Mono-Blue Thassa Aggro (1v1)

Commander / EDH*

KyleKatarn7

If you want a weird deck that strangely works, this is it. It started as a thought experiment and has slowly transformed into... whatever this is.

I tend to call it "Mono-blue Thassa prison aggro" because the main goal of this deck is to hit 5 blue devotion as soon as possible and start swinging in. Most of EDHREC has Thassa built as a meme deck going for sea monsters, when the real monster is Thassa herself.

Generally speaking, you're hitting Thassa turn 3 and swinging turn 4 with an indestructible 5/5 that scrys every turn and can give itself evasion. The scry is the only reason this deck can go down to 32/33 land comfortably as you're generally going through more of your deck than the opponent. Dead land draw becomes threats. Threats become lands when needed. I can't overstate how much the scry smooths everything out.

Disruptive, incremental advantage is the name of the game. It has disruption pieces for almost any game-plan the opponent has. At times it feels like a Stax deck that inherently breaks parity - the vast majority of the permanents we go for are difficult to remove, disrupt the enemy game plan, AND tend to come with an inherent two for one against our opponents - enchanting THEIR lands, creatures, or artifacts to avoid the usual enchantment issues.

Of course, we have some cards that feel downright mean to play. Parallax Tide seals games, but combo that with Vedalken Mastermind and you almost want to apologize. Same with Shimmer. I've had games decided by a Sea's Claim. Back to Basics is (was) an all-star (Not currently included due to possible MTGO 1v1 banning).

It feels strange to have a deck where Encrust is a great card. Where Jace, the Mind Sculptor feels too expensive. Where I agonized over whether to include Cyclonic Rift because games tended to be decided before hitting 7 mana. Where Sol Ring wasn't an auto-include.

There's still plenty of room to adjust the deck (especially since card price -was- taken into account for this build, so it tends to be budget-oriented), but the near-constant criteria for cards is CMC. Lower is better, more blue is better, permanents are better. That leads to some seemingly awkward picks, but there have been times where I've been happy to cast Harbinger of the Tides or Tidebinder Mage without targets, and when they do have targets it's just gravy.

Some non-budget options:Invoke Prejudice Land Equilibrium Vendilion Clique Treachery Kira, Great Glass-Spinner

One area that I'll admit forthright I've slacked on - Lands. I picked a couple that felt like auto-includes, but if anybody has any suggestions for others I'd appreciate it!

11/4/17 Update:

Rather large update reflecting local meta changes:

Trickbind + Stifle: Because nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. Squashes painful Planeswalker activations (Ugin, Karn), stops some infinites in their tracks, and has the potential for 1 or 2 mana land destruction off of fetches.

Null Rod: Shuts down so much. Very, very rarely a dead draw.

Wasteland + Maze of Ith: Handy utility lands

Boomerang: Huge gain of tempo and combos with some of the other pieces (Parallax Tide for example)

Venser, Shaper Savant: Tempo gain or soft counterspell

Somnophore: Can simply shut down Battlecruiser commander decks

Mindlock Orb: Blue's version of the Aven Mindcensor, adds to the stax/prison component

One With the Wind: Another copy of Spectral Flight, an all star.

Essence Flare: Swapped out because it's objectively better for this deck than Unstable Mutation

Jace's Archivist: Flex slot

A lot of the previous description is still accurate, though there's more of a "Prison" component to this deck. I've played around with some of the previous high-cost recommendations, and Kira, Great Glass-Spinner is a nonbo. Nobody wants to pay 4 for Thassa unblockable. Land Equilibrium only really affects Battlecruiser magic, so more of a meta call.
