This is a Storm shell, with the newly unveiled Kess at the helm. Her ability to cast instants and sorceries from our GY during each of our turns is unbelievably potent. In short, it's like a repetitive Snapcaster Mage. The added use of using spells essentially a second time significantly improves our Storm count.

For those who may not be familiar, Storm is a mechanic that allows us to copy the effects of a spell for each other spell played before it. In Modern, Grapeshot is the staple outlet for storm, where 10 spells played before it yields 10 extra Grapeshot copies. While Grapeshot is certainly an outlet in a format with only 20 life, 40 life in EDH/Commander makes Grapeshot much clunkier to pull off. Instead, our primary outlet is with Aetherflux Reservoir, where each spell played can generate a significant amount of life that we can use to deal 50 damage to each opponent. High Tide, Bubbling Muck, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Candelabra of Tawnos are all ways to ramp sufficient mana; When you tap an Island, with both spells and Urborg, you will generate simultaneously. Ad Nauseam helps us draw our deck until we get what we need. Since our curve is very low, we can easily go about drawing the majority of our deck comfortably. From there, it's simply a case of casting spells and increasing our life exponentially to the point where we can deal lethal across the board. For added measure, Rain of Filth and Turnabout are added as an additional way to generate mana.

Much like the recent surge in Modern's Gifts Storm, Baral, Chief of Compliance and Goblin Electromancer are terrific storm enablers as they reduce the colourless mana cost for any of our Instants and Sorceries.
Her ability allows us to play spells from the grave; the ideal option would be to cast them first and repeat, but if we can't afford to be in that position we have ways of accelerating their GY placement. Bazaar of Baghdad not only allows us to draw, but lets us filter our hand and let us put spells we may need to cast in the GY. Along with that, Cathartic Reunion, and wheel effects like Wheel of Fortune let us discard our hand, draw a new one, and have our "secondary" hand in the grave.
Since the deck can be quite GY dependent as per Kess' innate ability, any graveyard hate cards, especially Bojuka Bog, can be quite detrimental. Trickbind is your best answer to stopping the triggered ability as it ETBs. Outside of that there are the staple countermagic spells that competitive decks will run, like Force of Will, Flusterstorm or Pact of Negation.

Thank you everyone who had taken the time to comment, constructively criticize and express their interest in Kess, the Meterologist!

Might I recommend Choice of Damnations?

August 13, 2017 12:33 p.m.

n0bunga says... #10

KeelHaul10 I always encourage recommendations! Might I ask why you'd suggest Choice of Damnations for a storm build? I only ask because Storm tends to run spells that are much lower in CMC, with AdNauseam being the exception.

Seems like a sweet card though.

August 13, 2017 1:24 p.m.

KeelHaul10 says... #11

Morning drowsiness, I guess? haha yeah kinda glazed past the storm part, and forgot that Kess replicates a spell once, kinda makes it not worth it. but I'm glad to see people already building around Kess.

I can't say I am a fan, what happens when they destroy your Aetherflux Reservoir? Or even worse, Exile it? Or a turn 2 Rest in Peace? It just seems way too fragile

n0bunga says... #13

I can be thankful this isn't Modern and RIP isn't always played, especially in the competitive settings since a lot of the higher tiered commanders either need a functional GY, or aren't running white - save Zur or Tazri and they're both doing something entirely different.

You Ad Naus through your entire deck to the point where you can generate enough mana to do what you need and draw your protection and counterspells. It's precisely how Yidris plays sans the benefit of Cascade. Having a pseudo-flashback ability with Kess is just a bonus. Just as a reference point, with Yidris I have comfortably AdNaus'd to 2 life, and won.

Storm is essentially trying to outpace your opponent, digging and ramping as aggressive as possible. But you likely won't play your combo piece if someone has Blue/White mana open, and if you do, you probably will have Force of Will or Pact of Negation because you know you'll win that turn.

I suppose something like Buried Ruin or Academy Ruins couldn't hurt, or anything that returns a card to my hand/library.

Valaj says... #15

Hi! I really like your decklist but i cant afford candelabra. Is it really necessary in this deck? Or can i replace it with something else?

August 16, 2017 11:54 a.m.

n0bunga says... #16

Valaj unfortunately, it's a necessary tool to the High Tide/Bubbling Muck Combo. Dramatic Reversal and Isochron Scepter go a long way, but you will still come up short in the end. Budgetary ideas could possibly include Paradoxical Outcome, and other Cheerios type spells to hopefully recast all your mana rocks to increase your StormCount.

But Candelabra/High Tide is just a powerful way at generating mana. Especially with Urborg in play - casting High Tide and Bubbling Muck now adding for every island tapped.

August 16, 2017 12:13 p.m.

Valaj says... #17

I see, thats really a shame :( i'll still try to build a 75% version of your decklist with more control to at least stabilize the board before going for a combo. I'd like to ask though, do you think i can build this deck with doomsday as the main wincon? Sorry if i have many questions, im just trying out making a competitive deck.

August 16, 2017 12:27 p.m.

Melfy234 says... #18

Any reason you aren't running Paradox Engine? It costs 5, yes, but it's a win-the-game-on-the-spot card in every storm deck I've seen, and it plays particularly nicely with single-mana spells and card draw, both of which you have in abundance.

August 17, 2017 1:13 p.m.

n0bunga says... #19

Yeah it really isn't needed in this. In the cEDH meta, it's not viable enough to warrant a 99 slot in accelerated Storm generals like Jeleva, Yidris, and more recently Kess. Especially when our main ways of generating sufficient mana are our lands with High Tide and Bubbling Muck, something that untaps all nonland permanents doesn't really benefit us as greatly as it does ElfBall decks, for example.

