Mono Red Midrange

Standard Mono-Red

samuraizack

Sideboard

Punish all the three color decks with my lethal mono red deck. I feel like red has a lot of threats that are simply mono colored and that it could be well positioned, especially against the three color decks that are ever so popular.

The deck has early game removal in the form of magma jet, lightning strike, and crater's claw if need be. It also helps shut your opponent out casting the Eidolon and you start casting your >4 mana spells. Crater's claw can trigger off stormbreath, phoenix, sarkhan, and sometimes rabblemaster, so it's a decent finisher. Tormenting voice is in there when you start to get flooded on lands. You have good filtering options with magma jet, fated conflagration and tormenting voice.

Sideboard:Easy to sideboard against other aggro decks: Side in anger of the gods, magma jet, magma spray, and arc lightning.

Against midrange/ control type decks, side in the chandra's, craters claw, and fated conflagration's. Chandra will be your best friend in this match up.

After some extensive testing vs a variety of decks, I went about 7-3 (iirc) piloting this deck. It's performed quite well. I've lost two games vs Abzan, going 1-2 in each. Both games were right down to the wire but Siege Rhino is a hell of a card. The life gain is just so hard and mono red has nothing to negate the rhino. It's even tougher when on the draw and they have a turn 3 rhino and you can't even fated conflagration it on your turn. That's usually 7 full damage taken from a 4 mana spell with this deck. Eidolon of the Great Revel is still a beast, you can usually eek out 4 damage with him.

Against aggro, this deck is quite strong. They don't have enough large burn spells to deal with the phoenix/ dragon/ and sarkhan. A highlight of one of my games was harness by force'ing an opposing goblin rabblemaster when I had my own on the field and hitting for 13.

I recommend this deck highly. I'm still slightly considering the splash for white or black, but I really love how powerful the mana base is. I've also considered Nykthos but I don't want to get a two land hand with Nykthos and Eidolon. If we go white, we have Hushwing Griff and Deflecting Palm, two cards that can help fight against the Rhino. At least you can deflect the 4 on the swing and then the following turn fated conflagration it. Black has Thoughtseize, which can simply strip the Rhino. Black also has bloodstained mire which is tempting.
