Focused Kalamx EDH Control Deck

My first control-type decklist uses Kalamax, the Stormsire to copy instants in order to intercept enemy plays and search for answers. Wincons are copies of Soul's Fire with an / Kalamax, insanely many copies of damage spells like Lightning Bolt, enemy spells stolen with Reverberate type cards or just pure commander damage.

  1. **MULTIPLY** The main goal of this deck is, of course, copying spells. Every instant and sorcery which will be listed in the following sections, can be greatly improved if it is copied. While Kalamax is a great way to copy one instant each turn, there is more to the puzzle. Key pieces are Thousand-Year Storm, Twinning Staff and Swarm Intelligence. Having all three on the board can turn into a real mess for your stack: Lightning Strike + Narset's Reversal together with any of the three is a great way of learning how they synergize and how you arrange your triggers and targets for maximal copies. Other means of copying spells are Dualcaster Mage, Increasing Vengeance, Refuse / Cooperate, Reverberate or Twincast. Note that some of those provide the means to get an / Kalamax which will be discussed in a later section. Some more niche ways to copy spells are Ral, Storm Conduit, The Mirari Conjecture and Wort, the Raidmother. While The Mirari Conjecture also provides recursion for some of the key instants and sorceries, Wort let's you tap Kalamax. Note that he doesn't see the initial cast trigger, when tapped with Wort so rather use it on one of the sorceries. Ral is also an easy way to win the game, which will be discussed later on.

  3. **RAMP** While there are many standard ramp cards like Sol Ring, Fellwar Stone, Arcane Signet, Nature's Lore or Rampant Growth, some cards are on a whole new level when cast with a tapped Kalamax or other means of copying. Crop Rotation, Harrow, Evolution Charm, Natural Connection and Growth Spiral provide exceptional ramp when copied even just once. In many situations you will find yourself with the original cast and 3-5 copies which can get you ahead of your opponents really quick. Note that copies of Harrow and Crop Rotation do not require you to pay the additional cost as they are not cast. I included some standard mana dorks like Birds of Paradise, Arbor Elf and Rattleclaw Mystic to make some of the more expensive cards like Etali, Primal Storm or Thousand-Year Storm playable. Also note that Kalamax becomes quite expensive if removed just once.
