tricks, build board state, deploy end step gas.

Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and any castable non-creature spell to aid our soft lock and disrupt their answers and threats.

Restoration Angel paired with any of Flickerwisp or Thraben Inspector or Leonin Arbiter or Blade Splicer all act as instant speed flexibility. We can do nifty things with Flickerwisp to swing combat, instantly redeploy a 3/3 first striker through Blade Splicer or even double down on the tax effect of Leonin Arbiter .

My sideboard is tuned to my LGS and their current climate of non-interactive races. I'm happy to report that Remorseful Cleric and the additional Relic of Progenitus I ran in my last event helped me get over my Phoenix losing streak. Which have been my only match loses going back a few weeks.

Notably, I have left out artifact hate. Seems outrageous, but all the other aggro strategies seem to have chased off most affinity players.

Likewise, control has taken a dip so I have edited my board accordingly. I dropped Eldrazi Displacer as it dies to Lightning Bolt and is often to slow to help me. I added the Serra Avenger and Remorseful Cleric to be aggressive flying threats with the cleric acting as an instant speed answer to Arclight Phoenix I think Maybe I should go up to two of them. Now Testing 3

In the future, I would like to add two extra Horizon Canopy and one Eiganjo Castle

Match 1 Bogles:

G1) W - Disrupted his lands and Thalia taxed his aura's and he crumpled to the pressure.

G2) L - Put down solid pressure, kept him on the defensive and removed first spirit dancer while he deployed a torpor orb. Then he dropped a second threat and aura into coronet and I failed to hit a dusk.

G3) L - Mulled to five. He torpor orbed on curve into coronet again.

Match 2 Vannifar combo:

G1) W - Through down quick flying pressure and beat him down before he could combo.

G2) L - Brought in Mirran's to try shed blockers, and graffdigger's to try interrupt the combo. I got out two arbiters and he used deputy of detention to sweep them both away.

G3) L - Kept two arbiters and drew a third. First was abraded, the next two got hit by deputy of detention. He got down spellskite and I couldn't stop it from there.

Definitely needed more flying pressure to close out the game

Match 3 U/R Phoenix:

G1) W - Smuggler's copter filtered my action and Flickerwisp disrupted TiTi long enough for me to close out the game

G2) W - Mulled to 6 into grafdigger's, arbiter and path. Second graf drawn, and looter scooter chipped away while he dig for action. He angered me before lethal, then I redeployed with Brimaz. He got blockers and the Brimaz token allowed me to attack into poor trades to give me the extra damage needed on the go wide.

Match 4 GB Rock:

G1) W - Awesome game one. T1 Vial and Mutavault. T2 Attacked in and deployed Thraben Inspector. T3 played splicer. T4 swung into confidant who had just revealed pulse. He blocked my mutavault and golem not realizing the first strike totem. Damaged resolved and then he pushed the golem trying to say damage didn't happen. Rode out the board state.

G2) W - Dropped crusader on curve and it took down Lili. flashed resto to flicker mirran into a block against tarmogoyf, scooze, and grim flayer. I ran the board after dusking all his remaining creatures, stooping his ooze from eating more. He languished crusader. I dropped double splicer. He oozed. I baited him into another big ooze to dusk it. He damnation-ed, I dawned, kept pressure up and then he played Kalitas into my Path for the win.

Match 5 U/R Phoenix:

G1) L - Kept a solid aggro hand. He dropped three TiTi. Got down wisps that slowed his horrors. He mid game looted into double phoenix to block all my threats. Died with him on 3.

G2) L - Kept no grave hate in lieu of a bonkers hand. Vial, Thalia, Avenger, Wisp. I baited out two lightning bolts that I fizzled. Had him dead, then he opted, looted into a second phoenix and had the gut shot for wisp and top decked out of it. Valuable lesson here, not even the best tax draw is keep-able against Phoenix.

As a general thought, looting is acting as a renanimate that brings two creatures with no real draw back. It felt super bad as I played an excellent hand, and I, in my opinion, played it very well. But he gets to cast a one mana sorcery that loots and reanimates soooo what can I do?

I think after this disappointing session, I have learned that I need more flying pressure to get through clogged up boards. I think remorseful cleric is a necessary 4 of.

Match 1 Living End Combo:

G1) W - Turn one Grissy put into the yard. I had a path to protect from the combo, but it never came before my turn two remorseful cleric took over.

G2) W - Nearly the exact same play. Kept a double path hand and had remorseful cleric to close it out.

Match 2 Vannifar Pod:

G1) L - Kept a land disruption hand, they played 4 mana dorks and I couldn't slow it down.

G2) L - Kept a disruptive hand and avoided the combo, instead I lost to a value grind of Thragtusks.

I had played this guy before the event and went 2-0, arbiter was key. Definitely weak to the library tutoring combos outside of arbiter.

Match 3 BR Burn:

G1) L - No mainboard life link makes this hard.

G2) W - Mulled down to 4, had to keep a one land (horizon canopy) but had Kor Firewalker , they drew cold and I pathed two of my own creatures to avoid searing blazes.

