Monoblue Hellbent

Legacy*

SadisticMystic

This is a fine example of a synergistic deck that modern Magic design philosophy has done almost nothing to facilitate. For 14 years, there were absolutely no changes to the decklist, because none of the new cards that came out really played into this niche: they prefer having all the power on the cards be readily apparent on the surface, instead of asking players to consider how they could make "drawbacks" like these mesh together. Not to mention that the rewards for jumping through those hoops wasn't even very far about the normal curve as the years went on.

Finally, the release of Geralf's Masterpiece in Shadows over Innistrad gave the deck a higher-end play to look forward to at last (so it doesn't simply fold to a single 4/5). And then the very next set gave it Lupine Prototype, a cheaper, larger version of Veiled Crocodile. Could this possibly be the start of a trend, or just a temporary, illusory reprieve brought on by Emrakul's madness?
