Tooth and Nail —July 10, 2014

I've had people (enough to warrant a post) ask me in the past why I played Genesis Wave and/or Chord of Calling when I could just play Tooth and Nail and for 9-mana could grab two Craterhoof Behemoth's or a Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and a Flame-Kin Zealot (or any other 2-card combo out there...)

First off, this is a personal choice. Tooth and Nail is an amazing card that when/if it resolves ends the game 95% of the time...my preference comes from the playability of Genesis Wave and Chord of Calling...What I mean is:

  1. While there are some decks that will allow us to simply ramp up to 9-mana by turn three where Tooth and Nail would probably be better; we're going to win those games anyways :)

  2. I can't count on two hands the amount of times I've "chorded" for an Arbor Elf to use the next turn to untap a Forest with 2 Utopia Sprawls on it, how many times I've "waved" for 4 and hit a land, an Abundant Growth, an Elvish Visionary and a Garruk Wildspeaker, etc.

  3. Chord of Calling also allows us to use our creatures as mana (via convoke),

  4. While a Genesis Wave for 4 is already the first half of Tooth and Nail, I'd rather 2-4 permanents (depending on their costs) hit the board THAT TURN than tutoring for 2 creatures I MAY be able to play the next turn....and if I'm "waving" for 4; I'm most likely behind and getting instant permanents is more beneficial than cards I have to cast next turn...

  5. "Mana Sinks" are the key to ramp/devotion decks. You don't want to be stuck with cards in your hand. While a Genesis Wave with X=15 is going to win the game; a Genesis Wave with X=5 will most likely lead to you winning the next turn. Having the option to do either is what makes the chard powerful.

Simply put, the Modern meta requires decks to be malleable. Playing against Control is nothing like playing against Affinity; and a sideboard alone can't always make up for this. Having powerful cards that are also versatile is the key to winning throughout a meta with a ramp deck (in my opinion)....

Having said all of this, I'm always open to discussion. I'm always learning; and could be missing something. As always, let us know what you think!

That's awesome RedZebra!!! Its a fun deck to goldfish :). Yeah, if two early Arbor Elf 's get out there and aren't dealt with immediately; it can out of hand somewhat quickly...thanks for sharing that!

The Nissa seems like a good add with only 5 lands that don't untap off her (3 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and 2 Cavern of Souls . If you ramp to 6 you can also use her land animation ability on an old forest and crash in with a 4/4 hasty dude.

I feel like 4 Elvish Archdruid is required. Why only 3?

Nissa, Worldwaker has been amazing in the deck. in 90% of the games she comes into play, she is completely "free" (i.e. one Forest has a Utopia Sprawl on it, so she untaps all of the mana she costs)...

You are right Spazik008...I do love Elvish Archdruid . I probably should add the fourth back in. I wanted to keep the deck at 60; so I had to cut one card. I may be better off cutting one Elvish Visionary or maybe even a Genesis Wave ...what do you think would be the best option to cut?

While this is a fast and strong deck, I really believe that it would struggle against faster decks likes this one -> Big creatures. What do you think?

Good news for all those wanting to play this deck...Chord of Calling has been reprinted in M15!

Made two small changes...switched out one Forest for a Stomping Ground and switched out Overgrowth for Trace of Abundance .

The Stomping Ground was simply to give myself a little more access to red mana. Not as important in game one; but with a few red sideboard cards as well as the addition of Trace of Abundance it seemed necessary. Stomping Ground is also a Forest ; so it doesn't hurt our Arbor Elf or Nissa, Worldwaker interactions.

Trace of Abundance was added over Overgrowth as I felt the land protection was more important than the 1-additional mana. There are a lot of Tectonic Edge and Ghost Quarter 's running around right now; so I felt it was viable in the main. I also have one in the board to play against B/G (which runs a full set of tec-edges and Fulminator Mage 's in the board), Hatebearers (which runs both tec-edge and Ghost Quarters, Jund (which run's Fulminator Mage 's in the board) as well as many other decks with either some or dedicated land-destruction lines..It's become far more prevalent in Modern and we want to be able to protect our Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx 's and/or any land we've enchanted heavily (as lands are important to our ramp strategy).

