Kogla EDH - Beginner's Deck for My Athos

Commander / EDH*

Here's the deck I put together for you, buddy.

YOUR COMMANDER

Your commander is Kogla, the Titan Ape. He's got a couple things going for him. - When he enters the battlefield, he fights something. Pick a creature that's weak, but has a good ability. Kogla gets to smash its teeth in, removing a problematic threat that your opponents would be reluctant to block with. Just remember, damage is being dealt, so DON'T FIGHT A DEATHTOUCH CREATURE. - Whenever he attacks, you get to destroy an artifact or enchantment. Artifacts and enchantments are powerful and can be pretty annoying. Use this to get rid of things that are making your attacks harder - for example, Justin's Eldrazi Monument, Fuaad's Propaganda, or Ross' Dissipation Field. - For 1G, you can return a Human you control to give him indestructible. Always try and have a human out so you can use this ability. This lets him get around board wipes and spells that say "destroy." It's a very strong ability, so try and always have 2 mana around so you can use it.

HEXPROOF

Indestructible is fantastic. What makes it better? Hexproof. Board wipes usually say "destroy," which indestructible avoids, but some of the more powerful "kill a thing" spells in black and white say "exile" or inflict -X/-X on creatures, which gets around indestructible. Hexproof makes killing Kogla with those effects REALLY HARD. Alpha Authority, Canopy Cover, and Whispersilk Cloak all give hexproof to Kogla.

OTHER AURAS AND EQUIPMENT

Kogla wants haste, so he can attack on the first turn he comes out. He'd also like either trample or unblockable to get his damage through.

  • Chariot of Victory gives trample and haste, as well as first strike, which lets him kill troublesome blockers (like deathtouchers) before they can hurt him.
  • Haunted Cloak gives trample and haste, as well as vigilance, which means he can block on the same turn he attacks.
  • Loxodon Warhammer gives trample, a power boost, and also lifelink, so damage Kogla deals heals you!
  • Rancor gives trample and a power boost, and if, for some reason, it gets destroyed, goes back to your hand.
  • Whispersilk Cloak makes him unblockable, and also gives him shroud.
  • Surrak, the Hunt Caller isn't an aura or equipment, but he does give someone haste at the start of combat.

BOUNCING HUMANS

Most of the creatures in this deck are humans, the better to give Kogla indestructible. Many of them have abilities that happen when you play them, and since you'll be playing them over and over to give Kogla indestructible...

  • Borderland Ranger puts a land into your hand when he enters the battlefield.
  • Den Protector is a tricky morph, that, when turned face up, gets a card in your graveyard back to your hand.
  • Hidden Herbalists come in and can give you free mana!
  • Hornbash Mentor gives someone trample when he enters!
  • Setessan Petitioner gives you live when she enters!

CARD DRAW/ADVANTAGE Eventually, you'll want to get more cards in your hand.

  • Aid from the Cowl checks at the end of your turn if one of your creatures left the field, and if something did, it play the top card of your library for FREE if it's a permanent (i.e. an enchantment, artifact, land, creature, planeswalker). Remember, Kogla can bounce humans to your hand - meaning that Aid from the Cowl can trigger on every one of your turns!
  • Colossal Majesty lets you draw a card every turn if you've got a strong boy like Kogla out.
  • Duskwatch Recruiter is a human that lets you look at the top 3 cards of your deck and get a creature from among them into your hand.
  • Garruk's Harbinger looks at the top cards of your deck for a creature whenever it hurts someone.
  • Garruk's Uprising draws you cards whenever you play big boys, and gives them trample, too.
  • Lifecrafter's Bestiary lets you draw a card whenever you play a creature, as long as you pay G.
  • Magus of the Library draws you a card if your hand's already full.
  • Soul of the Harvest lets you draw a card whenever you play a creature!
  • Tome of Legends lets you draw cards if your commander is attacking!
  • Ulvenwald Mysteries creates clues when your guys die, which you can sacrifice to draw cards and make human tokens!
  • Viridian Revel draws you a card whenever an opponent loses an artifact (AKA every time Kogla attacks)!
  • Vivien's Arkbow lets you go hunting for creatures!

RAMP PACKAGE

Animist's Awakening, Broken Bond, Cultivate, Fertilid, Frontier Siege, Gaea's Touch, Grow from the Ashes, Growth Spasm, Heraldic Banner, Khalni Heart Expedition, Krosan Restorer, Migration Path, Nissa's Pilgrimage, Oashra Cultivator, Primal Druid, Rampant Growth, Ranger's Path, Search for Tomorrow, Skyshroud Claim, and Vernal Bloom are all cards that give you more mana. Your commander is expensive. Play these cards early and often so you can get your commander out as early as possible. Rhonas' Monument makes all your green creatures (i.e. all your creatures) cheaper, and gives something a buff whenever you cast a creature.

REMOVAL

Kogla is removal himself, but there are still going to be times where the board needs some clearing.

  • Barrier Breach can get rid of up to 3 enchantments. If you don't need to play it, you can cycle it, discarding it and getting a new card instead.
  • Broken Bond destroys and artifact or enchantment, and lets you put out an extra land.
  • Flaxen Intruder can destroy an artifact or enchantment early on that would make casting Kogla dangerous.
  • The Gallows at Willow Hill let you use your humans to destroy a creature.
  • Kenrith's Transformation lets you turn a powerful creature into a common elk with no abilities.
  • Liquimetal Coating turns something into an artifact, letting you destroy it with Kogla's attack trigger.
  • Ulvenwald Tracker makes two guys fight! Make Kogla punch a tiny boy!
