Jund

A little over a year ago, I decided I wanted to break into modern, I was tired of Standard. I played some jank decks here and there, sampling the massive card pool, then I decided I wanted to build something that could compete, and be built over a long time.

I scoured the net, reading about all sorts of decks that seemed cool, and some were just crazy. But then, I saw an article by Reid Duke about Jund. I had heard of Jund before, but at the time I mostly played blue variants.

Reid said "Playing Jund is about systematically dismantling your opponent."

At that moment, I knew this is what I wanted to play, so I read tons more articles about the deck to learn all I could, and then I went to my LGS and traded in tons of random cards to finance the start of this deck.

Jund is one of the fairest decks around...there are no easy matchups. They're all close to 50/50, it takes a knowledgeable pilot to win consecutively.

This is something I've been working on for a while. I'm now needing the power cards and those are expensive so unfortunately, deckbuilding progress is gonna slow down.

This is a work in progress, so basically Sylvan Advocate is Tarmogoyf. Obviously they aren't the best but they're temporary and they get the job done.

Inquisition of Kozilek basically a proactive counterspell. I can take almost anything relevant from my opponent's hand.

Thoughtseize Stronger version of the above. Life loss hurts, but sometimes you need to broaden your scope a little bit.

Liliana of the Veil The Queen of Jund. Her +1 empties the opponent's hand while Dark Confidant keeps ours full. The +1 applies pressure by threatening the ult but also makes it harder to answer her. The -2 is great for repeatable removal and the ult just wins games when you rarely get it off.

Kolaghan's Command great 2-for-1 that's always relevant. Good topdeck to Disentomb, then Shock something or Raven's Crime my opponent. Also great to Shock + Shatter against affinity. Another interesting thing is to force a discard of opponent's topdecked card during their draw step.

Terminate best creature removal in these colors.

Dreadbore almost as good as terminate, but can't hit manlands or deal with infect as well, but it can hit planeswalkers like Nahiri, the Harbinger and Karn Liberated

Slaughter Pact I love this as a way to lull opponents into a false sense of security, which opens them up to blowout scenarios. Also great with kalitas and dark confidant.

Abrupt Decay some say it's less valuable in a twinless world, but it still has tons of targets and is very powerful.

Maelstrom Pulse sometimes a worse Abrupt Decay, sometimes better. Necessary evil.

Lightning Bolt Doesn't need explained. It's great and we run 4.

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet Tailor made for this deck. He just generates value from killing things like we normally would, he can grow to be harder to kill and gain more life. Very, very good against the "deck to beat," which I believe to be melira company.

Scavenging Ooze Great beater, gains life and disrupts. Hates on anything that likes graveyards: Opposing Tarmogoyfs, Snapcaster Mage, living end, Grixis, etc. 3 of these with the kalitas is plenty of graveyard hate I think.

Sylvan Advocate Isn't the best early game, but a 2/3 vigilance can tangle with most early creatures and late game it's a 4/5 vigilance that pumps Manlands!

Huntmaster of the Fells   Pretty good against midrange and other slower decks that empty their hand. Also helps stabilize against burn. Worst case, a 2/2 token and +2 life.

Raging Ravine grows out of control really quick and knows how to bring the pain. I want to see this almost every game and that's why I'm testing out 4 copies.

Hissing Quagmire Most the time functions as a Slaughter Pact since you can use it while your hand is empty. Been fairly impressed with the results.

Dark Confidant He's the best source of black card draw and this deck has enough life gain to offset. Can also be relevant in combat.

My SB is full of versatile cards that fill different scenarios, so my 15 card sideboard is much bigger than it seems.

Fulminator Mage Greatest land destruction ever. Can beat on opponent if needed and can be sacced in response to removal or blockers if need be. Against tron is sacced immediately.

Ancient Grudge Comes in vs affinity and other decks that run too many artifacts for Kolaghan's Command/Abrupt Decay to handle.

Shatterstorm Really puts the nail in the coffin for affinity, mainly to deal with Etched Champion, who's just a real problem.

Languish Board wipe for those aggro and midrange decks. To be upgraded to Damnation soon.

Engineered Explosives I've flip flopped back and forth with using this. It can be cheap and is very versatile with killing different permanents.

Night of Souls' Betrayal Our token killer of choice. It can also shut some creature decks out of the game after you stabilize. Nukes Lingering Souls, mana dorks, hurts affinity, sword foundry, locks infect out of the game, etc.

Olivia Voldaren Really shines in aggro and midrange matchups. Kills things and puts on muscle, plus she flies. Also kills thopters.

Thrun, the Last Troll Added as a concession of the inevitable rise of the blue decks. These decks just can't handle Thrun.

Grim Lavamancer Great repeatable removal that stops many decks and definitely helps when I'm on the 'Kill Everything' plan.

Duress great additional hand disruption against control, combo and burn.

Painful Truths I feel like this is the best option for card advantage in the current meta. It's bad on t3, but good later on. Outpost Siege dies to Nahiri, the Harbinger, Chandra, Pyromaster doesn't do enough IMO and Ob Nixilis Reignited is too expensive for me.

Crumble to Dust Added a 4th LD spell, because Big Mana decks are about 20% of the meta currently and another spell to hurt them wouldn't hurt. Also considered Boil.

Kitchen Finks This guy generates alot of card advantage as opponent tries to remove it. Also fairly good in combat.

Leave feedback if you feel the need and +1 if you think it looks good.

Also, before you suggest a common Jund card, such asTarmogoyf, etc please check here -Jund Need to Buy- first to make sure I don't have it on my list.

Maybeboard:

3x Kitchen Finks I thought it was strange when Reid Duke did this in lieu of board wipes, but these cards help you pull ahead in other ways in those matchups, while being very powerful in control and midrange mirrors. Might test and see how it goes.

Boil Another LD spell if Big Mana gets really popular (There's at least 3 in my meta so far), I like that it's instant and destroys, which makes it better than Choke I think.

Round 1 - U/R Sneak and Show 2-0

This guy was on a Through the Breach combo, utilizing Wurmcoil Engine and Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Scary. Luckily, he was manascrewed game one and game 2 I kept him off the combo. Beats with Ravine pretty much won both games.

Round 2 - Eldrazi Tron 0-2

Made a few misplays here, doing +1 with liliana instead of -2 when he had one creature on the board twice. Not sure what happened but it happened both games and later he admitted that at that moment I had lost and could've possibly won otherwise. Not sure what I was thinking but it happens I guess.

Round 3 - Grixis Control 1-2

G1 I mulliganed to 5 after drawing two 1 landers and finally kept a 2 lander. He was on the play, inquisition on me and took my inquisition. Great, now I wasn't sure what I was up against for a couple turns and I think that cost me G1. G2 was a long grind fest and I eventually got him down with Raging Ravine and a bolt to finish. G3 I just drew the wrong half of my deck, all threats and no disruption and finally lost to a dark dwellers targetting visions, next turn, took 4, then another dark dwellers targeting bolt and finally, took 8 from two dark dwellers.

Round 4 - Infect 1-2

I've seen this guy around this LGS and he's super cool. He made a few comments about how he played Jund as well and that this would be an easy win for me. That would be true...except on the games I lost I drew all the wrong stuff, creatures with no removal. To make things worse he drew most of his creatures every game and I just couldn't keep him off me during the games I lost. I did win G1 though with a ton of disruption via liliana and 3 discard in opening hand.

Against Eldrazi Tron I made some misplays that cost the match, but against the other two, I felt like I really drew the wrong half of the deck and didn't see any of my sideboard cards. Not sure how to prevent this. Thoughts anyone?
