An EDH deck with the Tyrant of Orazca at the helm.

The idea here is to start with a multi-player EDH UG merfolk tribal deck, headed up by the Tyrant himself. Merfolk Tribal is where we get cards like like Cold-Eyed Selkie, Kindred Discovery and Vanquisher's Banner, as well as various Lords. Then, to abuse the Tyrant's abilities, we add in ways to untap more often - stuff like Seedborn Muse, Murkfiend Liege, and Quest for Renewal. Because we're untapping more often, we include additional ways to tap our merfolk, like Cryptolith Rite, Lullmage Mentor and Opposition.

Strategy Show

Kumena's inevitable victory will come in a variety of ways. First and foremost, Kumena himself isn't afraid to get our enemy's blood on his fins. Stoneforge Masterwork, an assortment of Lords, and Alpha Status, as well as our ability to go unblockable, will allow us to deal lethal Commander damage often. Generally, we'll want to be timely with our aggression, striking when we can make a painful impact - thankfully, we can control the tempo of the board. Many of the cards here tap down our opponenets, or bounce cards back to their hands - Opposition, Capsize, Cyclonic Rift, etc. Our strategy is completed by adding a finisher or two: Kindred Summons, cast at the end of our opponents' turn, allows us to flood the board with pseudo-hasted creatures.

Notable Cards and Interactions Show

There's a lot going on here, and a lot of it synergizes pretty well.
1. Slice in Twain. Why not Krosan Grip, or Nature's Claim? Because Jason hates this card, and I love to watch him cringe when I play it. Cards win games, people - and I make sure he knows I'm drawing one off this spell every time I play it.
2. Turnabout and Wake Thrasher. Need to deal a quick handful of damage? Tap out everything at the end of our opponent's turn, untap, retap everything for mana/Kumena, and cast Turnabout. Each untap makes Wake Thrasher more ominous.
3. Waker of the Wilds and Cascading Cataracts/Darksteel Citadel. While I'd imagine this is an obvious one, I think its important to note that you can use Waker multiple times on the same land.
4. Mana. This deck has a couple of ways to make a ton of mana, between Mana Reflection, various 'untap on other people's turn' cards, and card:Cryptolith Rites. Use this in a variety of ways: Draw cards and lay counters with Shapers of Nature, or make giant indestructible lands with the aforementioned Waker of the Wilds. Thrasios, Triton Hero can filter through your deck, draw cards, and drop lands, while Blue Sun's Zenith both combos with Thrasios and can mill out an opponent with enough oomph behind it - its the fish version of a kamehameha.

Notable Exclusions Show

There's a handful of cards that show up on EDHREC that I've opted to exclude. Here's why:
1. Merrow Commerce. I opted for Quest for Renewal instead. Same CMC, but more untapping! Getting 4 counters should be real easy under Kumena's guidance.
2. Merrow Harbinger. I'm not a big fan of tutors in EDH. I know they add consistency and increase utility a lot, but they chaffe against the intention of a singleton format. I can stomach a Forerunner of the Heralds, which is a better card, but not two tutors.
3. Silvergill Adept. Cards win games. But Silvergill just doesn't do enough in my experience. I want many cards, repeatedly. Not one, once.
4. card:Harbinger of Tides. I like Harbinger a lot. But, ever since Kopala, Warden of Waves came around, Harbinger has taken a back-seat. But, if after some testing this deck needs some extra defenses, Harbinger is right there atop my list.
5. Master of Waves. Another casualty of space limitations. If this deck doesn't generate enough board-presence, Master is going to be my go-to.
6. Herald’s Horn . Not included because I don't have another one to slot in here; the two I do own have homes in my Gishath, Sun's Avatar and Edgar Markov decks.
