Korlash, Heir to Blackblade

General

Description

Sadly, I have no witty name for this one. ..yet.

I like Korlash. He's a voltron general that doesn't need to be equipped with a bunch of things to make a quick general damage kill. And with access to black's tutors and swamp doublers it's gets pretty awesome.

Sword of Fire and Ice , Sword of Light and Shadow , Sword of Feast and Famine , and Sword of War and Peace will eventually find their way in here, but not for a while yet since I just got some Swords for my Aurelia EDH If You Want Peace, Prepare for War.

I would switch your Swamps to Snow-Covered Swamps, and add Scrying Sheets, upping your lands to 37. This will potentially give you a bit more land draw. Also, add in Extraplanar Lens. Naming Snow-Covered Swamps will help very few of your opponents, and it will give you more mana to play with. And as Korlash is your key win-con, I would think about Damnation, Plague Wind, and my personal favourite Thrashing Wumpus, since wiping your own board isn't an issue! This looks like a brilliant deck to play with! I may steal some ideas from it!

I had the Snow-Covered Swamp + Extraplanar Lens idea before, but black has doublers already with Crypt Ghast and Nirkana Revenant, things that produce extra black mana whenever a Swamp is tapped, rather than a specific kind of land which is good synergy with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. So really Extraplanar Lens is kind of unnecessary.

I like me some Plague Wind, though It's just so mean. I'll try to find a spot for it sometime in the future.

I'd go with Crypt Rats over Thrashing Wumpus, personally.

And hey, if you want to steal some ideas by all means go for it.

Massacre Wurm needs a place in the deck.

Vesuva would be a nice addition since you have so much land combo stuff anyway. Also Hall of the Bandit Lord could be helpful to you since a hasty general is a lethal general

Vesuva was in this deck and was replaced with Thespian's Stage. Stage is better than Vesuva since it doesn't require that I have the land I want to copy already in play.

Hall of the Bandit Lord is a decent consideration. The mana ability would usually make me really think about using it, but since in this deck Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is a must-get every game. However, the ETB tapped is still something that I can't get around unless Deserted Temple is around.

I'd say Geth, Lord of the Vault over vampire nighthawk. He's a really sturdy alternate win con and if you have enough mana can even mill ppl out.

Other than that your deck seems to need a bit more pure card draw (only see necropotence, phyrexian arena and underworld connections) so i'd swap sword of vengeance for sword of fire and ice.

Geth, Lord of the Vault is a reanimator card above all else. And this deck does not want to mill. Lum-Dul the Necromancer was in this deck a while back, but I removed him the same reason why I don't want to use Geth. Negative synergy with Leyline of the Void. Geth also requires a ton of mana to completely mill someone out, let alone 2-3 opponents. And to me, that's mana better spend elsewhere. For example, Exsanguinate. Why mill someone out when I can just drain everyone for most of their life totals?

And Sword of Fire and Ice, along with Sword of Feast and Famine, Sword of War and Peace, and Sword of Light and Shadow are going to be in this deck at some point. I've stated that in the description. Pure card draw in black isn't an issue what with all the tutors black has access to.

a Crypt of Agadeem would be a nice one to add, and Grim Discovery to help keep Cabal Coffers on the field

@Bigteck I was never a huge fan of Crypt of Agadeem since I'll need to have at least three black creatures in my graveyard for it to ramp and the whole ETB tapped doesn't really make it good to me. However, Grim Discovery seems like an interesting 2 for 1.

how can you play Crypt Ghast in a mono black deck with the Extort that is black or white

@Bigteck Because the mana symbol is in the ability's reminder text.

Rule 903.4b: Reminder text is ignored when determining a card's color identity.

if you have Korlash, Heir to Blackblade in play, if you add and activate Cabal Coffers would Korlash become 5/5 or 10/10 when you have 5 swamps on the field?

March 23, 2013 10:52 p.m.

@Bigteck Korlash, Heir to Blackblade 's Power and toughness are each equal to the number of Swamps you control. So if you control 5 Swamps, he'll be a 5/5 at all times and in all zones. If you play and activate Cabal Coffers he will still be a 5/5 because the number of swamps you control did not change.

Korlash's characteristic defining ability only counts lands you control with the Swamp subtype. Nothing else.
