Kenrith, The Returned King

Welcome to my first primer on a new and exciting deck! Kenrith, The Returned King aims to win through infinite mana to do whatever you want. Do you like winning with hasty stomps? Do you like milling your opponents to death? Do you like gaining lots of life? Do you like Reanimation? Guess what Kenrith does it ALL.

But for the sake of time, we will discuss the path most easily accessible. To do that, first we need to discuss how we plan to pilot this deck. I’ve always been a fan of choice, allowing for pivots and change if needed. Have multiple purposes for each card in a deck, allowing adaptation and evolution through any game. With that said, let’s begin to delve into Kenrith.

P.S. quick shout out to Shaper and the folks on the Kenrith discord.

Without further delay.

Kenrith.

Because the way forward is in the amount of mana we have access to, I’ve included as many cheap mana dorks and rocks as I could giving the deck explosive turn 1 and 2. We should easily have access to 6-7 mana by turn three. Every time. With that mana we can do many things but mostly we should be able to identify which path to victory we’d like to take.

More than anything, simply look to get infinite mana. That’s all. No other stuff, just get infinite mana and you win. Find ways to make a lot of mana, which leads into that infinite mana.

Chrome Mox – Free any mana, auto include with most decks but it serves our deck well.

Arcane Signet – Hello upgraded Fellwar stone

Lotus Petal – I’m still on the fence for this, but it is free mana. However it will need to showcase it’s value in time.

Mana Crypt- Well its mana crypt

Mana Vault – 1 for 3 colorless, really is aimed to push the commander out or surprise with an early big play.

Mox Diamond - Free any mana, auto include with most decks but it serves our deck well.

Sol Ring – Cause sol ring

As we are looking to get the most value as early as possible I’ve included the following mana dorks. Note that each mana dork/ mana producer works to benefit the game plan.
  1. Avacyn’s Pilgrim

  2. Birds of Paradise

  3. Arbor Elf

  4. Deathrite Shaman

  5. Elves of deep Shadow

  6. Elvish Mystic

  7. Elvish Spirit Guide

  8. Fyndhorn Elves

  9. Incubation Druid

  10. Llano War Elves

  11. Noble Hierarch

  12. Priest of Titania

  13. Golden Goose

  14. Bloom Tender

With utility creatures and artifacts I’m looking to either duplicate our win condition, deal with a threat, or search for a card.

Gilded Drake

Scroll rack

Jace, Vyrn’s Prodigy

Thrasios, Triton Hero

Vexing Shusher

Notion Thief

Dark Confidant

There are two hulk lines that will win us the game. The first line,

Flash in Protean Hulk, Grab Temur Saber tooth and Dockside Extortionist. From here you can generate mana if there is at least 5 Artifacts/Enchantments on your opponent’s battlefield.

Second line: Flash in Protean Hulk, Grab Vigean Graftmage, Torch Courier and Incubation Druid.

With the infinite mana you draw out your opponents, swing with infinitely big haste creatures yada yada.

Protean Hulk

Temur Sabertooth

Dockside Extortionist

Vigean Graftmage

Torch Courier

Incubation Druid

We also have some sweet back up with Tooth and Nail, grabbing Dockside Extortionist and Temur Sabertooth.

Sorcery: Sorcery’s we have are draw or tutor. We also have a mass removal spell for some back up.

Demonic Tutor

Gitaxian Probe

Imperial Seal

Ponder

Preordain

Regrowth

Toxic Deluge

Yawgmoth’s will

Wheel of fortune

Timetwister

Instant: The instants in the deck are pretty normal in regards to Cedh. We have access to all five colors, so we can be pretty selective of which interaction we choice.

  • Abrupt Decay
  • Ad Nauseam
  • Assassin's Trophy
  • Brainstorm
  • Dark Ritual
  • Dovin's Veto
  • Enlightened Tutor
  • Fire Covenant
  • Flash
  • Force of Will
  • Lim-Dul's Vault
  • Mana Drain
  • Mental Misstep
  • Mystical Tutor
  • Noxious Revival
  • Pact of Negation
  • Silence
  • Summoner's Pact
  • Swan Song
  • Tainted Pact
  • Vampiric Tutor
  • red elemental blast

Enchantments: I’ve gone back and forth on which enchantments to utilize here, but all in all it comes down to ability to draw and ramp. So I’ve cut what I can and am happy with these enchantments.

  • Carpet of Flowers
  • Mystic Remora
  • Necropotence
  • Sylvan Library
  • compost
  • Smorhering tithe
After some play testing, I found that the deck had great mana starts but no gas to back it up. I brought in some wheels and notion thief to provide so additional draw and hand disruption . And with the addition of Timetwister if we go into a truly grindy game, we can reset or go into twister loops. But I sincerely doubt we will ever need to.
