Here is my hand at making a Legend of Zelda themed deck. While the deck is definitely form over function I did try to pick good cards to represent different characters and places from Zelda games, while also working in a Yasova style deck. I do want to be able to play this deck even if it may be a bit under-powered and weaker compared to more optimized strategies.

When I started doing research, most of the Zelda themed decks I found used very different color pairings than I expected. Some use mono green, others Selesnya or Naya. But most use Bant. To me most of these choices make very little sense thematically. I think Rafiq of the Many is a great flavor win as a 'link' commander, but the color pairing not so much. Mono green sort of works as link is commonly associated with the color for obvious reasons, so you are basically building the deck around one character. Selesnya sort of works as Link is associated with Green, and Zelda with White through her divine light magic and the goddess Hylia. I don't really understand Bant or Naya Zelda theme decks. It feels like they are adding another color that could be explained thematically but not when paired together. If you add red with Naya, it can represent the Triforce of Power/Gorons, but then you miss blue for the Triforce of Wisdom/Zora. It feels incomplete.

In the end I decided that Temur was the best color pairing for me thematically. I picked this combination because of the Goddesses Din, Farore, and Nayru. Din is associated with Red and the Triforce of power (Gannon), Farore is associated with Green and the Triforce of Courage (Link), and Nayru is associated with blue and the Triforce of Wisdom (Zelda). These colors also match up well with the races and people of Hyrule. Hylians/Kokiri are green, Zora/Rito are blue, Gorons/Gerudo are red.

I was tinkering with the idea of making it 5 colors and have White be the Goddess Hylia and Black be Demise/Gannon, but I don't like 5 color decks and felt Temur fit the theme closely enough for my purposes. I also felt like none of the 5 color commanders came close to resembling Link. While Yasova Dragonclaw is not as good as Rafiq, she is a Human Warrior with a unique and cool ability that gets better with equipment like Hero's Blade - The Master Sword. She could come into play a 7/4 on turn 3, and start stealing 6 power creatures as early as turn 4.

For now any suggestions or comments would be extremely welcome and helpful. Some of the cards and their connections/references I am completely sold on. Others are looser and may have a better card I just never found. It's much more difficult to look up cards based on theme than on physical card abilities, creature types, keywords, ect. It took me a long time to find a card I felt could represent the Cuccos from the series. All of the "chicken" cards are silver boarded and not great anyways. I didn't feel a generic blue flyer would be a strong enough thematic connection. I ended up going with Caller of the Pack because it somewhat reminds me of attacking the Cuccos in game, then suddenly they call their cucco friends and trample over Link for massive damage. But it's not a bird, has no flying ect. I could be talked into other cards.

I made custom art proxies for the paper version of this deck and I think they came out amazing. Every card with a reference has new art that fits the reference. It took ages. Most images were taken from google image search, resized, modified, touched up ect. Lots of amazing artist renditions of characters and items. Some are screenshots from HD releases of the modern Zelda games, and some I had to Photoshop pieces together to get the type of image I wanted for the card. Wallmaster, Gust Bellows, and Boomerang are all heavily photoshopped. I created a full art version of Yasova in Magic Set Editor for the command zone, and a new Tamio due to the art behind the text box as well. If Tappedout ever fixes its alter database I will update the deck with all the alters I made. I am really bummed this feature is working. I spent so much time on these alters I wish I could should them off easily. Let me know if someone knows of another way to show off the proxies on tappedout, really happy with them. I will admit I did not reference the artist in any of the images I took to use for card art. This is just a personal pet project and I can't make any money off these proxies. But if I post the proxies and someone finds their art among the cards and wants me to remove it just let me know. Hopefully we can work something out.