Also, added Defense Grid to the board. It is CRAZY good against the match-ups that are our toughest (control, scapeshift, Delver decks, Splinter Twin, etc.). We play very few instances post-board; and this basically shuts off a quick Splinter Twin combo (as Flash cards are effected as well). Between Defense Grid , Magus of the Moon , and Ruric Thar, the Unbowed we have a really strong post-board game against these decks now!

arthurxisde...I apologize it took a few days to respond!

In terms of how my deck would compete with yours; in all honesty, it would just be a race and generally whichever of us was on the play would probably win 80%+ of the time :)

I don't know if your deck is technically "faster" than mine. It's much more "all in" on the Ramping-Into-a-Fatty" line than mine. The speed of magic decks can really only be quantified by turns. You don't have the ability to deal 20 damage by turn-2; and thus you technically are not "faster"....both decks are lethal by turn 3 at their fastest, and lethal on turn 4 a majority of the time they are not disrupted. The play would be of EXTREME importance in a game of our decks (as both of us would most likely win by turn our turn 4 (person on the draw's turn 3). While you're deck is more streamlined; it gets to it's fatty on the same turn. That being said, you would be one of my tougher match-ups (as I don't have removal either).

Having said the above, you're deck is going to get to the high end with more consistency than mine. Of course, Khalni Hydra and Primalcrux won't instantly end a game like Craterhoof Behemoth does; but Elderscale Wurm certainly would in game one!! Game two there are answers for it; but it is still an awesome ender! I'd really like to get one in my main board (I just can't really find a spot to switch it with).

Our decks are very similar (in that their prime win-con is ramping to a large amount of mana and damage as quickly as possible). The real difference lies in the "tone" or "philosophy" (can't really think of the best word) each deck has. Both are built the way they are most likely entirely based on our different metas.

My deck was built with the current Modern Meta overall (as outlined by MTG Pulse and MTG top 8) in mind. That is what I base all my testing and play on (basically what is top 8-ing in all the dailies and tournaments). The current meta is heavy with URx decks running around (as Spinter Twin and UWR Control, Midrange, and Aggro when combined make up approximately 25% of the Modern Meta). Nearly all of these play multiple Anger of the Gods on top of their removal/counter magic. Rock is quickly growing as well and it plays a TON of removal (both land and creature)...as does Hatebearers (four Path to Exile . Ghost Quarter , etc.)....Scapeshift is nothing but removal and counters outside of it's ramp package, and G/R tron plays Pyroclasm , while UW Tron play tons of counters and bounce spells....given this; approximately 60%+ of the Modern meta plays a very strong enough set of either removal, counter magic, or both (with a strong amount of land destruction fit in) for the meta to be considered "highly disruptive"...

POD, Merfolk, Storm, Boggles, Infect, Affinity, and a few other combo decks don't really play much disruption; but as you probably already know; decks like our destroy these decks :) Fortunately, we don't need to devote too much "hate" to those (as our main board is crazy good against them).

Based on the fact that a majority of the decks in the meta play heavy disruption; I was kind of forced to build in a strong amount of card draw and a few different "lines" (planeswalkers, straight beatdown, Ezuri, etc.) outside of straight ramp to win a game through a heavy amount of removal and/or counters. In my first build; if the opponent was able to remove/destroy my mana dorks and/or enchanted lands and/or Path to Exile the fatty if I got him in; I was out of cards, had no way to draw more, and had no way to fight back....This is where cards like Coiling Oracle , Elvish Visionary , and Abundant Growth come into play. They let you kind of "2 for 1" as they replace themselves and add devotion at the same time :) Also, the varying win-cons (Ezuri, Walker's creating creatures to beat down, etc.) allow us to win in control match-ups and/or match-ups that devote all their removal to creatures.

Your meta is probably much more combo-oriented and/or Aggro-based and thus your deck would be superior in those match-ups. You probably just literally roll right through them!!!

