Meren of the Filth!

This Meren deck is more of a focus degenerate Protean Hulk Combo utilizing a variety of ways to get him on the battlefield, sac him and then get your wincons to combo off! It's constructed so that your creatures don't spend too much time in the graveyard due to an abundance of graveyard hate in pretty much in any meta you encounter as it's a vital component to any focused commander deck. So cards such as Rest in Peace , or Relic of Progenitus or Grafdigger's Cage don't present to much of a problem but they are a major threat, so make sure to focus on them when present to not get blown out early on.

The key combos include using Protean Hulk as a sac outlet to get Mikaeus, the Unhallowed plus either Triskelion or Walking Ballista (with a sac outlet) to throw 1/1 counters at your opponents infinitely to win on the spot!

How can we accomplish this you ask?

Well first off the quickest way is through Natural Order to sacrifice a green creature (also works with a green/black creatures as it's colour identity is both colours at once) such as Caustic Caterpillar or Deathrite Shaman with a sac outlet like Ashnod's Altar or Phyrexian Altar to fetch Protean Hulk . Then proceed to kill Protean Hulk with the sac outlet activating its ability fetch from your deck to the battlefield Phyrexian Delver and either Viscera Seer or Carrion Feeder . Use Phyrexian Delver's ability to then return Protean Hulk to the battle and kill it again, this time with Viscera Seer in this instance to summon Mikaeus the Unhallowed and Walking Ballista. This is possible due to Walking Ballista having XX as its mana cost making its CMC equate to 0 so you can fetch both at the same time.

Mikaeus gives Walking Ballista both a 1/1 buff and the undying ability. Sacrifice Walking Ballista with any sac outlet and then proceed to use it's activated ability to throw the 1/1 counter from undying to do one damage to any opponent. This will then reset the undying ability, so when you sac Ballista again it will regain the 1/1 counter when it reenters the battlefield, which can then be thrown at an opponent for 1 damage each time. Repeat infinitely until all opponents are dead.

Other methods are using Protean Hulk to fetch Mikeaus and then using a reanimation spell such as Reanimate or Animate Dead or Meren's ability to reoccur Hulk, proceed to sac it to a sac outlet and this time fetch Triskelion for the infamous Mike+Trike combo. This works similar to the Walking Ballista strategy however Triskelion differs in a significant way as its able to kill itself. This works via the three 1/1 counters Triskelion comes into play with, fling one to an opponent and then use the last one to kill Triskelion. Mikeaus' undying ability will then bring it back with one more counter, which Triskelion can fling one at an opponent and use the last two to kill itself reseting the undying ability and can be done at infinite amount of times.

Other ways are using Buried Alive to put Mikeaus and Trike in the graveyard and then using Victimize to sacrifice a creature to put both on the battlefield and win the game on the spot. This is more mana intensive however, so make sure to have at least 6 mana open as if your opponents see both in the graveyard they may respond accordingly to quickly deal with the threat, so this method is best done when you have both Buried Alive and Victimize to win on the spot.

Other strategies include resource denial which we can accomplish with Awakening Zone + Contamination . This strategy works where you must play Awakening Zone FIRST, where at the BEGINNING of your upkeep (keep this in mind) you get a 0/1 eldrazi scion token,to which you then sacrifice the token to Contamination (played secondly) DURING your upkeep, which ensures every land anyone taps (including you) will only tap for black mana. This should only be done however when you're still able to produce green mana via Golgari Signet or Gilded Lotus or your mana dorks such as Birds of Paradise or Devoted Druid . When used right this strategy locks out your opponents resources.

Another strategy is using Melira, Sylvok Outcast + Woodfall Primus + a Sac Outlet (there's like 9 of them in this deck so pick any!). When Woodfall Primus enters the battlefield it destroys a noncreature permanent which includes either Lands, Artifacts, Enchantments or Planeswalkers. However, he also has persist which is the inverse of undying, meaning he whenever he dies and returns to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter and his first ability then triggers again. This is where we go INFINITE BOIS AND GURLS! Melira's ability removes the ability for creatures to have -1/-1 counters, meaning with a sac outlet Woodfall Primus keeps returning to the battlefield an infinite number of times which allows us clear our opponents entire board state sans their creatures. This can also be achieved by subbing the sac outlet with Mikaeus to give Primus undying but, in reality it's way to mana intensive and you can't Hulk the Primus cause its CMC is 8 mana.

Make sure to target artifacts and enchantments, we have a brevity of cards that can accomplish this with artifacts and enchantment board wipes like Bane of Progress and Pernicious Deed to target removal such as Abrupt Decay , Assassin's Trophy , Maelstrom Pulse (great for tokens!) and Nature's Claim to destroy key artifacts/enchantments. Additionally, use Meren's ability to reoccur all stars like Reclamation Sage and Caustic Caterpillar to keep the spot removal coming!

For creatures we have utility in the cards that target permanents but, also edict effects like Dictate of Erebos , Plaguecrafter and Sheoldred, Whispering One that can keep the opponents board nice and clear of creatures.

Not to mention we have the best sweeper ever printed Toxic Deluge to destroy ALL CREATURES, and each of our creatures destroyed is a separate trigger for an experience counter when Meren is on the field, meaning we can recover our larger finishers like Doom Whisperer , Sheoldred and Lord of Extinction from the graveyard very quickly.

Make sure when using tutors like Demonic Tutor or Vampiric Tutor to get the key cards you need for specific situations or to acquire wincons. Great targets usually include either Mana Crypt for effective ramp which is great early game, Contamination for resource denial, Natural Order to get Hulk or Primus, Protean Hulk itself, or artifact/enchantment hate etc.
Praetor's Grasp and Gonti, Lord of Luxury both have the unique abilities that allows us to steal our opponents cards and then proceed to play them. Praetor's Grasp is more of a one time use that is usually used to allow us to rip a key piece for our opponent's main wincon and send it into exile, so they can no longer play it or maybe allow us to play it and reap the benefits, however we must have lands that produce the correct colour of mana to do so! Gonti's ability is reoccurable thanks to Meren's reanimation but, is limited to only choosing among the top 4 cards of our opponents deck. However, the benefit is that even if Gonti is killed we can still play the card from our opponent's deck we exiled with any colour of mana our lands produce.
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord (the true head of the GOLGARI, Vraska can go look in a mirror!) is another key piece and wincon we have available. Jarad allows us to repeatedly throw Lord of Extinction at all of our opponents at once, as his activated ability allows us to sacrifice the Garbage Lord so all opponents lose life equal to the power of the creature sacrificed. In this case the giant heap of death can be continuously flung thanks to Meren's reanimation ability allowing us to sacrifice Lord of Extinction as many times as needed. This is usually better done late game when all opponents graveyards are filled with used cards powering Lord of Extinction to ridiculous levels. The deck can also be morphed around this ability by playing more cards that fill the graveyard as quickly as possible like Grisly Salvage , Saytr Wayfinder, Hermit Druid or Stitcher's Supplier to have both increase Jarad's and Lord of the Fattest Butts power/toughness but,I deal with too much graveyard hate in my meta for this to be viable for me.
Mindslicer is hand hate of the highest order, essentially when he dies everyone, including you, throws their entire hand in the graveyard. Denying them any viable options and when reoccured continuously with Meren and a sac outlet, will endlessly deny your opponents opportunities to stop you. It can essentially win you games on its own which is why this Deity that goes bump in the night has its own section. Never underestimate the power of destroying your opponents hands!
