Mairsil Demands, "It Puts the Lotion on the Skin"

Commander / EDH Combo Multiplayer U/B/R (Grixis) Voltron

Enchantment (1)

Voltron/combo deck with magic's own Buffalo Bill at the head. This crazy sadist has found himself in a magical land, so his skin suits give him magical powers!

the phrase "in the pit" refers to cards exiled with Mairsil, the Pretender's ability

I know the counters are technically cage counters, and the lore is he put ith in a cage, but come on!!!! The flipping picture is a person looking into a damned pit!

Lightning Greaves, Crystal Shard, and Riptide Laboratory

In the pit: Arcanis the Omnipotent, Cavern Harpy, AEtherling, Morphling, Torchling, Sensei's Divining Top, Mirage Mirror, Pack Rat,Ovinomancer, Skywing Aven and Crystal Shard

Have these cards in the pit at the same time:

Tree of Perdition + Hateflayer to set an opponent's life to 4 and then deal 4 dmg to them. Toss in Quicksilver Elemental to hit the whole table in one turn.

Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief//Hoard-Smelter Dragon + Pestilent Souleater + AEtherling//Jodah's Avenger to make Mairsil unblockable and one-shot infect kill an opponent. Add in Hateflayer + Quicksilver Elemental to do it without combat dmg to the whole table. All in one turn.

Basalt Monolith//Gilded Lotus + Pili-Pala + Quicksilver Elemental for infinite mana. Can use the mana to:

After a few games, i have noticed some intricacies that will require a few changes to the deck.

  • equipment is too temporary due to how often mairsil is bounced. Since they cannot be equpied at instant speed, they are subpar in this deck. So, seemingly solid includes like Illusionist's Bracers and swiftboots are actually pretty bad.

  • The more card draw spells/effects in this deck, the better. This deck loses lots of card advantage due to mairsil grabbing cards from your hand, and discarding cards to abilities. Repeatable and/or large chunks of card draw are needed. So effects like Rhystic Study and Pull from Tomorrow, respectively.

Know how Sensei's Divining Top is one of the best cards in edh? Well it is even better in this deck! Once it's in the pit, it does all the normal top shenanigans, protects mairsil from removal, and sets you up to cast him again to put more cards in the pit! It's so good i am considering putting in Trinket Mage just to tutor up top!

3 mountains on the deck... and u are planning to run anger that seems too greedy

Tyvm for the comment!

I still have roughly 16 or 17 red sources, just in my lands. I have been considering adding more untapped red sources to make Faithless Looting easier to cast in the early turns, however.

Also, i dont plan to never cast anger. He is here to be discarded to one of the many discard outlets.

I think Blacky was referring to the fact that you need a mountain in play to get haste off of Anger.

Humm, i hadn't considered that.

I assume with ~six fetches, blood crypt, and 2 mtns i should be ok. That gives me 8 or 9 ways to get a mtn out.

Once i put the deck together, I will have to test this out.

Tyvm for the pointer.

Apparently you can't get infinite mana with Sol Ring + Pili-Pala + Quicksilver Elemental in the cage. You could tap and untap Mairsil as many times as you want, but you would be breaking even on mana because you have to pay blue for the Quicksilver ability each time.

In order to generate mana, the tap ability needs to give you at least three mana. You could use Basalt Monolith, Thran Dynamo or Gilded Lotus.

Oh snap! Tyvm for the link.

I was unaware of that ruling. I made the deck when people were thinking the copied abilities didnt have the once per turn clause, or some such.

I will update the description to fix my error

Something else I noticed. Shifty Doppelganger is quite risky to use with Mairsil. If you exile Mairsil using that ability and the creature you put onto the battlefield is no longer there at the beginning of the end step, Mairsil stays in exile.

Damn, i think you're right. I missed the phrase, "if you do" or didn't consider the significance. I will have to swap it out. I know there's a Deadeye Navigator laying around my place somewhere.

Tyvm for catching that one! It would have sucked hard to figure that out during a game.

No problem. I'm in the process of building my own Mairsil deck, so I've been examining every little interaction.

By the way, you probably know this already, but Deadeye Navigator doesn't work in the cage. You use it on its own soulbonded with Mairsil (or something else).

Yep, i know Deadeye Navigator won't work "in the cage," but tyvm for pointing it out (not like i have the best record with these niche interactions!).

Unfortunately, i cannot seeem to find my deadeye, so i just slapped another wheel into the deck to help me dig for my remaining bounce/blink effects.

Also, i would enjoy seeing your list when it is finished. If you want any pointers, let me know. I have played a few games with the deck, so i have an idea of how it operates. GL with brewing!

Go to the gatherer, read the official ruling on Shifty Doppelganger. He work the way you want him to, I think. If not look into Mirror-Mad Phantasm

I was thinking of Shifty Doppelganger as another bounce affect to protect mairsil.

From what i understand, The gatherer ruling says if you dont have a creature to sac at eot doppelganger won't return from exile. If used with mairsil, that means he will be in exile forever! Sure i could return him to the cmd zone, but at that point why not just let the removal your trying to dodge kill him?

As for Mirror-Mad Phantasm, it seems too risky without Laboratory Maniac. If i had lab maniac, phantasm would be in auto-include, however. Definitely a decent combo wincon.

Good news about Shifty Doppelganger! I found out that if you put Mairsil into the command zone when you use Shifty's ability, Mairsil will return from the command zone to the battlefield if the creature is still around to sacrifice at the end step. Mairsil will not be stuck in exile. At worst, he'll be back in the command zone if someone kills off the creature.

This is because rule 903.9 is a replacement effect; you are putting Mairsil into the command zone instead of into exile. Shifty's ability states that you return Mairsil to the battlefield; it doesn't specify from where. As long as Mairsil is still in the first zone he was sent to when Shifty's ability resolved, he will return from the command zone to the battlefield.

griz024 says... #14

Oooohh! Thx Vinifera7 for digging into this perplexing interaction. That ups shifty's value quite a bit. Maybe this is what FerrumLung was talking about?

Now for the downside: trying to find room for shifty again! Dont want to cut Reforge the Soul, which is what i replaced him with, the wheel effect is too powerful, and it synergies so well with Eater of the Dead.

How so? I don't see the overlap between the lucid and the tree.

Staff of Domination is not here purely because i dont have one! It is a bit pricey.
