Way too much draw in Amonkhet —April 17, 2017

Amonkhet gave me so many options for this deck, for now im just going to be moving around 3 pieces, but Kefnet's Monument and Rhonas's Monument will be tested after these new cards settle

For now:

Paradoxical Outcome ---> Nissa, Steward of Elements

My playgroup keeps accusing me of breaking into WOTC and planting this exact card into their private files because holy moly is it perfect for this deck. Scrying 2 for +2 is absolutely insane on a variable 3cmc+ walker. Her 0 can let me play the bulk of my deck from topdeck for free. Her neg/ult can be easily hit and I can even play her with like 20 loyalty counters to ensure some big, fast, flying death. Its in over Paradoxical Outcome because I couldn't justify having a Faith's Reward type effect over this new beauty, leaving the 4 mana open just in case someone wipes can occasionally leave me wasting turns early game.

Cryptolith Rite ---> Bounty of the Luxa

CR has been sitting in hand a lot recently or doing very little when it hits the battlefield, it might find its way back in if BotL works too slowly or I need another mana source. BotL gives me free draw and 3 free mana on rotating turns with no further investment. In most decks the mana might feel like a whiff, but adding 3 free mana to my pools on turn allows for aggressive plays with counter mana open, with free fuel this card is amazing. On paper this thing is gonna do work, we will see on execution.

Shaman of Forgotten Ways ---> Kefnet the Mindful

This may be a temporary switch, but I want to run Kefnet the Mindful through the ringer because theoretically it solves multiple problems for me. It is a big beatstick flyer with evasion, it has low cmc, and has an Azure Mage+ ability which always merits a test in this style of deck since mana sinks are always needed in here. The ability to wombo with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is too good not to test.

Thanks for reading, if you guys think anything else from amonkhet should be tested please speak up! Reset the comment section since it has been awhile, thanks for all the recommendations!

and yeah, in testing returning Sol Ring, Eternal Witness, Vendilion Clique, etc while drawing cards was just too juicy to pass up

incidentally, Torrential Gearhulk / Snapcaster Mage into Paradoxical Outcome does so much work and draws me plenty

I'm surprised I didn't see Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix in your decklist. If you're drawing a lot of cards then she's perfect bc you can tap her and get one colorless for every card you drew during the turn. If you have untap effects targeting her then you'll be getting even more mana. And with Kruphix as your commander, you can feel safe knowing that any unused colorless mana can just be stored for later.

Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix was tested for about 15 games when she came out. She either sat in hand, tapped for one mana on the field, or very rarely gave me 3+ mana. This deck values constant resource access so effects like Sakura-Tribe Elder, Azusa, Lost but Seeking, and Yavimaya Elder give me more traction.

Having to jump through the hoop of drawing excess cards and only gaining colorless mana from it isnt as handy as say selvala, heart of the wild or Somberwald Sage. Arguaby Thran Dynamo would be more reliable since there are no requirements.

At 4 cmc, she doesn't serve me as well as she could have, if she produced colored mana..I still think selvala, heart of the wild beat her out for me...but even she doesn't work as well as I'd like in thi variant.

Thanks for the rec! :)

Alright I suppose that's a pretty valid point. It may be off track a little bit I know she rocks in my Temur partner commander deck just bc of how many X cost red spells are available to take advantage of that colorless mana. Also Hydra creatures I use just eat that colorless mana up like candy

Bounty of the Luxa thanks for the goofy abusable card wizards, im definitely going to test this a bit, would be shocked if:

draw

3 mana ramp

draw

3 mana ramp

would ever be bad in here.

Also going to play around with Rhonas's monument (silly creature buffing potential) and Kefnet's monument (constant tempo abuse) though im not sure either will make it in, the potential etb abuse seems like a possible bear.

Kefnet the Mindful might be heavily tested for a myriad of reasons:

3 drop draw - gives me an early draw outlet if im utterly whiffing, Azure Mage effects are always welcome.

5/5 indestructible/flyer - Acts as an enchant until I need it to swing or block beefy flyers coming at me, flying tribal is a problem opponent with this deck.

Evasion- its a very evasive creature, not up to snuff with the theros gods, but certainly a solid 3 drop.

Land abuse- using floating mana and a blue source to draw a card and return Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx to my hand after tapping and playing it for turn comes to mind...if I like the ability I can add a few more tricksy etb lands like Mosswort Bridge into the mix

This deck consistently has over 7+ cards anyway and the added option of making 5 card hands into 7 card hands with 4 mana investment makes even whiff scenarios stable and draw/stallable

This deck never seems to have enough mana sinks and though this creature doesn't necessarily work in a vacuum, even as essentially an enchantment with an azure mage+ ability for 3 mana isn't too shabby.
