Typically plays as a standard Grixis control deck until it's ready to play one of it's X-spells. Kess allows the deck to prematurely fire a couple of the X-spells and allows the deck to more easily play out of the graveyard and lets the deck play with Exsanguinate and Torment of Hailfire.

The relatively low land count is partially mitigated by the amount of cards that cantrip and mana rocks, at least allowing for myself to hardly ever find myself lacking mana. However this deck does fold to repeated land/mana rock disruption/destruction.

It finally happened, Pyromancer's Goggles and Primal Amulet  Flip finally got cut, in their place came single target removal options Go for the Throat and Terminate.

Also in the cut list were Electrodominance and Treasure Cruise. Electro got booted for just doing enough when I wasn't winning and needing an inordinate amount of setup to really win the game. i.e. it needed at least one copy of itself on the stack and a hand full of copy spells to cast off of the copy on the stack to copy the original as many times as I had copy spells in hand. In came Sinister Sabotage that basically draws a card and Brainstorm, the latter is replacing Treasure Cruise as it doesn't need setup and can be used to shuffle away bad cards in-hand.

Next on the metaphorical chopping block for the deck is Melek, Izzet Paragon. I found that he tends to be just a little slow at 6 mana and he doesn't play particularly well with the deck's goal of fire off one mid sized X-spell but copy it one or two times. However, the Paragon does allow the deck to play a bit different and cast from another zone that isn't just the hand (like Kess). He also benefits from the inclusion of brainstorm and can copy an X-Spell himself, which is why I consider him a second commander for the deck.
