Took 1st place at Modern-constructed tournament! —Feb. 5, 2015

Went 3-1 overall and still took 1st place, because of tiebreakers and records. First time playing this deck!

Round 1 (against Storm): Burned him out in both games, everything at his face.

Round 2 (against Storm): Repeat above :)

Round 3 (against Genesis Wave):

-Game 1: He took a mulligan down to 5 and I took a mulligan to 6 on the play. I outright burned him before he could ramp up into beatdown.

-Game 2: I was stuck on one land and couldn't do much with what I had in my hand. He also landed an early Kitchen Finks. He beat me down pretty good.

-Game 3: Did what Burn does best :)

Round 4 (against Junk Midrange/Zoo homebrew):

-Game 1: Burned him out quick.

-Game 2: He dropped three Siege Rhino, three turns in a row. I lost.

-Game 3: Played through a Timely Reinforcements sideboard card and still had him down to 3 life. I could NOT draw burn. He was sitting at 3 life for three turns. He beat me and of course my next draw was the burn for the win. Still won :)

I'm not sure if I like Lightning Helix, because lifegain is pretty irrelevant in this deck

i would recomend splashing black (-4 Wooded Foothills +4 Blood Crypt) to add Bump in the Night and throwing some Terminates on the sideboard. also, Leyline of Punishment might come handy against lifegain decks. and Blood Moon is great against tron and patriot control match ups

-1 Arid Mesa +1 Stomping Ground so you can play the Destructive Revelry in the sideboard

Sideboarding in lands is lame, should be maindeck

@Disdained, I was thinking of mainboarding the Stomping Ground myself too. Thank you.

I would surely remove all Wooded Foothills and add 4x Blood Crypt, just as you said Esuriet. Since your running so many fetchlands, i really think you could cut down foothills as i said, but otherwise its quite cool, might want to build it.

I would say that since your curve is so low, I would drop two lands, probably fetches.

Programmer_112 says... #9

If you splash black, you only need one Blood Crypt.

@Esuriet, @gnizz00, and @Programmer_112, at your suggestion, what would you take out for four Bump in the Night?

February 3, 2015 2:07 p.m.

gnizz00 says... #11

Probably Lightning Helix, since the lifegain is mostly irrelevant, but what i would do is to go for 2 Bump in the Night and 2 Lightning Helix. And then obviously run Blood Crypt, and probably swap it out against atleast 2 Wooded Foothills. However this is my opinion, your choice bro! ;)

@gnizz00, I really like Lightning Helix though. It's a double-swing per se and it nets me back any life I lost to fetches and shocks.

you might wanna try Deflecting Palm, most of the time it acts as another copy of helix, making it a good card in the mirror, except it can outright win you the game vs auras, tron and especially ad nauseam.

scholar says... #14

@patrice, would you run Deflecting Palm main in place of something like Lightning Helix or sideboard only?

TerpieTime says... #15

Not sure if Vexing Devil or Ash Zealot is relevant.

February 3, 2015 5:10 p.m.

scholar says... #16

@TerpieTime, Vexing Devil is too inconsistent for this deck and Ash Zealot would perhaps be a decent sideboard card in a very specific meta.

True :) else I really like this deck bruh

I think the deck is cool, but here are the changes I'd make:

-Remove 2 to 4 lands (Since your mana curve is so low)

-Focus on only 2 colors instead of three (More reliable)

-Not sure Eidolon of the Great Revel really helps you since it does damage to you as well

Suggestions for adds: Wear / Tear, Soulfire Grand Master, Deflecting Palm

@John_Styx, I think there's a couple things you overlooked.

I'm not playing three colors, but I was considering also splashing black for Bump in the Night; however, I'm not currently going with that plan. Stomping Ground is in my sideboard for Destructive Revelry, which is exactly what I need against Leyline of Sanctity or any other artifact/enchantment threat, so I don't really need Wear / Tear.

Eidolon of the Great Revel is an automatic four-of and arguably one of the best cards in the deck. Nearly everything that's going to be played in Modern is going to be three mana or less. Sure it hurts me, but I "should" be dealing more damage faster in the long run to not worry about it. Eidolon of the Great Revel simply keeps the pressure on the opponent, while helping me reach my win condition through damage dealt.

I am heavily considering running a couple Soulfire Grand Master main and maybe four Deflecting Palm in the sideboard at the moment.

Thanks for your interest :)

John_Styx says... #20

Alright nice, I understand. I really think Soulfire and Palm would benefit you (Also they are all around cool cards) ;)

I hope you do well with this deck!

February 3, 2015 9:57 p.m.

Soulfire Grand Master (henceforth SGM because mobile :() should not be mainboard. Because of the nature of this deck, the only matchup where it's really sigmificant is the mirror, where it will often get Bolted. Maybe play 1 in the SB, but anything else probably isn't worth it

February 3, 2015 10:09 p.m.

patrice says... #22

Soulfire Grand Master won't do you any good. It dies to most removal, costs 2 mana and doesn't deal damage the turn it enters; for a burn deck to play a card like that, it has to either answer an important matchup or have a powerful effect (Eidolon of the Great Revel)... besides, if you get to the point where you can use your ability, your deck isn't working well.

Deflecting Palm should only be in the sideboard imo, and probably as a miser or 2-of at most, given that despite the incredible blowout potential of the card, there are also matchups where it won't do much
