This is an alternate version of my original Mermalade deck that focuses more on counter growth. Enjoy.

This deck is a little more advanced to play than the Mermalade original. Here's a good breakdown to help guide you through the win condition.

The primary win condition is counter growth. The key cards are River Sneak, Deeproot Waters, Metallic Mimic, Shapers of Nature, and Growing Rites of Itlimoc.

River Sneak is the MVP of the deck. For 2 mana you get access to an unblockable creature that gets a buff when other Merfolk enter the battle field. This is where Deeproot Waters comes in very handy because it produces Merfolk when you play a Merfolk. I'll elaborate more on how good this is later on.

Metallic Mimic and Durable Handicraft give your Merfolk creatures entering the battlefield extra counters, so if both of these are out your River Sneak can be a 3/3 creature that's unblockable for 2 mana!

Shapers of Nature and Growing Rites of Itlimoc pair up nicely as the game progresses to the middle rounds. Deeproot Waters produces token Merfolk with hexproof, so there's a good chance you have multiple creatures on the battlefield. When Growing Rites flips, it can be used to activate the ability of Shaper's and distribute counters amongst your creatures for extra firepower!

Shapers' Sanctuary offers card draw in the early game when your creatures are targeted, stacking up extra weapons like Heroic Intervention and Spell Pierce that will help battle removal spells. Blossoming Defense is also interchangeable here.

Kopola, Warden of Waves is a great 3 cost utility card that can help prevent excessive removal spells and abilities that effect your Merfolk.

Nissa, Steward of the Elements does wonders in this deck where it wasn't really a great card in the other Mermalade strategy. Here, because other casting costs are low and Growing Riges can ramp her loyalty counters, she is an amazing toolkit supplied in a nice neat package! Use her to scry, tutor, and win.

With the bulk of this deck between 2 and 3 mana, it's not necessary to run an excessive amount of land. Also, you have access to card draw and tutors (Nissa). If you feel like you need to add lands after playtesting, try adding one more Forest and taking away one Spell Pierce.

The lands are pretty self-explanatory here, just be careful when changing them up because it could slow the deck down. Right now, none of the lands enter tapped (which is important) except Botanical Sanctum if you have 2 or more lands.

The sideboard is loaded with extra counter generators as well as some fun spells like Tishana, Voice of Thunder.

Kefnet's Last Word, this card is sooooo good in Standard right now that I can't believe people aren't using it more. Oh, your opponent played The Scarab God??? Too bad, now it's yours. Mwahaha...

Pull from Tomorrow - added card advantage. Boom.
