Marvel Team-Up: Namor / Silver Surfer

Commander / EDH Budget Competitive Four Color Infinite Combo

While The Avengers help the very real threats that exist on the physical plane of Earth, The Defenders are tasked with battling the Supernatural and Mystical forces that occur behind the curtains of the planet.

Doctors Bruce Banner and Stephen Strange, and myself - Namor, The Avenging Son, originally formed The Defenders. Soon after, I took it upon myself to include Norrin Radd, who more commonly goes by the name Silver Surfer.

We are a most unlikely band of individuals, mainly because we have rather independent tendencies. But when situations are dire, we come out in full force.

Stephen Strange had the misfortune of facing the trial and judgment of the Celestials that govern all that is, and was sentenced to have his essence scattered across the cosmos.

We thought him dead, until one day we received word from Clea that she sensed a faint outburst of power that had the same mystical properties as Doctor Strange's Seven Rings of Raggadorr. I decided the best course of action was to visit the faraway world and locate the being responsible for unleashing such a prison of magical energies.

With that, Norrin Radd and I embarked on our quest through the void of space and time.

As we approached the approximate wormhole that was predicted to send us closest to our destination, we were ominously greeted by a cosmic storm - one devastating enough to worry even the Surfer of the Stars. It would be later revealed to us that we had encountered the Phoenix Force itself.

It came into contact with us with an impact so primordial that it tore through the fabric of space-time, creating a 'Dimensional Rift.' This separated me momentarily, but Norrin was quick to recover.

enter image description here

Inside the tear could be best described as a hurricane; the mesh of gravity swirling about, particles expanding and collapsing making pocket explosions; creation and destruction were constants here. And with another violent outburst, I had lost consciousness with my final memory glimpsing at our bodies hurdling downward.

When I came to, we were on land. Disoriented and perplexed, I turned to Norrin but was met with a figure I had never seen before.

enter image description here

Assuming he was my captor, I was about to engage in combat when he revealed that HE was in fact the Silver Surfer!

Full of doubt, I began questioning him with information only a being of our planet would know. But all angles pointed toward this...person as the new body of Norrin Radd.

He informed me that I had also received a new cosmetic change. I noticed the body of water next to us and dove in, startled by what I had become.

enter image description here

It was like the amphibiousness of my ancestry consumed me entirely; mutating me further into a true creature of the waters. I had soon discovered that with this mutation came a host of powers I never had before.

It also occurred to me that I felt my power waning; Norrin Radd, or as he had discovered within himself as being identified as Ravos, Soultender teleported before me, deep underneath the waters. He told me to pause a moment, and revealed that Doctor Strange's Astral Form appeared before him while I was out cold! He's alive! Strange had explained his adventures through different dimensions, and how his spirits live on through a chosen few, and that his personal choice in pupil rests with one known as Teferi, Temporal Archmage and has been with him ever since.

From the sounds of it, we were no where near Teferi's location. Strange assured Norrin he was alright, and wished to remain with Teferi to train him further on a path to becoming a Sorcerer Supreme. He also warned that our encounter with the Phoenix Force had altered our genetic makeup and our very essence of being, to the point where we must now rely on one another; never to separate, and to act as Partners bound for eternity from here on in.

Determined to still find our friend and be reunited in person, we first wished to explore the world we were thrown into to learn more about it, and our new bodily hosts.

Inhabitants in a nearby Polis informed us that we were in a city-state called Meletis and this world was known as Theros.

It was also revealed to us that there are beings known as Gods that occupy this plane, and govern the different facets of life itself.

"They must be mutants!" I thought, or beings with powers outside of normal mortals. The true Celestials wouldn't spend so much effort on one world.

I turned to Silv...Ravos and saw his gaze transfixed upon the stars. As I looked up, I too stared in awe in what appeared to be a world that was the Night's Sky, and also something entirely different. Constellations were in constant flux, shifting about - sometimes depicting outlines of images of various things.

We were informed that what we were looking at was known as the land of Nyx - home of the gods. One god in particular, known as Xenagos, has caused quite of stir among the others. Apparently, this was one such being who contained a fragment of Doctor Strange's essence - known as a Planeswalker Spark. Discontented by what he foolishly perceived as limited powers, Xenagos sought to rise up to godhood.

As a god, he has since brought misery and agony to all of Theros. In that instant, Ravos and I looked to one another and almost telepathically came to an agreement - we need to right the wrongs in this world and free Theros from the revels of Xenagos.

In that instant, Xenagos appeared before us - the mere thought of him brought him to us.

At first glance, it was deduced that these beings are not Celestials, yet they possess powers that would certainly make these humans consider them Gods.

As Partners, Ravos, Soultender and myself, Thrasios, Triton Hero knew what needed to be done. We had to beat this very strong opponent as quickly as possible....

Hey! First off, congratulations for making it this far.

If it wasn't already totally apparent, this is my take on a partner EDH list containing Thrasios, Triton Hero and Ravos, Soultender.