Needless to say, your deck is AWESOME! It is a ramp deck to the extreme! And I really like the 4-of Summoning Trap 's too (as a control deck is gonna be in for a real surprise when you drop one of your 13 fatties! It has inspired me to build with Summoning Trap ....both in this deck and in another I am brewing now...such a great card! Great deck btw...if you are a Green Mage, you should check out Big Creatures...it is a green mage's heaven!

I really love this deck me and a friend are hoping to make a deck that is very similar or exactly the same our main difference is that we run 4 Fireball cause ya know burning the face or smashing the face it's still a win

July 6, 2014 2:04 a.m.

tiassa...that's an awesome idea! You may wanna try Banefire too because control opponents can't counter it; but that would be a great addition to the deck and would work quite well! Good idea!

Helix Pinnacle and Primal Crux need to be in this deck

July 9, 2014 11:47 a.m.

jessebow2000, I absoutely LOVE Primalcrux ! It is a card I instantly started utilizing when I began brewing green devotion (with the release of Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx )...it is a card that is actually a centerpiece in one of the devotion decks I have built. It and Khalni Hydra can break games wide open if you have any form of mana sink...and Primalcrux can win all on its own. I have tried out Primalcrux in this build (albeit not long enough to assume I had tested enough to ensure it shouldn't be in the deck) and found that typically I had wished I played a Primeval Titan instead :)

The tough part about ramping in Modern is the extremely efficient removal spells...particularly Path to Exile ....it is REALLY tough to use your mana to cast a 10/10 Primalcrux only to have it exiled for 1 mana! With Primeval Titan , even if he is removed the second he resolves; you still get your two lands (and a majority of the time one of the lands is a Kessig Wolf Run . It is a definite trade-off thought (as Primalcrux is often much larger than Primeval Titan ; but Primeval Titan is simply a more powerful card on it's own....Also, Chord of Calling is slightly harder for a Primalcrux only because it has to be 9 Green mana (as opposed to 5 green and 4 colorless for Primeval Titan ). This isn't the end of the world (as a majority of your mana and creatures are green); but it is something that can keep you from Chord of Calling for a Primalcrux if you have Cavern of Souls and/or Kessig Wolf Run in play. The trade-off, however, is that if you Chord on the opponents end of turn for a Primalcrux ; often time you can have a 12/12 + "haste" creature with trample on your turn! So many things to take into account!!!

Having said this, I do need to try out Primalcrux some more to ensure there shouldn't be at a minimum one of them in this deck. It will be VERY difficult to take out even one Primeval Titan as it most likely is the most powerful green 6-drop in Modern (it definitely is in the top 3)...there is a reason it is banned in several formats :)....but Primalcrux is a green-devotion deck creature for sure. "Chroma" was the precursor to Devotion; so he was literally made for such a deck :) Great suggestion and something definitely worth trying out.

I like Helix Pinnacle as well; but I prefer it more for "infinite combo" decks. It is a great win-con for decks that generate infinite mana. I have used it in two different decks (both my defender green deck which I will put on Tapped Out sometime next week as well as well as my Bloom Tender deck)...I don't absolutely love it in a non-infinite deck; however, as it seems to take too long...it would be fun to brew some form of Simic control/ramp deck that uses it though...that is a deck we have to make!

Great suggestions! I will try out Primalcrux today. Thank you! And thank you for the +1!

July 9, 2014 5:19 p.m.

Changed the "Gold Fish" to represent only one Craterhoof Behemoth and three Primeval Titan ....while it drops the total damage on turn three from 121 to 99...99 most of the time will still be lethal on turn three :) Having access to three Primeval Titan just makes the deck far more powerful when playing the entirety of the meta.

I will update the sideboard comments this evening as well (as it is changed during my testing period). As always; please let me know what you think or of anything you think could improve the deck! Thanks in advance for everyone's help and positive comments on this deck! Someday we green mages will get a greed devotion deck to become a contender in the Meta!
