FIRST PLACE!!!!! BOOYAH!!! —April 28, 2013

Hit #1 deck on the site as of 04-27-13! And to think this whole decks started as a goof-off, throw together just for the halibut deck. :D Thanks to everyone out there who viewed, commented, and upvoted! :D

i see what you're going for RedZebraTape but this deck doesn't really have use for it's ability. Obviously it's not my choice, but that's just my opinion

Have you considered Walking Archive instead of Howling Mine ? Maybe as well as? It synergises with the defender ramp better, and can be fueled by the Axebane Guardian s to mill/draw even faster. I know that slightly ruins the monogreen aesthetic, but you still wouldn't be playing any non-green cards, just a non-green ability, so... Maybe? Also worth being aware that it may eat removal a little more easily than the Howling Mine, but is definitely worth considering.

I think it's funny how even when I'm not here, other people are explaining the "why not"s for me! :P Good discussion though everybody, really.

@bubbles: I had no idea that a card such as Walking Archive existed. You are absolutely correct, he fulfills the same role as Howling Mine , but possibly better since I can up the draw count. AND he has defender, because someone somewhere at Wizards thought to themselves: "someone somewhere will be genius enough to make a defender-ramp mill deck, and this shall be my gift unto them!" XD Thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely playtest it a bit and see if it makes a big enough difference to warrant the swap!

@yeoman67 and RedZebraTape: Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger is cool, and I typically have at least 8 available mana turn 4, but he kinda defeats the purpose of the deck. Sideboard potential maybe, for against heavier control decks, but otherwise I'm going to have to pass on the big lug this time.

So, here's an idea:

Sideboard your three Decimator Web s for help with graveyard recursion effects like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and mainboard the Keening Stone s.

Here's why: both cards are likely to come into play on the same turn and will likely mill for the same amount (however, you'll probably use the web a turn earlier and possibly the same turn it entered the battlefield). However, web only mills for six per turn whereas, Keening Stone will likely mill for 6 (or more depending on what your opponent plays) the turn after it enters play and then at least 12 the next turn at which points it meets or passes web's mill and then, the next turn, stone completely blows web out of the water.

So, after 3 turns with web on the field, you've milled probably 30 cards or so with 2-3 turns remaining to mill them out with sands and web. I think you could get it 1-2 turns faster with sands and stone. And, as we all know, 1-2 turns could make the difference between a win and a loss.

P.S. I really love Keening Stone . I started playing during Worldwake, but my first set release was Rise of the Eldrazi and my very first "competitive deck" had Keening Stone in it

Didn't need the "PS" there - if I didn't catch on that you LOVE Keening Stone by now, then I'd be pretty freaking oblivious. :P

I'm just not that big a fan of it. Plus, I already own the 3x Decimator Web s, and part of the point of a budget deck is not spending a whole lot of money on cards. And yes, I know it's only like $1.50 right now, but to me it's $3 I don't have to spend, on a card I'm just not that interested in. Sorry Heartpiercer, but Decimator Web s stay. :)

Why don't you post a copy of your deck with the Keening Stone , and show me how much better it is?

I said why not Otherworld Atlas ???

Xindlepete says... #12

Thanks for reposting, and sorry about the snaffu earlier. Otherworld Atlas is a four cmc slot, and has to tap to add counters to it. So for twice the mana cost of Howling Mine , it has basically the exact same effect but it doesn't work until a turn after you play it. Or it would take about 6 turns of building up counters on the Otherworld Atlas to make up for the difference in draw I would've had from the Howling Mine . It's just that the mine works a lot faster, and I can get it into play sooner. Though as I stated in the updates, I'll be swapping the mines for Walking Archive when I get some of them, since I can pump up the counters on them, as well as being defender creatures that will help with the ramp up.

Again I'm going to have to shut it down. As a card in general, sure I can see where Tree of Redemption can be useful - however, that isn't here. Since this deck doesn't have any lifegain effects, there isn't really any way to get a strong enough use out of the tree to give it a 4 cmc drop slot. Traproot Kami will usually get to about 0/8 by turn 6 with the playing extra land from Rites of Flourishing and putting land on the battlefield with Cultivate , and 0/8 reach for a ONE cmc slot is plenty strong enough to shut down more aggro decks. And considering the majority of the tapping my walls for mana occurs during the opponent's turn, Overgrown Battlement is a 0/4 for 2 cmc. That's strong enough to block out a lot of early aggro creatures. I just don't see Tree of Redemption doing enough for me to warrant putting in here. Sorry.

Sorry about that. I wasn't meaning to target you in my explanation for Tree of Redemption . I've had to purge the comments on this deck 3 or 4 times now! It's surprising how fast they can build up. You were actually like the 3rd person to try to recommend it to me. And don't get me wrong, I do like the Tree of Redemption , I saw a particular G/W lifegain build that involved a full set of trees and a constant rotation of life total. I wish I could remember the whole build, it was actually rather interesting. It's just that for this deck I would much rather be investing 4 mana in either playing or activating a Decimator Web . And comparing any other 4 cmc to that, it is pretty difficult to make the cut. :)

As for Worldspine Wurm he is pretty beast, and getting a bunch of tokens out of him even if he does get removed is worth looking into perhaps. But I personally prefer the Elderscale Wurm , ESPECIALLY for this deck. Worldspine Wurm can be a nuisance and may need removal, but Elderscale Wurm says "you can't win until I get removed; AND until then I'm trample all over yo face!" XD And he is significantly easier to play, considering Worldspine Wurm is 1.5x the CMC. I'll tell you what though, he certainly puts the "fat" in "fatty"! XD

what you do is take the part of the web address that has your deck name and bracket it like you would a card

ExpectDragons says... #19

voltaic key may be one to consider working well with the decimator web, wall of tanglecord makes for a good artifact defender at 2 mana with one forest to give it reach, Asceticism i think is one you need to sideboard in as the orb protect you not your permanents. Another good sideboard card is eyes of wisent, when a blue spell is cast during your turn you get a 4/4 elemental, also tormod's crypt might be one to consider for the sideboard against decks that target their graveyard and elixir of immortality should they be playing it. Buried Ruin might also be a land you could look at, being able to return an artifact to your hand from your graveyard once sacrificed, Gemstone caverns could give you a bit of acceleration as well so could be a land to consider.
