A Maori legend about a giant, man-eating bird has been confirmed by scientists. Te Hokioi was a huge black-and-white predator with a red crest and yellow-green tinged wingtips, in an account given to Sir George Gray, an early governor of New Zealand. It was said to be named after its cry and to have "raced the hawk to the heavens". Scientists now think the stories handed down by word of mouth and depicted in rock drawings refer to Haast's eagle, a raptor that became extinct just 500 years ago, shows their study in The Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

DECK DESIGN: Planting the Seeds

My wife got her first taste of competitive magic during the Return to Ravnica Pre-Release Tournament, She enjoyed it a lot. She chose Selesnya as her guild, and enjoyed the mechanic enough she wanted to build a populate deck. This deck has gone through numerous revisions, and deserved at least one more revamp before it rotated out of standard.

SYNERGY: Power in Numbers

The Selesnya mechanic "Populate" is a key factor in the deck's strength. Advent of the Wurm & Armada Wurm are pretty powerful drops, and populate keeps the wurms replenishing. Grove of the Guardian gives another nice populate target. Trostani, Selesnya's Voice pushes our life total up while aiding us in keeping the wurm stables well stocked. Her cousin Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage can also help this cause when needed. Early game Call of the Conclave is a handy way to hold back opponents.

Due to the high casting cost of some of the decks signature cards, Arbor Elf & Avacyn's Pilgrim are essential in helping maintain momentum.

A card I definitely feel is begging to be broken is Bronzebeak Moa. The more we can populate, the bigger and more dangerous he becomes, although only temporary. Unflinching Courage makes him a force to be reckoned with! Now, imagine playing Captain's Call, Midnight Haunting, or Increasing Devotion before attacking with your Bronzebeak Moa. Fun right? Add Parallel Lives to the equation. FUN x2!

Emmara Tandris does a fine job boosting our defenses, since the smaller tokens are pretty fragile. Collective Blessing can make even our tiny soldiers formidable attackers. Growing Ranks helps keep our populate targets populating, and keeps the Bronzebeak Moa a healthy 5/5 or better. Wayfaring Temple also benefits from our weaker tokens, while helping keep the deck populating. Selesnya Charm is a great combo of removal, pump, or token generation & Garruk, Primal Hunter combo's well with our decks win conditions nicely.

SIDEBOARD:

It’s there, although it’s untested and more or less for fun.

BUDGET:

I build every deck under a $100 budget, to be affordable for most casual players. While this removes many of the higher priced and sought after cards from my potential pool, it also forces me to be creative and look into a wider scope of cards. Occasionally I have a deck that exceeds this amount, either due to price inflation over time, or getting a few lucky pulls in packs that I opted to keep, and in those rare cases, I will attempt to annotate replacement options that would bring the deck back in line with this budget.
