Maybeboard

This is my go-to control deck when it comes to EDH. It all started when i set out to build an Esper control deck. at first, i wanted to build a Sharuum deck, but i knew that my inner spike would cause me to make nothing but another combo deck. so i set out to make a brutal control deck that won through attrition, not combo. soon enough however, i found myself squeezing in every major synergistic effect possible and this resulted in a lean, mean (quite simply evil) control deck that cripples everyone and owns the board.one of the first cards i should talk about is Trinket Mage . this little wizard is secretly the backbone of the decks control. Executioner's Capsule, Dispeller's Capsule, Tormod's Crypt , Engineered Explosives, Sensei's Divining Top, Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, and the secret little gem, Expedition Map are all answers that he has access to. this package may seem "cute" at first until you factor in what you can do with Expedition Map . enter this decks recursion engine- Academy Ruins/ Buried Ruin. the very first target for trinket mage is usually the map, the very first target of the map is always academy ruins. what good does that do us? well for one it allows us to recur our artifacts, namely the map to find more land, lands like Thespian's Stage and Dark Depths (20/20 indestructible flying spaghetti monster anyone?) or even Riptide Laboratory to reuse trinket mage and MRB (Merieke Ri Beirt). "Cool so you can reuse your capsule and find land, how nice..." other academy targets include Oblivion Stone (how does destroying everything every other turn soud?) any mana rocks, and Helm of Obedience . oh, and of course, Crucible of Worlds. the center of all this recursion is the academy, so what happens if its destroyed? Buried Ruin and crucible happen. now, since im running crucible i might as well run some other lands that are auto includes; all 9 fetches, Strip Mine and Wasteland. and lets not forget about marit lage- having a flying indestructible space squid is awesome, having a recurrable flying indestructible space squid is even better.i also mentioned Helm of Obedience , an odd choice, i know, but this deck needed atleast one way to auto kill someone- and so i run Leyline of the Void for a nice, simple, space efficient combo that supports what the deck is trying to do.to help find and build this engine i run a wide array of tutors; Vampiric Tutor, Enlightened Tutor, Mystical Tutor, Cruel Tutor and Demonic Tutor . i also run Perplex and Muddle the Mixture. perplex can find o- stone, crucible, MRB, trinket mage and various answers as well as cruel tutor in a pinch. muddle can find Snapcaster Mage (combos with riptide laboratory), Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, Demonic Tutor and Isochron Scepter . its amazing when you transmute muddle to find isochron or demonic and then magically have tutor on a stick. since im talking about the stick lets through in Orim's Chant for that "classic control" feel. orim's can even be used to force spells through or stop an attack.if you mix all of this together, throw in the best draw, counters and removal that esper can offer- you will end up with something like my deck.
