Marath, King of Utility Monsters

Commander / EDH Combo Counters RGW (Naya) Tokens

Marath is the combo king, going infinite a cup of coffee. "Marath enters the battlefield with a number of +1/+1 counters on it equal to the amount of mana spent to cast it" fairly straightforward. The important parts of Marath is the activated abilities.

X - Remove X +1/+1 counters from Marath: Choose one (X can't be zero) then do one of the 3 modes. Mode 1 - Put X. +1/+1 counters on target creature. Mode 2 - Marath deals X damage to ANY target Mode 3 - Create an X/X Green Elemental creature token.

Mode 1 - Put X +1/+1 counters on target creature. Because you can target Marath you can take a counter off of Marath to put a counter on... Marath. That sounds stupid, why would you sink mana into Marath to keep his power and toughness the same. Look at Hardened Scales. With Hardened scales you can take a +1/+1 counter off of Marath in order to put a +1/+1 counter on Marath plus another +1/+1 counter on Marath. Hardened Scales, Conclave Mentor, Pir, Imaginative Rascal, Unbound Flourishing & Doubling Season all have the same sort of effect. Making Marath big isn't going to win you the game alone though, but this effect opens up a few different combos that WILL win you the game at instant speed. Cryptic Trilobite also enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it, which needs to be at least 2 in this case. Remove a +1/+1 counter to add 2 colorless mana to your mana pool which can ONLY be spent on activated abilities. So you take a +1/+1 counter off the trilobite to add 2 to your mana pool. Use one mana to take a counter off Marath to put two counters on marath, the second floating mana to put a +1/+1 counter onto the trilobite which puts 2 counters on. Because Marath stays the same size but you net counters on the trilobite you have created infinite colorless mana that can be spent on activated abilities like making infinite counters on Marath and removing infinite counters to deal your opponents infinite damage. Runaway Steam-Kin also works the same way. Mana Echoes ALSO works the same way if you use the mana to make 1/1 green elemental tokens.

That brings up another way to win, you can make infinite creatures (using Marath's third activated ability) and turn them sideways or sac them for mana to machine gun your oponents with. Ashnod's Altar and cards like Cathars' Crusade, Ivy Lane Denizen, Parallel Lives, Anointed Procession or Earthcraft

or draw your deck with sacrificing your 1/1 green elementals with Skullclamp. You can also draw cards with Generous Patron or Snake Umbra Snake Umbra requires you to deal damage using Marath's second ability. You could also use that ability on Ripjaw Raptor to draw a card or on Ranging Raptors to ramp or even Nightshade Peddler or Basilisk Collar to kill creatures.

Have fun with Marath, it'shard to pilot but a pretty strong midrange combo deck.