G3) W - Mulled to 5, kept a ghost quarter arbiter hand and a Firewalker. They had one land, I slowed played the arbiter, played it on three lands to strip the land, he never drew out.

Match 1 Grixis Death Shadow:

G1) L - Kept a hand of spells that all died and lost to some big ol' 10/10s

G2) W - Kept a hand of disruption and a Mirran Crusader on top of my library. Arbiter ate a bolt and stripped a red source and fliers got there.

G3) W - Landed another crusader, and had to trade some inspectors on the ground in the face of 2 DS and a zombie fish, but an end step resto got me there

Match 2 Mono-Red Phoenix:

G1) L - Died turn 3 technically, but three phoenix on turn two was the culprit

G2) W - Turn one relic, turn two rest in peace. Adios.

G3) W - Turn one Relic, sideboard finks kept us out of threat range.

Match 3 Bogles:

G1) W - Turn one vial to set up a flicker trick later worked out. removed the first strike armor to trade a splicer and then swarmed him.

G2) L - I felt good about my mirran keep and Dusk/Dawn, but a turn two torpor orb ruined most of my value plays to stay alive, never got the fourth land

G3) L - Same deal Torpor, and I chumped several turns for my Dusk but it was too late. Each game he had Kor spirit dancer, had it been a normal hexproof fellow I feel things would have been fine.

Match 4 Amulet Titan:

G1) What great fun! Main board is beautifully set up for it. I kept a bad first hand except for Leonin Arbiter then drew another to slow his combo, after paying for the tax on the Titan search, he couldn't activate Sunhome fortress, thus he only connected for 18. A delightful swarm of weenies got me there.

G)2 Even better, kept a Ghost Quarter hand then I drew: quarter, arbiter, arbiter, arbiter. Next.

Match 1 Bant Spirits:

G1) W - Kept him from critical mass whilst I stock-piled blade splicers and their metallic creations.

G2) W - Grafdigger's Cage to counter Collected Company worked well, he had a bunch of Noble Hierarch s but no pay off.

Match 2 U/R Phoenix

G1) W - Stripped a red source early and managed to path the TiTi prior to the flip to keep the pressure up. Brimaz, King of Oreskos dodges bolt!

G2) L - I kept a poor hand with no colored mana for a relic, he forced me to crack said relic. Then dumped more phoenix's into the bin the next turn.

G3) L - See above... I'm looking to learn from these moments.

Match 3 B/G Rock:

G1) W - Smuggler's Copter drew some removal for me to get down a Leonin Arbiter into a Ghost Quarter and Path to Exile .

G2) W - Mirran Crusader is a house.

Round 1 Mono Red Phoenix

G1) W - Thalia, blade splicer, wisp put way too much pressure on him

G2) W - Kor firewalker gained me so much life as he cantripped through his hand for one phoenix, which i vialed in remorseful to eat.

1-0

Round 2 Bant Spirits

G1) W - Heavily hindered his board with thalia (pathed) into leonin + quarter. He never played a threat.

G2) L - Now I see his actual deck, supreme phantom stalled me and my x/1's.

G3) L - He made a misplay and he was exposed for the blow out. Needed PTE. Cracked canopy and whiffed, drew the PTE on my draw...

1-1

Round 3 U/W control

G1) W - Super quick aggro start with Thalia.

G2) L - He stabilized with terminus on my full board, went Jace into Teferi.

G3) L - Double terminus and a verdict was too much for me to push through

1-2

Round 4

U/R restore balance

G1) I knew this guy from the last chance trial, he always referenced his card, and he kept referring to artifact when he played balance.

Anyway, game one I got to fizzle a fetch with arbiter and GQ him off of double red.

G2) Going from our previous matches, I knew i needed smuggler's copter and vial, got both plus thalia.

He did fire off electrodominance without greater gargadon just to kill thalia, then he slwoly developed as foretold while taking chip damage. He got the gargadon and went for balance. I didn't remvoe my two vials or copter to his confusion. Judge helped me clarify and i dropped in a splicer to crack back for 6 and the win.

2-2

Round 5

Naya Burn

G1) W - Thalia forced him to tap out for a spell on his turn, I had arbiter and GQ for a counter, he floundered.

G2) W - Firewalker stabilized my life in the mid teens, he looked at my vial on two at one point and was clearly thinking about cracking his fetch after casting spells. He went for it and arbiter off vial stripped the land, another GQ. Had the sense he wasn't familiar with taxes.

3-2

Round 6

U/W Control

G1) Had Thalia in the opener, and achieved some solid pressure before he could get to 5 mana for wrath and cryptics.

G2) Mulligan to find vial, or thalia or copter and was rewarded with copter and vial. Helped me not over commit, used mutavault and copter to chip and loot. Forced a bad cryptic and I got to land gideon. He found his terminus, but with Gideon, vial and copter he folded next turn.

4-2

Round 7

G/B Rock

G1) W - I wrecked his lands, nuff said.

