Merfolk Up The Ass

Commander / EDH

LucasV Score: Unrated

Description

Ran across Sygg, River Guide one day at my local card shop and though he sounded interesting... he was only a dollar rare, so I picked him up. Our play group recently decided to start trying to put together as bad-ass stuff as we could think of, and I still had Sygg just waiting around to get made. Therefore, I've begun putting together this Control/Merfolk deck.

Still my first version of the deck... probably needs a little more balancing as far as mana and spells go. Will appreciate any suggestions here - trying to figure out how to get more merfolk faster to really make use of Lullmage Mentor and Wanderwine Prophets .

Oh man, this deck needs Erayo, Soratami Ascendant SO BAD. Also maybe Sigil Tracer ? And Surgespanner ? And Rite of Replication ?

Changeling cards are totally your friend, since they're all creature types at all times. You already have Shapesharer , but I'm particularly fond of Mirror Entity . Clone is a staple creature in all of my blue decks, not only because it's useful for tribal purposes, but because it can copy my opponents' biggest bruisers, and also because it can kill generals.

If you're going to be sacrificing merfolk, and your token production isn't what you want it to be, perhaps card:Marshal's Anthem will be helpful?

Relearn has treated me very well in every deck I've shoved it into. Blue control EDH decks tend to run out of steam in multi-player, and Relearn helps keep the gears of controlly obnoxiousness turning.

A lot of your creatures are wizards. Perhaps Sage of Fables would be a fun addition?

I also love Silvergill Douser . It's one of the pieces of a Merfolk/Faerie/Wizard deck I built a while ago, and whenever it comes out, people need to Deal With It Somehow.

I like Evacuation and Wash Out , especially when going up against anything with tokens, or decks that focus on big, beefy generals that swing for a lot of General damage (Uril decks, for example).

Utility merfolk that may or may not be useful to you and this deck: Stonybrook Banneret and Merrow Harbinger .

Hope my (usual) braindumpy suggestions are useful!

Oh oh oh! Also: Cast Through Time would be super-fun in this deck. I also stole my friend's Lighthouse Chronologist one time, right after he'd leveled it the hell up, and it was Seriously Crazy Fun Times, and it fits with the theme of this deck.

Okay, now there's potential for infinite life, damage, and creatures... combination of Stonybrook Schoolmaster enchanted with Psionic Gift , with Intruder Alarm in play allows for infinite damage and creatures... throw in a Judge of Currents for infinite life, and a Lullmage Mentor for infinite counterspells and insanity abounds.

That is pretty sweet. I fully support ridiculous combos for EDH. It requires a way to hunt for all the pieces, but an Enlightened Tutor , an Idyllic Tutor and Merrow Harbinger should make the job a bit easier....

40 land, trying to make it faster with a little more control - considering cutting down a lot of the Merfolk and subbing in a lot more counterspells.

You could also use Paradise Mantle instead of Psionic Gift - that way, you can hit them for a massive card:Blue Sun's Zenith or something similar to mill them out. It dodges Emrakul, the Aeons Torn -like abilities, and it can get passed instant speed life gain.

I've seen your deck. From my point of view you have lot of cards, it's really hard when you see all the Merfolks! I've made a Merfolk deck myself, it's called deck:merfolks-fairy-tale, maybe you can check it out.

It's basically the same, but i took longer to choose the Merfolks i wanted to use. Most of them are Rare cards, some of them i'm still missing.
