Welcome to one of the decks that features my new and improved standard and modern format! It is called ... CURRENT!
Current is very simple and very easy to understand, it applies the same principles of modern's legalities to a standard setting. Anything from M15 and onward will be legal in Current.
Sure you may be saying that this is just current standard + M15, and yes, you will be correct. But you are forgetting that when KTK and FRF rotate out of standard, they will still see play in Current, meaning an already rapidly changing and evolving format that DOESN'T render your deck non-viable. You can still play your deck, you just get new toys to add to it.
One thing should be mentioned with current as that it immediately diversifies the meta by giving certain decks the tools they need to function. Mardu and jeskai are most heavily influenced by this in the forms of Goblin Rabblemaster,
Stoke the Flames
, Lightning Strike and
Raise the Alarm
.
In addition, mono-red aggro gets Foundry Street Denizen and
Frenzied Goblin
along with many of the above mentioned cards. This makes mono-red aggro a much more viable deck.
The top deck of the season when ORI came out now becomes viable again with Ensoul Artifact, Shrapnel Blast,
Darksteel Citadel
and Chief Engineer.
Mono-green ramp decks now have viable ramp and win conditions. Elvish Mystic is a very important card to us, along with
Terra Stomper
, Genesis Hydra, Chord of Calling, Hornet Queen, and Hornet Nest.
Out of nowhere, Satyr Wayfinder becomes vital for Sultai self-mill decks. Sure there's no Whip of Erebos, but the deck is still helped greatly by that one piece.
Planeswalker control/midrange becomes viable for every single tri-colour combination. Nissa, Worldwaker is important for the green decks, Chandra, Pyromaster for the red decks, and
Garruk, Apex Predator
for the BG decks. Okay, so maybe just Temur and Jund got some pieces back, but that is still quite important for a diverse meta.
Okay, yeah, blue does get back some really good control cards in Perilous Vaults and Jace's Ingenuity. However Jace, Vryn's Prodigy
is severely weakened thanks to Lightning Strike and Phyexian Revoker being available.
