Mono Black Sidisi cEDH (Gotta go fast)

Commander / EDH* Mono-Black

earthbound2eric

the aim of this deck is pretty simple. ramp out sidisi, cast ad naus, win. you win by drawing all (or most) of your deck, getting skirge familiar on to the battlefield, then discarding your whole deck for a massive exsanguinate.

the deck has very few tools in terms of interaction, mostly because you dont want the games to go long enough that you have to interact, but it does include a few one and two mana answers.

the key to playing and building this deck is to remember that just because something fits in the deck, doesnt always mean we are going to play simply because of the mana constraints.

we rely far more heavily on ad naus than most other decks do as it is our main wincon. our wincon is much more easily interacted with than others because of how many spells that it sometimes takes to go off.

Notes:

  • it is almost always best to cast ad naus on your opponents end step. HOWEVER this is sometimes hard to do if your opponents are playing blue, and that means letting them untap one more time. going off turn 3/4 is crucial in this deck because we have so few ways of protecting or combo. going off before our opponents set up is important.

  • if you can entomb skirge familiar before casting ad naus, this helps greatly because that is five less damage you have to take from ad naus.

  • i have chosen to omit aetherflux reservoir combo from this version of the deck in the interest of keeping things budget. without more of the free mana (LED, mana crypt, mox diamond) going off with reservoir is much more difficult. plus this takes out 4 potential damage off of ad naus.

  • DO NOT LET YOUR LIFE TOTAL FALL. going off with ad naus becomes pretty much impossible once you have less than 30 life. use the cheap removal that this deck is packed with to pad your life total as much as possible.

  • this deck (especially the budget version) is very glasscanonny. you will sometimes have to mull several times before you can keep a useable hand, and casting ad naus is an all or nothing situation, you are either winning or dying right there.

Execution:

  • winning with this deck is actually pretty easy. you want to keep a hand with as much ramp as possible (even if it is only single use ramp) to be able to turbo out sidisi as early as possible. One on the battlefield, it is almost always right to sac sidisi to her own ability so that she can be reanimated later if need be. theres typically only two things you wanna grab with her: Ad naus, or lake of the dead. grabbing ad naus means you feel like you have enough resources to go off the following turn, grabbing lake of the dead is an acknowledgement of a lack of mana and waiting an extra turn.

  • after you cast ad naus, you want to try and ramp up again to see if you can cast skirge familiar. this is why i say it is easier to entomb skirge familiar before casting ad naus, becuase then it only costs one/two mana to reanimate as opposed to 5 mana to cast.

  • if you did not find skirge familiar, you have to tutor for it either by casting demonic tutor or by reanimating sidisi.

assess your hand:

  • shadow of the grave is a great way to double your mana because it lets you discord your deck twice

  • doubling cube is the same with the added benefit that you can untap it if you need to with voltaic key

  • yawmoth's will is cool because it lets you play all your single use mana excellerant twice (cabal ritual, dark ritual, lotus pedal, culling the weak)

  • imp's mischief is the only way we have of protecting our combo from counter magic.

decide between which cards you would like to keep and then discard the rest. then repeat this process as many times as you can with shadow of the grave (and then using yawg will to recast shadow of the grave). save doubling cube for the absolute last step as you want to have the most mana as possible before doubling it. then use up all but two of your mana (holding up imp's mishchief) on the biggest exsanguinate you will probably ever cast in your life, and pray to Erebos that it resolves.
