Marvel as Lazav, Dimir Mastermind plays YOUR deck!

This deck was, somewhat like Tokenism, built by me for a friend who was new to Magic. In this friend's case, he had a lot of experience with Hearthstone, so he had a lot of useful pre-existing knowledge I could reference when I explained the colours, and he decided that he'd like to play Blue-Black. After I presented him with a list of all the Commanders in that format, he chose Lazav, and I had a think about what sort of strategies I could put into a Blue-Black deck that would be fun and entertaining for a player new to magic to use while still being viable as a strategy in EDH.

Given Lazav's abilities and colour identity, I decided upon two major themes:

  1. Stealing, duplicating or mimicking other players' stuff.

  2. Zombies. Lots and lots of zombies.

On the zombie front, Rooftop Storm makes a lot of sense so he can play his Zombie cards for free, while Crypt Ghast accelerates black mana. Diregraf Captain, Lord of the Undead, Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Risen Executioner all buff zombies. Dread Slaver and Grave Betrayal steal his opponents' creatures and turn them into zombies. Army of the Damned, Curse of Shallow Graves, Grave Titan, Liliana's Reaver and Undead Alchemist all produce zombie tokens, while Endless Ranks of the Dead increases the number of those tokens every turn. Sidisi, Undead Vizier can then eat one of them to tutor, and with Ghostly Flicker she can do it multiple times. Gray Merchant of Asphodel is in there too, because you can't have a zombie party without your main man Gary.

As for duplicating and stealing stuff, Dragonlord Silumgar can straight up steal planeswalkers. In addition to duping creatures, Clever Impersonator can, somehow or other, also duplicate artifacts or even enchantments. Body Double is great because it can dupe any creature in a graveyard, which this deck is excellent at getting cards into. Evil Twin can dupe a creature and then kill it. Mindleach Mass and Psychic Intrusion both allow use of other player's spells. Dark Impostor acts as excellent (if expensive) targetted removal and ability duplication. Clone and Cryptoplasm are in there for simple, uncomplicated duping. Roil Elemental can be extremely powerful if it gets out early enough. Supplant Form bounces the creature it dupes for additional value. Stolen Identity can be paired with Aqueous Form to repeatedly duplicate things.

In terms of general EDH requirements, this deck has Decree of Pain and Life's Finale as board wipes - the latter having the added bonus of putting more creatures into a graveyard. Since the deck is meant to educate a new player about Magic, it has some blue staples: Blue Sun's Zenith, Cyclonic Rift, Ghostly Flicker and Mulldrifter, all of which are cards of exceptional value and versatility with many uses, some of which are obvious and some of which are not. Late game bombs include Army of the Damned, Clone Legion and Rise of the Dark Realms.

There's also Altar of Dementia and Triskelion in there, which along with Mikaeus, the Unhallowed are there to teach him about infinite combos.
