Added more land —Oct. 30, 2012

As much as I liked the idea of the Undead Alchemist I decided to sideboard it to make room for more land. Still thinking of splashing in some black or green to boost my creature base. I also think I may swap out the Chronic Flooding for some dispels. Thoughts?

I get the impression that the deck is a bit aimless. You aren't running multiples of the best mill cards you have and instead that board space is devoted to a plethora of counterspells.

Counterspells are meant to be a support card. You won't be able to counter everything that gets played, and eventually something will resolve and mess you up because you don't really have any other lines of defense besides the now-useless counters.

Drop some of the counterspells and average creatures and run more mill-oriented cards. A 3 or 4 Jace, Memory Adept would be great if you can get that many (I see that this is currently a low-budget deck).

card:Jace's Archivist and card:Jace's Erasure are great mill cards when used in conjunction.

Use more Ponder /Index to help you set up to answer board states.

More Fog Bank . Nothing stalls people out more than a fog bank (unless they have trample)

Wind Drake just plain sucks, it's too vanilla and it doesn't help towards your win con.

You need more answers to creatures that resolve or you're going to be sucking v.s. aggro. Unsummon , Vapor Snag , kill spells if you splash black, and Essence Scatter all are helpful v.s. creatures.

I love taking new decks to fnm, I'm doing it with my new b/w tomorrow.I can't tell if you're trying to mill or control, but I think you're trying to mill so you need more stall stuff. Mainboard the hatchlings, more fog banks, vapor snag and unsummon help SO much when messing up an aggro deck's tempo. Also, late game, dreadwaters is usually a finisher in mill. Good luck.

Forget Dreadwaters and go with Sands of Delirium instead. It's almost a recurring Dreadwaters except if you want to mill = to your lands you have to tap all those lands instead of just the 4 that Dreadwaters costs.

Thanks alot guys, I decided to go with less mill for more control (especially over the cards im drawing) and creatures. Yeah the only reason I put the Wind Drake s in is because they were a fairly low cost flyer, but if i can get a hold of two more Fog Bank s the drakes are out. I think Dreadwaters is a better choice than Sands of Delirium as it after turn 4 I would still have mana open for other actions as well as the mill. I do like Unsummon but what should come out, the Shriekgeist s maybe?

Yes but the advantage of the Sands of Delirium is that you can use it during your opponents end phase with any untapped land you have. The Dreadwaters is a sorcery so it has to be cast during your turn and if you draw it early like turn 7 or something it's not very effective where as the Sands is useful whenever. Also the waters are only useful for the one time you cast it, the Sands continue to be a problem that they most likely will have to deal with someway.

very true, i never thought about using on their endstep, that would be really nice. Im really thinking about throwing in some Talrand, Sky Summoner s. I played tonight at FNM and found that unless I get at least one preferably two card:Jace's Phantasm I dont have much in the way of damage, the free 2/2 drakes would be nice, especially with the amount of instant and sorcery cards I play.

instead of Divination try Thought Scour , it has mill power and allows you to draw. i'm making a very similar deck, and believe me you need Unsummon s or Vapor Snag s for some more control, In mine i also put in Devastation Tide just in case.

Silent Departure is a good post-rotation replacement for Vapor Snag s as it has flashback even though the flashback cost is a little high at 5 mana. Stern Mentor is also handy in mill decks. It's kinda like 2 Vedalken Entrancer s in one without the mana cost for activation. And Void Stalker could also be better than an unsummon because you know that most likely it won't be back next turn.

Here is my take on a deck:post-rotation-mill deck.

The deck would run more consistently if you up the land count to 24-25.

it seems the best card to take out to add 4 more land would be Chronic Flooding agreed?

that and Cackling Counterpart doesn't really have decent targets, it might be fine as a one of, but unless you get lucky with a clone it isn't good enough as a copier of your other creatures (though I do get the idea behind them) and will require you to be in a winning position for them to be good.

On another note about your comment about the Dreadwaters and sands I would have to stand more towards the artifact since you can use it's ability at instant speed, meaning you can hold up for counterspells and if you don't use them you can simply mill your opponent at the end step. Also I would suggest using the update section and use the hide old comments check box to clear up those ancient comments.
