Mizzix is a tricksy little sod, and the amount of mana available is going to be deceptive. I anticipate spending too much time counting my mana, looking at my hand, counting my mana, looking at my hand...

We started with the Commander 2015 UR deck "Seize Control", but many modifications have been made. Very little of the deck remains. What has been added, however, is a rockin' spell-slinger style EDH deck.

  1. Added: Proliferate cards, to help Mizzix rack up the experience counters

  2. Added: Buyback spells, to take advantage of those experience counters

  3. Added: Lots of x-costed spells, both in the burn section and the counter spell section, with some pulling double duty

  4. Added: Equipment and artifacts to protect Mizzix and help the deck to function

  5. Removed: Most of the creatures and non-artifact, non-land permanents

The card draw engine is the most important engine in the deck, I think. Mizzix needs fuel for her machine, and if you are drawing cards, you are going to be drawing your answers, your counterspells, your burn, your win conditions. We are trying to reach a critical mass of Ancestral Recall variants in the deck.

The deck runs at least one infinite combo win condition: Firemind's Foresight tutoring up Reiterate + Reality Spasm + Whispers of the Muse (or another 1 drop). Reiterate and Reality Spasm create infinite mana, which can be used to draw your library for all your burn spells and other answers to win the game. There is also a tutor for the tutor, although the deck does not depend on the combo for winning. Its just nice to have.

Buyback is very important for getting and keeping card advantage. Mizzix's cost reduction ability means these spells become much cheaper, and therefore much more powerful.

The proliferate package runs every non-artifact proliferate card in Mizzix's colors. Mizzix is fairly fragile, and against a board of determined opponents she may be taken down before she can accumulate too many experience counters. The command tax can become prohibitive, but with spells that proliferate, you can continue to accrue value until Mizzix returns.

The deck runs a full complement of control spells, from counterspells, to boardwipes, to spot removal. These spells are selected to work with Mizzix's ability, and, where possible, to leave Mizzix standing at the resolution of the board wipe.

Finally, there are five artifacts in the deck which I consider to be Mizzix's special tools. Firstly, her trusty steed, the Psychosis Crawler, the only other creature in the deck. The crawler works well with the card draw engine and is often just a big blocker to protect you from bad beats. Secondly, the Sphinx-Bone Wand, a wincon in its own right. If this gets any number of counters on it, it can be devastating to your opponents' life totals. (It also works well with the proliferate package). Venser's Journal is the third tool in Mizzix's saddlebags. Another source of discard protection, the lifegain is not to be ignored, especially since Mizzix doesnt do blocking. Finally, two pair of boots, in Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves, ways to protect Mizzix from pesky removal.

While there are still tweaks to consider this is a deck which is a lot of fun to play!

Updates Add

It was immediately obvious that Mizzix NEEDED both Fierce Guardianship and Deflecting Swat as soon as they were spoiled. Mizzix is most in danger the turn she is played. It is too easy to kill her and set back the deck's strategy significantly. The existence of Free Spells means that she might survive the initial turn she is cast, and even in those cases where the enemy has two or more removal spells, being able to gain even a single Experience Counter means that the deck can at least proliferate.

The deck was getting kind of creature heavy of late, so I went back to Mizzix's roots, and cut two of them. God-Eternal Kefnet and Spark Double are out in favor of Swat and Force-of-Don't-Touch-My-Commander.

I need to buy an actual Force of Will because Force of Negation is terribly disappointing.

I am also trying out Arcane Signet over Coldsteel Heart. Coming in untapped is probably good.
