Kaalia EDH —Dec. 29, 2012

Added Quicksilver amulet for more options to put creatures quickly onto the field. With the banning of Griselbrand I've moved him into the side board and added back in kokusho to the mainboard. With the release of Return to Ravnica also added Angel of Serenity, Rakdos Lord of Riots, Dreadbore, Utvara Hellkite, Chromatic Lantern, and Vandalblast. Still looking to acquire a Damnation but other than that have no further changes planned until the release of Gatecrash.

Comments and feedback are always welcome :)

This was designed to be able to take full advantage of Kaalia's abilities while keeping her alive via cards like mother of runes, devoted caretaker, darksteel plate, lightning greaves, etc. This, as well as being able to simultaneously handle a variety of different board positions and opponents/deck types. Plan "A" is always to try drop fatties with Kaalia and plan "B" is to wrath the field and start over if things fall apart. Lots of tutoring, artifact/enchantment destruction, and mana fixing were also priorities.

Comments welcome.

Why is Vampiric Tutor in your maybeboard?! That card is insanely good.

I'd also remove Inferno Titan : I know it's good, but you're forced to hard cast it so it kind of goes against the idea of the deck, don't you think?

lol, i completely agree with the tutor but the problem is that I don't happen to own one, yet :P I've been periodically looking in the card shops around town but no one seems to be able to get it in stock. Imagine that, people not wanting to sell an awesome old card, eh? :P

While I am forced to hard-cast it, the titan plays very well with my theme of "comes into play effects" (which I can recur with volrath's, mimic vat, and beacon) and creatures that can win the game or drastically change the board state. Another reason he stayed in the deck was because while play testing I found that having to hard-cast it wasn't actually prohibitive with all the mana fixing and ramp I put in.

What do you think of the army of white weeny utility creatures? I'm trying to decide if they fit well enough considering I usually wipe the board several times a game. :P

The utility creatures seem good to me.

There's another strategy involving Kaalia that you might want to consider: play Kaalia and destroy all lands in play. You'll be still dropping fatties, while your opponents will have to start over.

If you want to go down that road you should add 2 or 3 of the following:Armageddon , Ravages of War , Catastrophe , Boom/Bust , Impending Disaster .

There's another funny thing you can do, but it requires at least 14 mana and for Kaalia to be in the command zone so it's a bit impractical:

  • Tap for 14 mana
  • Cast Decree of Annihilation
  • With the remaining 4 mana cast Kaalia from the command zone
  • Attack for 2 commander damage each turn until you top-deck a fatty and win the game

As I said: it's very impractical, but if you can pull it off it would make it an EPIC win.

Hmm, yeah, I'm just trying to improve the overall balance of the deck and I seem to be heavy on the white side of things :P

I've considered this before and even had boom/bust and cataclysm in the deck. I think I might put in an Armageddon and/or cataclysm and I'll have to play test around with it again and see how they actually work out.

The other option i've been batting around is to hard drop angel of desolation. Thoughts?

I actually happen to own an impending disaster but I don't like the idea of it being an enchantment and taking at least one more turn to blow.

Ravages is just stupid to actually find a copy of so that one is out ;p

Boom/bust is a little bit too high on the curve for me to truly justify. If you look through the deck list closely you'll find that almost anything I'm hard casting doesn't exceed a CC of 4, with a few minor exceptions. I was finding that when i added anything greater the tempo of the deck started to lag and I wasn't able to keep the pressure up.

lol, yeah, decree is just way out there :P It would be funny but totally impractical for me.

I have a couple of questions:

Cataclysm or Armageddon?

In the interests of balancing and improving the deck I'm considering:

damnation -> day of judgmentVampiric tutor -> ? some other white card?Armageddon/Cataclysm -> _?

Also, land suggestions?

I'd skip the Desolation Angel : it's expensive to cast so you might just drop Armageddon .

I'd also avoid Cataclysm as your opponent could still hold on to some nasty permanents.

Damnation is a definitive yes: I'd put it in place of card:Black Sun's Zenith as it allows you to sweep the board for a much smaller cost.

Your mana looks fine, although mana ramp in EDH is always a bit tricky to get right without some thorough playtesting.

I actually want the black sun because it answers indestructability and recurs itself easily. Also, I can"aim" it and clear smaller things while potentially leaving my big stuff alive.

I would honestly trade damnation for day of judgement because it balances the color radios better and prevents regeneration.

I actually acquired a vampiric tutor today so I need to find a home for that. I'm thinking double cleave fire it maybe?

I'll have to find an armageddon to test out now.
