This is where we fight! This is where they die!
The goal is to power out a turn 3-4 Obelisk of Urd, naming Soldiers, and winning on turn 5-6. Spear of Heliod, Hall of Triumph and Inspired Charge are anthems #5-9.
Kytheon, Hero of Akros makes the deck credible. Every creature is a threat with all the anthems, but now your opponent will need to consider holding back targeted removal in favor of hitting Kytheon. This gives the deck a tempo advantage previously unseen.
I've been playtesting a Boros version of this deck on MTGO, but could not get the mana base to work. Splashing red brought Akroan Crusader , Satyr Hoplite and Trumpet Blast to the main, with Roast and Scouring Sands to the side. The trouble was drawing a Temple of Triumph early and being put a turn behind. I considered working in either Unknown Shores or even Radiant Fountain when I finally decided the red splash could just be dropped entirely.
Consul's Lieutenant seems pretty bad-ass, but I think I'll keep Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit for the bolster in an attempt to combat Languish, and Vanguard of Brimaz until rotation for the vigilant Cat Soldier tokens.
I cannot foresee Battle of Zendikar delivering many 1-drop soldiers to replace the Theros-block soldiers, nor replacements for the mighty Obelisk of Urd or Launch the Fleet. So, this final stretch of Theros-Tarkir Standard will be the last battlefield for these valiant soldiers, now led by Kytheon, Hero of Akros . This is where we fight! This is where they die!
