Mayael the Anima EDH

Commander / EDH

The point behind this deck is to get massive, hard to stop creatures out with Mayael the Anima's ability. The deck can still function without her ability, but it will slow the deck down tremendously.

Some good cards that help protect Mayael the Anima, even though they would typically come out after her, are: Sigarda, Host of Herons, Cavern of Souls, Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Vigor, and the enormous attackers/blockers this deck has to offer.

There are a few cards that pair up really extremely well in this deck, which would be:

a) Mayael the Anima + Seedborn Muse. This creates a very deadly combination, especially in multiplayer games, which this deck is more geared for.

b.) Avacyn, Angel of Hope + Sigarda, Host of Herons. This is mainly against black decks that have a lot of sacrifice (Thraximundar, Ghave, Guru of Spores, Karador, Ghost Chieftan, etc). However, the only way to deal with these two cards out at the same time is with single target exile spells/boardwipes. These two have proven to be deadly when out together.

c.) It That Betrays + any other Eldrazis. This allows you to continuously beat down your opponents via annihilator, while also making yourself more powerful with their artifacts, creatures, enchantments, lands (which help with Mayael the Anima's ability), etc.

This deck has proven to be an extreme threat in any form of multiplayer games. The deck isn't overwhelmingly quick, but people tend to ignore the deck due to early game decks that cause threats.

This deck is also labeled as one of the most powerful decks and is also seen as a concern with others in my playgroup, since there is not as much destruction in the group.

*Note: I know there are cards out there that can make this deck more powerful, like: Iona, Shield of Emeria, Tooth and Nail, etc., but this deck is mainly for fun!

I really like it. I'm in the process of making my Mayael deck and plan to use a lot of these. Ty :)

Have you thought about Wild Pair or Defense of the Heart?

March 18, 2013 6:17 p.m.

Because you have so much artifact ramp, have you ever thought about land destruction like Armageddon ?

Have you thought about adding a Druid of the Anima ? Great for ramp, basically built for Naya colours.

Also, Triumph of Ferocity is a great, low cost enchantment that will help with draw power.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll think about both (the second more than the first, no offense). At the moment, with where I'm going with the deck, it is basically to get cards via Mayael's ability. The deck has had a lot of success and is actually one of the most feared decks in my play group, especially if I am able to get Cream of the Crop and Lurking Predators out.

If I plan on changing Mayael in the future, I'll take those suggestions into consideration. As of right now, though, the creatures are based on 5 power or greater and Seedborn Muse (for specific reasons, haha).

I don't know how your playgroup is but mine plays a lot of counterspells so I play Cavern of Souls for my commander.

just a comment on xNevaRaveNx about Druid of the Anima , you might want to consider the new Sylvan Caryatid for a 2-drop mana dork since it's hexproof and you're probably not going to need to attack with it anyways. and there's always Birds of Paradise as well.

I second chestercottrell, Cavern of Souls is a must.

I would also recommend Xenagos, The Reveler for ramping, and getting that Ult off in correspondence with Mayael would be Ugly.

Have you thought about Hedron Matrix ? any big creature could become horrible for 4 :)

December 10, 2013 3:53 a.m.

Skyshroud Elf is flat-out better than Druid of the Anima . His ability can really help with colour-fixing. That said, I would consider running both, actually.

Mighty Emergence seams like it should be auto include in mayael decks

Seems excellent. However, I think it would be more consistent if you included a few more mana ramps. You'll have a difficult time hard-casting almost all of your creatures if your general gets tucked/killed repeatedly.

mattzim666 says... #13

Do you have any suggestions with what should possibly come out for more ramp spells? I just recently updated the deck and plan on ordering the upgrades fairly soon. I'm not entirely sure what would come out, besides possibly Darksteel Colossus , since the card doesn't bring all too much.

Farseek for duals.Harrow for instant-speed ramp. There's a few others that grab 2 forests for 4.

I'd remove Blasphemous Act maybe. Unless I don't see some kind of combo you're doing with it. Or how about Triumph of the Hordes ? Overwhelming Stampede ? Primal Rage ? Fires of Yavimaya ?

