ATTENTION: This primer is not up to date with the decklist anymore, so most cards in the current decklist aren't mentioned within Card Choices.

Introduction

Throw enough goblins at any problem and it should go away. At the very least, there'll be fewer goblins.

The Base for this deck is a decklist from a mtgplayer Krenko Primer. I suggest you follow this link and share the love. Since I already own a lot of cards in this list, I thought I give it a shot and maybe change a few cards here and there. This began as a budget build, but will be upgraded with value as I keep on playing.

Card Choices

Card Draw and Tutoring Show

• Skullclamp - You need this! One of the best card draw mechanisms you can get in a red token deck.

• Gamble - Lets you tutor for anything at the cost of increased heart rate. Fun fact, a non-black Tutor that doesn't require you to reveal the card. Sol Ring is probably a good target during the early game.

• Wheel of Fortune - You run out of cards very quickly, refill your empty hand while others might have to discard something they just used a tutor for.

• Reforge the Soul - Cheaper than Wheel, if you topdeck it. Same function as above.

• Goblin Recruiter - Gives you the possibility to draw every goblin you desire, also helps you dodging unnecessary mountains in late game.

• Goblin Matron - Will often be used to get Lords, that enable haste for your creatures.

• Goblin Ringleader - Its only real purpose is to draw 4 goblin cards, after you stacked your deck with Goblin Recruiter.

• Moggcatcher - Has the power to put high CMC goblins such as Siege-Gang Commander directly into play at a discount. If you can afford it, you could tutor a Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and then tutor again.

• Godo, Bandit Warlord - Tutors for an equipment card, that may be or not be a combo piece. The additional attack phase is okay, though we don't have samurai in this deck.

Haste Enablers Show

We have a bunch of haste enablers in this deck, since we always want to be able to tap Krenko, when we summoned him. Be careful when you use certain ones, since they can backfire aswell.

• Mass Hysteria - Play this only, if you have no other option. While it's very cheap, the drawback might be significant.

• Ashling's Prerogative - We always want to chose EVEN for this, since Tokens (CMC 0) and Krenko, Mob Boss do have an even converted mana cost. All uneven CMC creatures enter the battlefied tapped, keep that in mind.

• Fervor - Now we're talking, haste for all your creatures without any drawback.

• Lightning Greaves - While the original list didn't have these, I really do appreciate the cheap way giving one creature haste and some way of protection. Krenko obvioulsy benefits from this equipment, but so do other creatures that are indispensable for our game plan.

• Thousand-Year Elixir - While it's not haste "per se", abilities such as Krenkos benefit from it. It also lets you untap target creature once, which doesn't seem much at first, but allows you to explode very quickly with Krenko. If there's a pesky player that lets you sacrifice multiple creatures during your turns, you are able to create 3 tokens with Krenko, giving you have an empty board - that will help protecting him more than once.

• Goblin Warchief - One of the lords I was talking about earlier. Helps ramping out and gives haste to all goblins, even himself.

• Goblin Chieftain - +1/+1 to all your goblins aswell? Check, please.

• Anger - Your opponents will do anything to stop you from overrunning every single one of them, so board wipes are a serious threat. This can just chill in your graveyard. You can sacrifice it with an outlet, or discard it with wheels, if you require to do so.

Ramp and Sacrifice Outlets Show

While most outlets are used as combo pieces, they can help you to utilize your creature tokens for the "greater good". Keep in mind we also have triggers for creatures entering and leaving the battlefield!

• Goblin Lackey - Played in every single goblin tribal deck. This is the most ridiculous turn 1 you can have. Unblockable is not required, since there will be at least one player without any blockers in multiplayer. Don't be scared to lose him either, if it allows you to kill a threat or to regenerate something more important.

• Skirk Prospector - Is mostly used to go infinite, but he can be useful if you are missing land drops, but drown in tokens.

• Goblin Chirurgeon - He is the right hand of Skirk Fire Marshal. Also Krenko and his Lords do love meatshields.

• Mogg Raider aka Goblin Sledder - Sacrifice blocked creatures to deal more face damage.

