Maybeboard

By unpopulair demand within my playgroup, i have disbanned Marisi. I loved to play this deck, but the forced combat strategy created unfun games for opponents.

Timmy players, we all know and love them. Show

Johnny players, their usually cool! Show

Spike players, we don't take those people to kindly Show

These are the three archetypes of Magic players. But here, we make everyone a Timmy. Because we all love Timmy players!

  • Forcing opponents to attack means their left defenceless. And in turn, they can again be goaded!
  • Which makes for an insane 3 player win matchup. Once both opponents are goaded, they can hardly come back.
  • Marisi forces defensive playstyles to go aggressive, which messes their gameplan.
  • Naya has all the tools for fun games!
  • Goaded creatures need to attack. Even in your direction if otherwise isn't able.
  • This deck will be heavily Marisi depended.

The Strategy

Our CMC is not terrible, but it really could use some acceleration. Therefor:

Traverse the Outlands will often supply us every land we will ever need and with critters as Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma we can quickly get much value out of an early game.

Skyshroud Claim and Krosan Verge can fetch a Scattered Groves, Sheltered Thicket, Stomping Ground or Temple Garden.

Interesting to note is that when playing Tempt with Discovery, never instantly grab for your highest valued card. "Bait" with something simple as a Command Tower before playing a Strip Mine or Maze of Ith. I recommended to hold a Strip Mine in your deck in case someone comes with a Gaea's Cradle or a Glacial Chasm.

_"You're it!" I can already see Marisi giggle and frolic away after a connection with his opponent. Only for his opponent to bursts out in a blinding rage towards the wrong direction. Marisi however is not very good with making connections to opponents alone and he is not really evasive either. But luckily every allied creature that can connect makes a whole field Goaded, and our playground is full with evasive bodies. _

There is no point in goading players if they have no creatures so the likes of Hunted Dragon, Hungry Lynx, Rite of the Raging Storm or Tahngarth, First Mate help me with this.

And to encourage beating each others face, we include Bloodthirsty Blade, Crown of Doom and Gahiji, Honored One.

But we also don't want them to get to excited on attacking, so we include War's Toll, Kinjalli's Sunwing, Master Warcraft and Disrupt Decorum to manipulate the field for a bit.

Asceticism and Rhythm of the Wild should keep blue players at bay while Sigarda, Host of Herons does this for black (and nowadays also white removal). Crawlspace, Seedborn Muse and Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs closes our own backdoor and goaded creatures that are forced our way.

Stax can be troublesome to deal with. A simple Meekstone and Silent Arbiter have shown me difficulties with this deck. Now I also don't want to blow up whole battlefields, but simply thin it out. Beast Within and Generous Gift are very versatile on this matter.

Volcanic Offering and Strip Mine are a necessary inclusion to my playgroup. My frustration towards Gaea's Cradle and Glacial Chasm are endless.

Achieving Victory

Simply said Goad everything! We want others to play each other. And once that is over, we will trample over the remains.

My experience with Marisi so far is that once someone is goaded, they probably remain goaded. People without creatures, will have their game end quickly and oh, boy you don't want to play against a Marisi in a 3-man match!

War's Toll and Rite of the Raging Storm have been all-stars so far. They make for scary games.

Work In Progress

Primer is a work in progress! Marisi is definitely recommended for a pickup. Thoughts and feedback are welcome!

Suggestions

Updates Add

Marisi functions incredibly well in some games, in others it comes down to a 3 land or top deck struggle. Also enchantments can be a nuisance, so a little more control should lighten the issue.

Thalia, Heretic Cathar and Subjugator Angel should help contribute to goad others. Ohran Viper and Sakura-Tribe Elder will improve consistency. Back to Nature or Rampage of the Clans should improve control over the board.
