Maybeboard

I made this deck around a discard theme, the inspiration was originally from the Anje Falkenrath precon. I loved the idea of using madness and getting value off discard, so I bought the pre-con and intended to scrap it to make my own deck with some of the staple cards that come with it. However, I became enthralled with the idea of discarding for value and I decided I would like to design around the "madness" mechanic. The only problem was that I really like to be original in my ideas and play style, so using a pre-con out of the box would basically never happen for me.

From a creativity standpoint, some people may think I did the exact right thing; but the issue I faced was that a majority of decent madness cards were in black and red. Who would have guessed that "Wizards had a good idea of what they were doing?!" ... Everyone ... Everyone guess that wizards had a good idea... To really understand the scope of what I'm talking about, you need to understand that I'm a bit of a hipster; though I don't like to admit it because I think hipsters are a little too mainstream. I like my decks to be original and as unique as possible. It gives me a sense of enjoyment and fulfillment knowing I created something that was not just a carbon copy of other good ideas.

I wanted to go with a discard theme, but I didn't want to just to hand destruction like most discard themes do. I wanted to gain value of my own discard through the madness ability previously mentioned. Of course, me being me, I wanted more than just black and red as in the pre-con. I decided I needed to add an additional color to mix things up. Obviously the color I chose was green. It was the perfect color to add to black/red that would enable me to abuse the graveyard and re-use the cards I discarded earlier. The deck itself kind of evolved while I was building it, originally it was only a self discard theme, but some friends convinced me that in order to make it viable in a game I needed a way to decrease my disadvantage. That lead me to including a lot of global discard effects so I wasn't just giving away card advantage to my opponents.

At first, I loved this deck simply as a value deck that did not actually impact the game in a way that could win consistently. But as I messed with the deck more, I realized I enjoy toying with the hand and graveyard in this deck more than I do actually like winning.

The best thing, IMO, about this type of deck is that the strategy is present even without the commander. If you like to run strange interactive decks and you enjoy when it is not reliant on your commander, this deck might just be perfect for you. In fact I originally built this deck with the intent to have Xira Arien as the commander but Adun Oakenshield was what I decided on so I would always have access to recursion if I need it. That said, I found that there is enough recursion in the deck that you could probably switch the commander without impacting playability if you wanted to change things up.
