Meleki Liki Shocka

Commander / EDH

TheBlueTitan

Introduction

This is my Melek deck. There are many Melek decks, but this one is mine.

Lightning

Melek was my first Izzet Commander. I've since grown attached to the Weird Wizard. I'm not going to try and convince you that Mizzix of the Izmagnus isn't the better choice. Making Melek great is a labor of love. I've been doing my best to optimize him and make him pseudo-competitive (the deck runs both Soothsaying and Timetwister, so there's a solid amount of per-card power differential). To get an idea of what this deck is trying to do flavor-wise, try to imagine that you, as a Planeswalker, were standing off in the distance watching the light show; could the card you suggest be used by Melek as he's fulfilling his Mind's Desire? I want it to look just like this (WARNING HEADPHONE USERS).
Every Deck Has a Name, Right?
The deck name is based off Melek's own name, as well as off of the song, "Mele Kalikimaka", the famous Hawaiian Christmas song. I'm sure you were blessed to have seen the dream scene in Christmas Vacation. If you imagine Chevy Chase's wide-eyed happiness in that scene, that's how I feel when Melek is Storming off in an Izzet Storm Christmasland.

When Victory is just on the tip of your... deck.

There are many ways to create an exorbitant amount of mana in this deck. Combining that with drawing a lot of cards and untaping, this is essentially the most exciting one card win condition printed for Melek in some time.

That being said, there is one combo that wins immediately with Aetherflux Reservoir.

Reiterate + Any Mana producer that generates greater than 6 mana. The arbitrary storm count from the arbitrarily large amount of times Reiterate was cost creates infinite mana here, but more importantly, gains you an arbitrary amount of life, allowing you to fire the Spirit Bomb at your opponent.

Each Relevant Mana Cost Reducer lowers the value by 1!

It's not uncommon for this card to generate 15+ Mana in one turn. Combine this with Melek's ability to cast from the top of the deck, and the card creates enough generic mana for a full turn of chaotic nonsense. Just makes sure you save your Blue Mana. It can run out rather quickly!
This card's utility is a little more nuanced, and has put up mixed results. The times that it has been relevant have been incredible though. Once enough mana has been created, there is no need for more lands, so clearing the deck of excess lands will help Melek find more consistency and gas with his top-of-deck shenanigans.
This is my potentially favorite card in the deck. With enough mana and cycling through the deck, it's possible to blow through 20 spells in a turn and play half of the deck off of this card. Random like Izzet, but also incredibly potent. A classic storm finisher.
Grants access to all the spells in the graveyard. More-go-for-broke than the rest of the spells in the deck though, because once you cast spells enabled by this card, they're gone for good. Powerful, and sometimes can get the necessary tools from the graveyard when your hand and the top of the library aren't playing ball!
It may have escaped your notice, but there are no creatures in this deck. This card is the reason. When Melek is in play, activating this artifact will allow Melek to be buried into the deck, and then he'll eventually be revealed again and nothing happens. That is, except the last line of Proteus Staff states that the cards go back onto the bottom of the library in any order. With Melek in play and just a few mana, you can create the rest of the turn by organizing and literally stacking the deck.
This card doesn't just offer utility. There are many cards in the deck that untap lands or create fast mana. Combine this card with them, and you may very well be able to create an infinite storm count and generate infinite mana. All you need is an engine to draw cards or have access to more than what is in your hand... Past in Flames and Melek, Izzet Paragon understand.
This is just a less powerful, albeit OG version of Aetherflux Reservoir. But redundancy is key in Commander. The fact that it has "Sphinx" in the name is just icing on the cake, their being my favorite creature type and all.
Time Spiral is one of the most powerful mana creators this deck has access to. Everything in Urza's Saga that untapped lands was insane. But combine the ability to untap lands, draw an new hand of 7, and untap 6 lands in a deck that runs High Tide, Turn About, and my Weird friend Melek, Izzet Paragon. If a win isn't certain after drawing a new grip of 7 AND creating 6+ Mana (With a cast off the top of the deck... 12+), then it's probably just bad luck

Note: There are 3 Tutors in this deck that put Time Spiral on top of the deck!

1.) If you have Foil Islands like these! for trade.

2.) Tell me what you think about the deck!

3.) You've tried out the deck yourself, what do you think?