January 19, 2014 4:04 a.m.

mattzim666 says... #16

I could think about removing some of those cards, but I know it would have to take something amazing to be realized for Overwhelming Stampede and Triumph of the Hordes to come out. With the people I typically play against, they can't really deal with some of my cards normally. I'm not calling their decks lackluster by any means, but this deck is really strong. However, if it's an evenly matched game, dealing with creatures becoming double their power or more from Overwhelming Stampede or getting an easy 10 infect with Triumph of the Hordes are just game closers.

Blasphemous Act has been getting closer to the surface of cards I would like to remove. I can see it being good in certain situations but not all. The card works really well with Vigor , even though it would be lost in the process. However, most of the destruction in a Mayael the Anima deck should come from the enormous creatures.

I really like Fires of Yavimaya . Haste is such a powerful mechanic and one I really like, just like I like trample (which I'll get to in a moment). If I have a decent amount of mana, I can hard cast stuff or play Mayael the Anima and use her ability instantly. I also like the sacrificing ability. If someone is trying to remove/destroy Fires of Yavimaya , I can just make a more powerful creature. However, I would definitely remove the card if there's a creature with power 5 or greater that gives all creatures haste. I could also put Urabrask the Hidden in, but I would prefer the potential ease with Mayael the Anima 's ability.

Lastly, Primal Rage is in the deck because most of the time when I'm playing, I could be ridiculously ahead with large creatures, but then my opponents would have like 1/1 blockers, since each of them has at least 1 token deck. So Primal Rage is in hear to deal with chump blockers. If there's another suggestion, because trample is just really powerful against a lot of decks.

Hmm yeah was just looking for last minute ideas for my version of Mayael, And what Rage said Sylvan is banned now (As a general rule of course, if your group allows it go right ahead). My suggestion would be add Archetype of Endurance . just came out and is overpowered as Hell .

I am in the process of building my own Mayael EDH deck. I run an Elvish Piper in my deck in the event that I can't utilize mayael's ability. Also, I noticed you run a hand full of dragons. You might consider running Utvara Hellkite . Another card that I run that I didn't see in your deck is Privileged Position , it helps to protect your permanents. Just some ideas for you. Otherwise, it looks really good!

You should be running Warstorm Surge...If you mayael out a blightsteel, it instant kills someone. Check out my Mayael. I cannot get Eldrazi titans, but I have enough stuff to keep me going. The sideboard is stuff I want or am already getting. You also need Xenegos the god...he is so OP in a Mayael deck.

Yeah, sorry about ignoring comments, I haven't been able to get on in a couple of weeks. I also haven't seen any sets after Thassa, God of the Sea was released.

I'm going to look at all suggestions and comments in a few days and see what I will add/remove. I do plan on removing Sylvan Primordial , even though I am very sad about it. People that I play with want to keep using it, but that will cause complications with potential future bans.

March 4, 2014 6:25 p.m.

mattzim666 says... #22

I originally had a Warstorm Surge in this deck, and I typically got the results you mentioned. However, as I continued using it, the card just made the deck sluggish and unfun with being able to instantly kill someone. I really do love that card, but I like this deck as more interactive damage.

I also REALLY like Archetype of Endurance for the deck. I love creatures, enchantments, artifacts, and possibly other card types that can give Mayael protection.

I'll also look into adding Elvish Piper . I'm kind of at that point with this deck where I'm shifting it from a slow moving powerhouse to a faster-paced juggernaut.

I also like Privileged Position . It reminds me of Asceticism . The only thing holding me back from getting it is the cost of the card itself, since I dislike proxying. I'll try to fit it in the deck.

Also, thoughts on Xenagos, God of Revels ? I think the card can be extremely powerful in this deck. However, one problem I can see is if my devotion isn't 7 or greater, can I get him out with Mayael's ability?

March 10, 2014 12:56 a.m.

ewills5089 says... #23

You should absolutely be running Xenagod. Almost every time I Tooth and Nail, I can bring out both Blightsteel and Xenagod, give it haste and 22 infect power. Xenagod is one of the best cards in the deck in my opinion. I also need a Privileged Position in my deck as well. You should run Warstorm Surge anyway because in my play group, they know to kill it or get rid of it immediately or I could certainly kill them with a Blightsteel, so it uses up enemy removal or board wipes.