I know the more accelerated decks usually prefer Tymna the Weaver as her CMC is lower, and a Phyrexian Arena in the command zone is certainly appealing. However, I prefer Ravos' abilities a bit more for a couple of reasons:

  • He lords all of our other creatures; while this isn't a core focus by any means, it's a nice static ability, and makes Thrasios a larger body to deal with.

  • His graveyard recursion. Now we're getting somewhere. I prefer this immensely over Tymna, as there are no stipulations or prerequisites; you may put a creature from your graveyard to your hand at the beginning of your upkeep. To me, it is better than Tymna requiring combat damage to be dealt before her ability works.

If you've seen a Thrasios deck, you've seen them all. It's a very aggressive combo deck that wins fast, and early. Thrasios' inherent ability to draw your deck is perhaps the most abusable of all the Partner Commander abilities.

The best way to win here is to cast Buried Alive, targeting Angel of Glory's Rise, Trinket Mage and Auriok Salvagers. Cast Reanimate, targeting the Angel, which brings the other two back into play. Trinket Mage's ETB takes effect and we tutor for Lion's Eye Diamond, and from there we can generate infinite mana with Auriok Salvagers, cast Thrasios, use his ability to draw our deck, cast Laboratory Maniac and draw once more for the win.

An alternative route, is to reanimate Necrotic Ooze with Channeler Initiate and Devoted Druid in the grave. This is another way to produce infinite mana, and one I am happy we have accessible. This wasn't possible before Amonkhet - as we would have needed Morselhoarder , altering who our other Partner would have been.

The final win condition is to with Hermit Druid, milling our deck as we only have nonbasic lands. We deck ourselves, which plays Narcomoeba, spend to unearth Fatestitcher, sac all three to flashback Dread Return, targeting Angel of Glory's Rise, which brings all our humans back. And finally we sacrifice Hapless Researcher to draw a card with Laboratory Maniac and Grand Abolisher in play.

Before I explain, I know full well over a thousand dollars is not budget. My reasoning is because I was also interested in making a deck without the use of ABR Dual lands. Strictly better than the ones I have, but this kept the cost about $1500 cheaper. Instead, we've other dual lands to tutor for, the Shock Lands from Ravnica, the Battle Lands from Battle for Zendikar and Amonkhet's new Bicycle lands.

Some spells in this deck are not cheap; Noble Hierarch, Force of Will, Flusterstorm, Pact of Negation Mox Diamond, and Lion's Eye Diamond are spells that are far from being inexpensive, but are unfortunately more necessary than the Dual lands. Some are combo pieces, some are great accelerants, and others are just the best protection and counterspells we have available.

You may note the absence of Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault and Ancient Tomb. It was a restriction my meta had come to agree on, and won't be considered for suggestion.

Nice deck though and I dig the story behind it.

SteveTheDestroyer - Fair point, I should probably look at replacing Sylvan Tutor with Diabolic Tutor ;)

I shall defer to the master of Thrasios: Lilbrudder any recommendations? I've deliberately avoided ABR lands, Ancient Tomb, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, and I just won my LGS' Quarterly Commander Tournament!

Needs more Ad Nauseam. You could also maybe replace Angel of Glory's Rise with Flash+ Protean Hulk. There is a bomberman hulk pile and a hasted hermit druid pile. There is also a no graveyard HD pile. Aside from these possible changes that arent really necessary the list looks very good

Lilbrudder I could probably just get rid of the ooze combo in place of all three of those eh? It was definitely a combo I added in to have 3 cards (and a combo that works lol) but the go to combo is LED, and HD as the silly backup (suddenly the board is cluttered with humans, lol).

How are you using nooze?

It would be another Buried alive, getting devoted druid and channeler initiate for another inf mana source for Thrasios.

The more I thought about it though, of I had an animate dead or reanimate or shallow grave in hand, I would 10/10 buried tutor for Angel/Trinket Mage and Auriok.

If you are not using it to win with HD you are better off not having it. Its not worth it for a summoning sickness win condition.

Lilbrudder yeah for sure mate. I've updated the list based on your suggestions. Thank you as always!

Any time brother. So in case you were wondering the free hasted HD pile is Mogis's Marauder, Deathrite Shaman, and Hermit Druid.

The graveyard free pile you use on your opponents endstep is Laboratory Maniac, Hapless Researcher, and Hermit Druid

There is also a bomberman pile of Karmic Guide and Viscera Seer into Auriok Salvagers and Phantasmal Image into Trinket Mage and Grand Abolisher

Lilbrudder holy crap that hasted pile is excellent. I may sub-out Fatestitcher it seems redundant in here as well. I usually have more than enough to flashback Dread Return, but I'm sure now I've said that there are going to be plenty of times when I don't lol.

I can't take credit for the hasted pile. Its the work of monkeryz, but yeah its pretty great. I dont use fatestitcher myself. I use Bloodghast, which forms a great draw engine with Skullclamp and is a great Entomb target. You can also Survival of the Fittest bloodghast into Trinket Mage for 2-4 nearly free cards a turn. Since you are doing hulk you may want to consider Necromancy over animate dead for the free sac and instant speed cast.

Noted, brosef yea Necromancy seems like it needs to be in.