• Treasonous Ogre - Gives you the ability to use your life as a ressource. It can help you casting everything you need for an explosvie turn and kill. ~15 life points for an anthem, while you still have all your mana is a pretty good deal.

• Sol Ring

• Ruby Medallion, Goblin Warchief

• Ashnod's Altar, Phyrexian Altar

• Brightstone Ritual, Battle Hymn - These work very well in this deck and give you the possibility to put all combo pieces onto the board at once. Remember, Ritual gives for each goblin, Hymn for each creature on the field.

• Goblin Bombardment - Does infinite damage if you can generate infinite tokens. Also useful when all your creatures are being destroyed.

• Mana Echoes - Lets just say you have this out while your fifth creatures enters the battlefield: =4 colorless mana. Now imagine Krenko bringing in a bunch of goblins in at once: = I am too lazy to do the math, really.

Anthem Effects Show

What is better than an army of goblin tokens? That's right, an army of buffed goblin tokens.

• Quest for the Goblin Lord - A one drop quest, that is pretty easy to activate in this deck, since tokens entering the battlefield count towards the quest counter.

• Shared Animosity - Massive even at early stages in the game.

• Coat of Arms - This will kill a player after following up one or two turns of Krenko surviving.

• Obelisk of Urd - Convoke is an appreciated mechanic in this deck. Keep in mind you can tap creatures that have summoning sickness.

• Eldrazi Monument - Protects all your creatures from lethal damage, buffs them and gives them flying at the cost of 1 sacrificial lamb each turn.

Creatures and Token generators Show

Playing red, you have the possibility to play a few dozen cards, that generate us precious goblin tokens. We would put all of them in this deck, but unfortunately we cant. One moment of remembrance goes out to Beetleback Chief, who unfortunately couldn't make it into this deck. Here are the creatures and spells that made it:

• Legion Loyalist - Recently gaining popularity in modern, Legion Loyalist is a beautiful addition to this deck. It is the goblin way of overrunning opponents at the cost of 1 red mana. While Batallion is giving all your creatures first strike and trample, the ability to surpass token defenders should not be underestimated.

• Mogg War Marshal - He makes a token while entering and leaving the battlefield. Triggers! Normally we won't pay the Echo cost, so you could put the Marshal into an outlet aswell, to gain some ramp.

• Goblin Piledriver - Pro Blue! This fella can go insane pretty easily, imagine attacking one player with 20 buffed 2/2 goblins, while Piledriver attacks another player without blockers.

• Goblin Rabblemaster - Rabblemaster is half a Piledriver, spitting out haste tokens each turn at the cost of 1 additional mana and forcing you to attack each turn. Since we want to attack each turn anyways, it's just a minor to none drawback.

• Siege-Gang Commander - Krenko/we love this guy. 3 tokens and a decent burn ability make this an exceptional card.

• Voracious Dragon - This can easily finish an opponent, since it's doing twice the damage for each sacrificed creature. Good thing is, you devour if the dragon makes it onto the battlefield, so if it gets counterspelled all your creatures are still available.

• Skirk Fire Marshal - Pro Red! This guy gets rid of everything, except himself and targets of Goblin Chirurgeon . It's a boardwipe and a nuke in one. Yes you hit yourself, but that doesn't matter if you can win the game with it. Don't forget that you can stack the ability multiple times.

• Dragon Fodder, Krenko's Command - These are two 1/1's for 2 mana.

• Mogg Infestation - This card has two purposes. One is doubling all your creatures, which might be devastating if you have ETB/LTB triggers. Lets say you have 10 tokens and a Purphoros, God of the Forge - you will have 20 tokens entering the battlefield under your control, dealing a total of 40 damage to everyone except you. The other purpose is killing all creatures of an opponent, leaving him with lousy 1/1's, which aren't a problem for Legion Loyalist for example.

Shooting Damage Show

The real title should be Pinging, ETB/LTB Triggers, Boardwipes and Burn, but that's far too long.

• Last-Ditch Effort - Accurate Name: You ditch X creatures for X damage. Can be used as burn/finisher or creature/plainswalker removal.