I actually removed the hideaway lands recently. I don't doubt they are powerful and have potential, but I just have never had much success with them. The land is usually destroyed before I can use its ability.

Have you ever tried Karametra, God of Harvests ? I have a Mayael deck I run with Eternal Dragon so I just start pumping land out like nobodies business. Gets more fun with Rampaging Baloths . Even without the dragon, 5 mana and you should be in business to get mana enough to play those high cost cards that snuck in under Mayael's ability

If you want more Mayael activations, may I suggest Illusionist's Bracers , Rings of Brighthearth , and Awakening ?

August 17, 2014 9:51 p.m.

mattzim666 says... #34

Thank you for commenting! :)

I've playtested Illusionist's Bracers , and I'm not really fond of it. I replaced it with Rings of Brighthearth (which is already in the deck, but thanks for suggesting it), and I really love Rings of Brighthearth in comparison. Also, I've never really seen Awakening , and I'm really happy you suggested it! Depending on its price, I will add it to the deck.

Thanks again!

August 18, 2014 1:25 a.m.

Tata says... #35

Awakening helps everyone and not just you.

I'd add more rocks if you love Seedborn Muse . Mana Vault , Basalt Monolith , etc. Even without solring there are many great options.

I think your early game is really slow; I play-tested a few hands and wasn't able to do much until about the 4th or 5th turn. I understand you want to run many fat creatures for mayael, but I still think you need a better curve.

I also see you're running guildgates; at the very least why not swap them out for the scry lands?

August 19, 2014 1:11 a.m.

mattzim666 says... #36

Yeah, I unfortunately figured out how Awakening worked, because my brother was confused as to why that card was so inexpensive. It made me really sad, but I still kind of like it; I'm just not sure if it's worth adding to the deck.

Yeah, the deck is kind of sluggish, but that is the kind of meta game I'm playing with in my group. There isn't too much early game action (like the first 5 turns or so, unless Skullbriar, the Walking Grave is being played). Also, Sol Ring is house banned, and I really don't want to use a "loophole" around it. We banned Sol Ring , because 1 player would be in such an advantageous spot over everyone else, which is why I am not including stuff like Mana Vault , but I will consider Basalt Monolith . I appreciate the comment to make the deck faster, and I would agree to add Sol Ring and Mana Vault as soon as possible, if my play group was more competitive.

Lastly, I agree that I need to swap the two remaining guildgates out for the scry lands, but I don't currently have excess money to spend on cards (although they are fairly cheap). I want to get the cards as soon as possible, but my decklist is a representation of the cards I currently own.

As of right now, though, I am currently trying to replace a few cards. I want to replace Hoard-Smelter Dragon and possibly Hellkite Tyrant (haven't decided on this one). I also recently got Scourge of the Throne , so I'll see how he turns out!

Thanks for commenting! I really appreciate the feedback! :)

Grizzlyone says... #39

Hey so I have been playing mayael for a while and have some ideas for you: Fauna Shaman (gives you something to use the too costly biggies for in your hand) then add Brawn, Anger, Genesis, for more tutor fodder. Also Sterling Grove + your Privileged Position, or Asceticism boom global shroud. Now for getting the biggies in cheap or even better free. Lurking Predators (nothing like top decking Godsire just cause they play anything. Lol) Hunting Grounds also always fun. And different Elvish Piper is called Norwood Priestess. Definitely try out both Warstorm Surge, and Where Ancients Tread free burn for doing what the deck does is kind of unbeatable. With those guys combo with Godsire, and Omnath, Locus of Rage If you have a Sensei's Divining Top nice to be able to draw to little thing while making sure there is something brutal to anima into play. Win condition for you Mayael's Aria you know it's not hard to hit twenty power with this deck, and can't ask to be more in theme More ideas with less explanation Spearbreaker Behemoth, Vagrant Plowbeasts, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Yavimaya Elder, Krosan Tusker, Valley Rannet, Eternal Dragon yeah I'm tired of typing all these brackets so I'm done for now.

You managed to list almost every card that had been in my Mayael deck, that I pulled in favor of more fatties and utility! I can probably add them back in, but I didn't see any gain from when they were in the deck (we will have to see). Thanks for the input!