With the way this works, you're primary goal is to get AdNaus. The moment it resolves you should win.

Just for reference, the Tiered lists for both Jeleva and Yidris storm builds also do not run Paradox Engine, and I could imagine those Deckmasters probably came to the same conclusion.

Appreciate the suggestion though!

...I have been misreading Paradox Engine for months now, and, uh... whoops. Nevermind then. I have some friends to apologize to.

gman10 says... #21

Why aren't you running Dimir Signet and Rakdos Signet? They seem better than the talismans . Just wondering.

August 17, 2017 2:07 p.m.

n0bunga says... #22

I'm not as fond of the signets as I'd rather unconditionally tap a rock for mana, rather than restrict a mana to get access to "more". They aren't inherently better either, as a signet requires an additional manasource to get access to 2 mana (spend 1, tap 1, get 2), whereas the other is a straight up 1:1 (tap 1, get 1). The life loss is inconsequential imo.

TzickyT says... #23

i m looking to get a grixis deck going but poorly enough i don't have the money to go for a deck like this any suggestions u can give me to make it more budget ?

August 18, 2017 7:37 a.m.

n0bunga says... #24

TzickyT I can definitely give some budget restrictions just keep in mind it may not be as fast, and you will be at a greater disadvantage with AdNaus.

Rather than candelabra, a slower method would be Deadeye Navigator soulbonded to Peregrine Drake. The reason I don't suggest Great Whale or Palinchron is because their CMC is just too high - significantly hurting you with AdNaus unless you happen to have them.

Mana rocks are tough because their potency lies with their mana cost. If you had pick only 1 I'd probably vote Mana Crypt since it can help with Doomsday.

The others could be replaced with Chromatic Sphere Terrarion etc - they at least make mana and their casting cost is low.

Other untap effects could be stuff like Turnabout and Snap.

Flusterstorm and Force of Will could be replaced with Counterspells like Foil. I'd probably still recommend Pact of Negation for its possibility in Doomsday.

Hope this helps!

my trouble is that i enjoy the wizards and would like to build a deck with them - the only issue is that i am not a blue player and all cards above 25 Dollar i mostly never buy

August 18, 2017 9:47 a.m.

n0bunga says... #26

Ah. Then yeah I would probably recommend Inalla over Kess if it's just strictly Wizards. Or Mairsil if you to have fun with Mana Rocks and ETB Wizards/Creatures.

RedRCPB says... #31

So do you think as a possible replacement for the Candelabra you could use something such as Reality Spasm? It would both increase the storm count and untapped several of your lands and artifacts as opposed to just lands. Maybe I'm missing something... I'm still pretty new to the game. Deck seems pretty cool wish I had the money to build it lol.

August 18, 2017 10:44 a.m.

n0bunga says... #32

RedRCPB Yeah that's definitely a way to do it, but unfortunately the best you could do is once or twice. Unless you run something like Reiterate. But thank you for that, that's another budgetary option I've never heard of!

August 18, 2017 10:51 a.m.

quick question, in my goldfishing i notice LED is mostly a dead card. is it really needed in the list or am i just bad at playing the deck?

August 18, 2017 12:03 p.m.

Daedalus19876 says... #43

n0bunga: I know you know this, but I'm highlighting it for others:

Just remember that you can't use Lion's Eye Diamond's mana to cast anything from your hand, because you must discard your hand before casting the spells, and you can't activate it for mana after declaring the spells (because of the instant-speed-only clause).

LevahnTaupe says... #53

+1 Nicely done. I would like to recommend Mirage Mirror

August 18, 2017 4:26 p.m.

n0bunga says... #54

LevahnTaupe thank you! Mirage Mirror definitely seems like a great include for a lot of EDH builds. At the moment the CMC is a little bit too high for what I'm trying to do, but I'm definitely curious to see some fun mirror shenanigans!

August 18, 2017 4:46 p.m.

LevahnTaupe says... #55

No problem! Mirage Mirror is just one of those amazing cards in EDH. If you do decide to try it out let me know the outcome.

August 18, 2017 4:49 p.m.

n0bunga says... #56

Daedalus19876 precisely. So to add on, staple combos like Bomberman work because you can crack and float LED's mana, and use that to activate Auriok Salvager's ability.

But you cannot crack LED, and claim to make and in response to that use those to cast Dark Ritual and Cabal Therapy. You may cast those, but only in response to the activation of LED (so you would need the mana from elsewhere).

August 18, 2017 4:49 p.m.

Lorderos23 says... #57

You can't respond to the LED activation. The activation and resolution is a mana ability. You can hold priority while casting sometime and crack it; but you can't crack LED and then respond to it on the stack.

Right. Apologies for the mistake in terminology.

August 26, 2017 8:08 p.m.

Smootvicious says... #60

Thoughts on Soothsaying? I've had it help me really dig for what I need. Budget friendly too.

August 30, 2017 10:59 a.m.

n0bunga says... #61

Syncs It's certainly fine to draw, my only concern there really aren't replaceable lands here, and Bazaar of Baghdad works as graveyard fuel for Kess as well as being able to draw 3.

Smootvicious definitely fine for budgetary restrictions, but this build is operating under budgetless parameters.

August 30, 2017 11:08 a.m.

Smootvicious says... #62

Do we have any win condition other than praying to stick the Aetherflux or getting off the rolling earthquake?

Also, have you considered Doomsday Combo in the list for more win cons?