• Goblin War Strike - Damage in number of your goblins without having to sacrifice any.

• Impact Tremors - ETB Trigger and half a Purphoros

• Bonfire of the Damned - Well known card, boardwipe and burn in one.

• Goblin Sharpshooter - Can kill any number of 1 power minions on the board. Always shoot once before something dies or to do 1 missing point to kill a creature off - repeat that process, if possible. Basilisk Collar is the to go equipment for this card, but I don't have it in this current decklist.

• Boggart Shenanigans - LTB Trigger, shooting target player for 1 damage. Bonus: You can tutor it, since it's a tribal enchantment.

• Kyren Negotiations - Good way to deal a ton of damage, if your creatures don't want to attack or have no haste. This can get out of hand easily if you have an ETB & LTB Trigger, making every token deal damage 3 times.

• Lightning Crafter - goes infinite with Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and a sac outlet, but he is also causing ETB & LTB triggers and does a decent ping to finish off creatures, players or plainswalkers.

• Burn at the Stake - Kyren Negotiations on crack. Dealing three times the damage you tapped creatures for.

• Purphoros, God of the Forge - One of the MVP's of this deck. Best ETB trigger we have, Firebreathing to all creatures for 3 mana and a body if your devotion is >5.

Utility Show

AKA cards that do stuff.

• Vandalblast, Shattering Spree - Standard artifact removal

• Tuktuk Scrapper - Artifact removal we can tutor for.

• Chaos Warp - Commander removal #1, it doesn't shuffle commanders into the deck anymore, which is a good nerf.

• Price of Glory - You don't like to be counterspelled or have players cast stuff out of their turns? Then this is for you.

• Thornbite Staff - A ton of text, we only use it for the untap effect, whenever a creature is leaving the battlefield. Good way to make a ton of Tokens with Krenko.

• Umbral Mantle - Equip 0, I love it! Pay 3 to untap your Krenko, combopiece to generate infinite tokens and give him infinite +2/+2.

• Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker - Goes infinite with Zealous Conscripts and Lightning Crafter +outlet. He can also copy your tutors, if you need to.

• Zealous Conscripts - It is a combopiece, but can actually be useful removal with a non-goblin sac outlet.

Krenko Combos Show

Umbral Mantle, Sword of the Paruns

The following combos involve making the mana to pay for Mantle/Paruns to untap Krenko and repeat the process. These are the minimum requirements, having extra goblins at the start will accumulate rewards faster. The Mana Echoes version requires three turns before it starts making extra tokens, as you net one mana every time and you need to be able to untap Krenko twice before tokens can begin to accumulate (an extra goblin at the start will skip this step). - Source

• Mana Echoes + 1 Goblin = colorless Mana & Tokens

• Ashnod's Altar + 1 Goblin = colorless Mana & ETB/LTB Triggers

• Skirk Prospector/Phyrexian Altar + 2 Goblins = ETB/LTB Triggers

• Skirk Prospector/Phyrexian Altar + 3 Goblins = Mana, ETB/LTB Triggers

Thornbite Staff

The following combos involve using a sacrifice outlet to generate death triggers as a means of untapping Krenko using Thornbite Staff. Any free sacrifice outlet will work for these combos, and adding an extra goblin (if the sac outlet isn't a goblin itself) at the start will result in infinite goblin tokens in addition to the listed effect. - Source

These combos use Kiki-Jiki's ability to make a copy of Zealous Conscripts, and then uses Conscript's 'Untap' ability to untap Kiki-Jiki. - Source

Lightning Crafter

This combo use Kiki-Jiki's ability to copy Lightning Crafter. The copy champions Kiki-Jiki and is then sacrificed to any sac outlet. Kiki-Jiki returns to the battlefield untapped, and process is repeated. If you have a haste enabler, the copies can tap to deal damage before being sacrificed. - Source

Thornbite Staff

This combo uses a Thorbite Staff equipped Kiki-Jiki's ability to copy any creature, get the value one whatever creature it is, and then sacrifice it to any sac outlet, which untaps Kiki-Jiki to repeat the process. - Source
