An Overdue Update —Dec. 28, 2015

I know I said I would post this update on Christmas, but I forgot about it. I had a lot on my mind

So, here are my thoughts on the deck. Kalemne screams voltron most of the time. The other 2 strategies I mentioned in the description are semi-rare/rare occurrences, though the Sunforger engine is more likely thanks to the equipment tutors.

So, while this deck was one of my better builds, I do feel a need to span out into other decks. Problem is that I don't have enough staples to use the same color twice, for example (Yeah, good luck to me for getting a second Wheel of Fortune or a second Plateau). So, bottom line is, I need to put the deck on hiatus again.

So, where will the future take us? I'm just going to allay your fears and say that the deck will return. I'm not getting rid of the deck pieces, they're just cannibalized for other decks. Right now, I've built Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh  Flip, and (FINALLY!) acquired a Hazezon Tamar, so I'm building him, too. Those two don't overlap, which is something I like.

I did learn a considerable bit about who I am as a player, however, thanks to Kalemne. I know I'm an aggro player whose core color is Red. Isn't that ironic? I always hated Blue, think White and Green to be too linear for my tastes, and Black to be ok.

So, with all that being said, I will see you guys when I rebuild the deck next. I thank everyone for the support this deck has received.

P.S. If you have any suggestions (especially from new releases, like OGW), feel free to leave a comment (and a +1 if you like), and I will respond when I can.

Ravolt: I didn't really either until now, so it's cool.

CptCrumpet: First off all, thanks! :D Everyone is terrified of this deck at my LGS. I am constantly a threat, and I may need to find ways to hold up in the event of Archenemy shenanigans.

Also, about Dragon Mage, it's a long story: Boros sucks when it comes to card draw, and it was a constant problem. The stuff I had earlier helped, but it wasn't enough. Outpost Siege worked, but it is slow. Then I added Knollspine Dragon, replacing Duplicant (See update for reasoning). This fix tore me inside because I was trying to decide between it and Dragon Mage. In the end, I decided to add both, removing Balefire Liege in the process.

The fix will be in the next update, but I'll post it now (since the update is getting a little crowded): Balefire Liege, though I rarely draw it, was underwhelming. It really was only good with Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas out. We have Bastion Protector, who does the same thing for 2 colored mana less, and grants indestructible. Then, we have the Lightning Helix effects. White was useless because lifegain rarely mattered. If the red ability said creature or player, I may not have removed it. Also, because we have mostly mono-colored creatures, we'd only get one trigger, and let's face it: Lightning Helix doesn't do much in EDH, and Balefire Liege isn't going to grant too much value. I'd rather have one more card draw spell in its place.

Thanks for explaining the change Phaetion.

I'm building a Kalemne deck myself and have been scouring the internet for peoples opinions and ideas. Your deck is definitely one of the better, more unique lists I've seen and the fact that you give detailed descriptions behind each change really brings to light the strengths and weaknesses of this commander.

I will be checking back here every now and then to read your updates as I have found them very useful.

Anytime. I'll go ahead and make an emergency update (The one on Christmas Day will still happen). Thank you for the compliment(s). :)

I haven't seen anything good on Anya, Merciless Angel, who is another Boros general I want to build. Why do people hate Boros so much? So many good cards are underrated because of this invisible stigma.

Weirdhat: The problem with Dream Pillager is that Boros is not so good with its ramp, and you would have to try and cast all ~4 cards at once. When you're tapped out, it's a bad situation to be in.

What if you aren't... tappedout, what if this guy gets to connect several times. You don't have to discard your hand. You might still get your land drop so that you can recast your general. I was also thinking Outpost Siege might be worth a look.

Weirdhat:

  1. Outpost Siege is already there.

  2. True, but even then, my seven drops are rather tight right now. And I can't play lands because the card specifically says "nonland."