G2) L - Using assassin's trophy and field of ruin in one turn he reduced me to one land... wrecked

G3) W - Grindy match, he had pushed a mutavault to edict my mirran crusader off of lili. I got out splicer, he removed the token. He went to remove splicer later and wisp blanked it, got 7 on the crack back for the win.

5-2

Round 8

Amulet Titan

G1) T1 cavern on human had me scared, he cast a trinket mage on t3, defo not humans, vial in arbiter and he scooped.

G2) I didnt lay down any land disruption, i pulled a flame slash out of him for my arbiter. However, he stabilized the board with hornet queen and I couldn't force through damage.

G3) I went up to all copies of mirran crusader to be my win con. Mulled for a better hand and hit a crusader and a lone GQ, but drew some good action. Evenetually I had gotten a nice Mindcensor flash in and dropped arbiter for extra help. He started tutoring hard for EE or Ballista or Titan but had several blanks, all the while paying for his summoner pacts. I traded some creatures for his titan and he had hornet queen but crusader got in nearly the entire sum of damage against him. MVP was clearly mindcensor.

6-2

Made the cut!

Round 9

Dredge

G1) L - I kept an accetpable hand and was crushed by 4 creeping chill and two amalgams in the first three turns.

G2) L - Got cheeky with crusader and worship keep, had double crusader so i figured hold one back for after conflagrate, but he had a nuts draw again and my plan was flawed. Think I had just been relieved to make the cut and didn't give the game proper care. That said, he crushed his hands and played a good hand as well as he could.

6-3

Round 10

Naya Burn

G1) L - Burn hand doing burn things.

G2) W - He had a triple GG start and he hit 5 lands off my top for me over three turns. this fueled a huge field army for me and he tried to race but he got crushed by golems.

G3) W - Finks to stabilize and trade with a guide, wisp to reset it.

7-3

Round 11

U/B Mill

G1) W - stripped his only color source after he pushed Thalia. He played a fetch but couldn't crack. He missed a land drop for a turn and by that point was buried.

G2) W - He got osme active orbs and some good mill in, got me down to 20 ish cards left, he went for a crypt incursion to buy him time to my immense board state, but remorseful cleric sac exile my yard only let him get a few life and he was dead on board.

8-3

Round 12

Grixis Death Shadow

G1) W - I applied early pressure and he kept a poor hand for this match-up. closed him out quick. I assume he had some stubborn denials dead in hand or something.

G2) L Inquistion, thoughtsieze, and Push wrecked my early game and I never recovered from the angler and DS beats. I went for horizon canopy crack to dig for my two of condemn, much like my spirits match, missed by one card!

G3) W - I misplayed my sequence, went crusader, should have gone cleric. He got jace to flip, and reduced crusaders power but found bolt for it anyway. He played several removal pieces and got out angler quick and later shadow. I got wisp in to reset the jace and the cleric i had removed his graveyard. He had more removal for wisp, and then more for resto, resto, resto... all cast as chumps. I found a path to avoid lethal, he got me to one with just snap and Jace. Found inspector, clue into finks. Then found condemn and splicer. Finks gained me life out of bolt range and I turned the tables.

9-3

Round 13

Naya Burn

G1) L - He had the nuts both times. G2) L - Game two I mulled for firewalker and should have been more patient and led cleric. He had the path and that was that.

9-4

Round 14

U/W Control

G1) W - Thalia and copter had me keep. I led copter, then thalia crew ( had drawn second thalia) He pathed copter. Got out arbiter. He went for snap path on thalia. I played thalia two ( also drew thalia three). Found a GQ for his fifth land drop (colonnade) scooped.

G2) W - Vial plus two Thalia in opening hand. I felt very good about my play in this one. Got in an end step wisp to send him to 3 lands for the turn, where he missed a land drop, got back tapped colonnade and then I drew the arbiter to go with my GQ and got him down to 3. He never got passed 4 lands untapped and he needed five for his cryptic and verdict he showed me in his hand after.

10-4

Round 15

U/R Phoenix

G1) W - The deck I had been so sure I would see, my main reason for clerics! my final test. Thalia and splicer went wide on him and slowed a TiTi flip. Wisp reset the TiTi and I used double mutavault to get super wide for lethal.

G2) L - I hit condemn, thalia, RIP. I thought I couldn't lose. He had t2 TiTi. T2 rip from me. He cantripped but didn't go for it ( keeping up bolt) I play thalia expecting her to die and had condemn for horror next turn. He went for it and spilled his hand and I removed the horror. He stablized later with two crackling drakes...

G3) W - Had Vial, Thalia into GQ arbiter. He dug for land drops and kept alive. I used wips to rest a TiTi again. Then he got a double phoneix off of looting. He held back to block. I attacked in with wisps. He traded with me. Post main I put in cleric. He went for the TiTi flip and on the horror trigger I exiled his graveyard. He repsected my open vial and didn't swing in. ( had nothing ) sand bagged lands. I went with two thraben inspectors and had mutavault out so i had blockers and a chance to draw. I found resto and passed turn. He went for the bolt on one inspector (he was at 2) and I used the angel to blank it. Had lethal in air and on the ground with mutavault!
