Hello and welcome to my toolbox primer take upon Meren of Clan Nel Toth :)

WHY PLAY MEREN?

Meren of Clan Nel Toth is a commander who is based all around recurring something from your graveyard every turn of yours that she is on the field. Who doesn't love getting creatures back to abuse? Some would say go with karador, who I can't deny his extra utility in having white, but I wasn't looking for something that was almost guaranteed to be highly competitive. I was seeking a commander who could hold their own but yet be able to be played silly enough in weaker metas and thrive in either area. Aside of unless one is facing highly tuned combo decks or control decks, Meren offers so much utility it isn't even funny.

Early Game Show

Early in the game you want to focus on ramping your deck as much as possible to be able to afford the fatties later on. This deck doesn't rely much on spells to ramp ahead, instead preferring to abuse creatures which help out with Meren getting more experience counters and you being able to recur better things later on. Things such as a Sakura-Tribe Elder, Solemn Simulacrum, card:Burnished Heart, Yavimaya Elder, or a Wood Elves are all important with being able to sacrifice and recur to thin the deck out bit by bit. We also get help from Oracle of Mul Daya to see the top card and play if it is a land. Don't forget about Liliana of the Dark Realms ability to tutor out swamps as well to your hand which can hopefully then be put out as well.

Mid game Show

By the mid game, you should have enough counters on Meren where if you don't have anything good in your grave yet you can still work on recurring and abusing the land guys from prior. By this point however you wish to be helping youre board state out. THis is where something like an Acidic Slime would be useful since it can get rid of any pesky enchantment, artifact or land your opponent has on their field. A prime target would be card:Sidisi, Undead Vizer as her exploit mechanic allows you to really ramp up Meren by saccing her to herself or getting rid of something else you can bring back to bring forth more utility to hand.

Late Game Show

Towards the latter point in the game we are looking for ways to shut our opponents down and claim a victory for ourselves. Whether you do this through controlling the board state with any combination of a Grave Pact, Dictate of Erebos, or a Butcher of Malakir on the field with any sac engine to help wipe opponents creatures. Sheoldred, Whispering One also helps in getting rid of their dudes and bringing back ours. Toss in a Grave Betrayal and everything they sacrifice creature wise barring tokens and their commander will instead end up on your field empowering your army. A Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger causes alot of hat6e because he makes people cautiously think about how they wish to tap their lands for mana, knowing they will have limited use out of them, but it is useful.

You also have Kozilek, Butcher of Truth whos annihilator will make anyone think about scooping if it hits too many times and you wipe too many permanents. Pathbreaker Ibex is a lesser version of Craterhoof Behemoth but can give you more than enough power to wipe the opposition out with the ensuing pump to your creatures attack power and trample ability.

If worst omes to worst, you can hopefully manage to just wipe your oppositions entire field with a Woodfall Primus and Mikaeus, the Unhallowed combination with a sac engine to destroy everything non creature on their field which isn't indestructible. Sure, you might have their creatures to worry about but barring something like an Elvish Piper and them drawing a forest, you have no reason to be worried about more threats following onto the field.

Results in games with Meren Show

5) Meren vs. Mogis God of Slaughter, Ruhan of the Fomori and Kumano, Master yamabushi. Win via Ruhan taking out the stax mogis player, Kumano scooped due to not getting enough lands through the game and Ruhan scooped when I had him dead to rights with a duplicant on the field, Mikaeus and a sac outlet to exile whatever creature he tried to play against me.

4) Meren versus Meren of Clan Nel Toth, Rhys the Redeemed, and Polukranos: Win via destroying almost all nonland permanents and locking people down with Vorinclex

3) Meren versus Daxos The Returned, Zur The Enchanter, Tasigur The Golden Fang, and Jor Kadeen The Prevailer: Loss due to Tasigur comboing out after Daxos allows him to live one turn too long mercifully.

2) Meren versus Mizzix of the Izmagus, Ezuri Claw of Progress, and Daxos the Returned: Victory via controlling the board where they couldn't play any creatures without me getting them due to grave pact, Grave betrayal and tons of tokens thanks to an Avenger of Zendikar

1) Meren versus Mizzix of the Izmagus, Ezuri Claw of progress, Darien King of Kjeldor, and Kamahl Pit Fighter: Victory via killing Kamahl and the rest scooping due to Vorinclex recursion and no way to exile him.
