Marath in my opinion is one of the most versatile generals available. And steeped in these three colors are many options.

What I ask, is how to make it better?

Why Choose Marath? Show

Marath is a highly versatile general and can function in many different ways. To me, this makes her more powerful than any other general out there.

She can be spot removal, equipped with a Basilisk Collar one touch from her kills everything.

You can use her in a Stax/Control Strategy. Smokestack, Doubling Season, and Marath goes hand in hand.

She combos very easily. In a perfect world, Purphoros, Impact Tremors, and Earthcraft is infinite damage and infinite tokens. It occurs as early as turn 3 or 4.

Aggro? Well, she is one hell of a beast. Make lots of little babies, use things like Cathars' Crusade and haste them all for the kill.

Then there's voltron and walkers, but I'll get to that in another update.

Strategies Show

Being in green, Marath can ramp hard and fast. Be it with creatures or spells. I chose a mixture of both using only the best at my disposal.

My suggestion is to ignore colorless ramp, as they're rather weak. Artifacts do very little to help unless it's a clear advantage. Sol Ring is mostly an useless trinket compared to having 9 lands in play at the end of turn 2. Don't doubt it, I've done it quite a few times in different ways. With Lotus Cobra it doesn't matter if these lands come in play tapped. There's enough mana generated to cast Marath at least once or twice...... on turn two. If that's not advantage, I don't know what is.

Some people limit themselves to mostly nonbasics and fewer basics. They run into problems with the fact that land ramping is far more powerful than creature ramping. When there's a board wipe, you're done. Myself, I have all these lands in play. I'll survive to many things. If there's a reason for me to watch for Armageddon or the like I'll start packing in things like Sacred Ground or Avacyn, Angel of Hope

Why I believe Marath to be tier 1 explained Show

Marath, as stated before is versatile. And so are the deck styles used.

If you want aggro, she's got aggro.

If you want combo, there's always Kiki Chord to be sure.

If you want control, as if Aura Shards and Glare of Subdual weren't enough.

If you want ramp, she's green.

If you want a combination of super friends, some of the most powerful walkers are in these 3 colors. You also have Doubling Season to instantly win with certain walkers.

If you want the best removal package, Marath is your girl.

Weaknesses Show

Yes, Marath has a few glaring weaknesses. She can outgrind most grindy decks. But what about the decks that are faster? If you can't stop their combo from going off, you're done. If you're suspecting certain combos, then a Gaddock Teeg might be in order for your deck. Teeg answers many noncreature combos. Scavenging Ooze answers graveyard strategies. So... What is the deck weak against? Well... Faster combo decks. Mass land destruction or creature removal depending on your build. I chose a balanced approach, so I cannot be totally crippled by one type of destruction.
