Mairsil the Toolbox, Budget $100

Commander / EDH Budget Casual UBR (Grixis) Wizards

skrullz

Maybeboard

The goal was to make a fun, but competitive budget (~$100) deck that allows multiple ways to build up Mairsil during a game. Most, if not all, the artifacts and creatures have an interesting set of activated abilities that can be caged and leveraged by Mairsil to respond to changing board states. Mairsil is a very interesting commander that can be built in any number of ways, from highly competitive to hilarious jank, the choice is yours.

Several combos and win conditions are present inside the deck and can either be swapped in or out depending on the local meta:

The Locust God , a reoccurring threat on his own, with powerful draw spells like Blue Sun's Zenith supported by Windfall and Jace's Archivist this allows you to rapidly populate your own board with hasty 1/1 flyers to either chump block or beat down opponents. Should he somehow end up in the graveyard he can be caged by Mairsil to help enable more cages via his activated looting ability. Mairsil is already a card hungry deck, so you'll be wanting to draw and discard cards as often as you can to enable cages. The Locust God helps add even more value while you build up Mairsil.
Oona, Queen of the Fae is another large threat within the deck. Her ability allows you to establish a board presence while exiling cards from your opponents decks, or win outright once you've produced infinite mana with Mairsil. While already decent as a 5/5 flyer, her ability to exile an opponents deck at instant speed make her a threat both on the battlefield or when caged by Mairsil.
The bread and butter of most Mairsil decks, this relies on caging flicker effects such as with AEtherling or Cavern Harpy to rapidly acquire cages and protect Mairsil. Next you want to acquire ways to untap Mairsil cheaply. This can be done either with artifacts such as Thousand-Year Elixir , Magewright's Stone , or with creatures such as Torchling , Horseshoe Crab , and Cinderhaze Wretch . Finally, leveraging things that produce large amounts of mana, such as Gilded Lotus , with Quicksilver Elemental to get around the "once per turn" clause of Mairsil's caged abilities. Just remember to account for the 1 you will need to get another, fresh set of Mairsil's cages each time you go through the combo. If done correctly this should net you +1 mana each loop.

This deck runs a larger amount of creatures than some Mairsil decks due to a relatively creature heavy meta. This allows allows you assemble a semi-voltron Mairsil with cards such as Sokenzan Spellblade , Skyship Stalker , and utility creatures such as Onyx Mage and Soul of New Phyrexia to trade up when fending off creatures. The goal here was to allow you to change from combo to combat if needed.

To keep things in the $100 range it's not running better options such as Thousand-Year Elixir or Shauku, Endbringer

This is overall meant as a fun budget build, but can be rapidly pumped up to a more threatening deck using some of the cards in the Maybeboard. All critiques and suggestions are welcome!

Unfortunately the Locust has rapidly jumped in price since the initial creation of the deck. The overall goal is keep this as a fun, focused, but budget deck around $100 with the other decks in our playgroup following a similar budget.

***The Locust God is a great asset in this deck, and should you have the budget feel free to add it in. It's a immediate threat, especially with all the card draw in the deck, and is it's own win condition. Having a difficult to remove, beefy flyer that readily generates tokens while you go about your game plan is a great addition.

The Locust God -> Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind???

A better option could be either Stitcher Geralf or more interaction/card draw effects. I’ll happy to get any suggestions.
