"Kill a creature, destroy the present. Kill a land, destroy the future."

Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper is criminally undervalued!

Most people see a creature with a mediocre ability, I see a token generating powerhouse with untapped potential.

Typically, Sek’Kuar decks exploit token doublers (Parallel Lives), mini-Sek’Kuars (Pawn of Ulamog), or artifact combos (Ashnod's Altar + Nim Deathmantle).

I’ve experimented with this ”token madness” approach for close to two years now and it can be quite powerful, but it’s easily outclassed by fellow Jund powerhouse, Prossh, Skyraider of Kher.

Sek’Kuar has been in desperate need of his own identity and I believe myself, and the other Jund enthusiasts out there, have finally found it...

Land Destruction and Land Animation!

I understand that land destruction is seen as “taboo” in a lot of Commander playgroups, but in order to maximize Sek'Kuar's potential you have to be willing to fight a little dirty. Sek’Kuar isn’t destroying lands to troll or stall out games, he’s exploiting lands to set up explosive, game winning plays!

If you’re prepared to harness the power of Jund and unleash Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper on your playgroup, check out the tabs below!

Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper has the unique ability to turn non-token creatures like Reassembling Skeleton into 3/1, hasty, tokens when they die. Sek’s ability can also work on animated-lands or morph creatures, people typically avoid these kind of strategies but I think this is where Sek truly shines!

Here’s an example:

Converting lands into creatures en mass is not a strategy people see every day so the element of surprise is on our side!

Here are the land-animators:

Life/Death is a powerhouse in this deck. Pair it with Jokulhaups and Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper and you have yourself an easy GG. Don't underestimate the Death side of this spell either, I've resurrected Titania, Protector of Argoth or Sek'Kuar with it many times.

Natural Affinity is a trap card in many ways. Using this in response to an opponents Wrath of God will make them reconsider their life decisions.

Sometimes we have to utilize sac outlets to take out our animated lands or just to exploit Sek'Kuar's ability to it's fullest.

Here are the sac outlets:

Emrakul’s Evangel is an absolute all star! This little guy can turn our lands into 3/2, murderface, Eldrazi tokens. Combine him with Sek and you can nab yourself a two for one special on land-creature sacrifices!

Birthing Pod and Evolutionary Leap are handy ways to convert our weaker creatures into bigger, badder ones. Both have abilities that can be activated at instant speed in response to wraths and trigger Sek for extra token goodness.

As awesome as Sek’Kuar is he can’t do it all on his own. That’s why he’s invited a few friends to the land destruction party:

Titania, Protector of Argoth is an absolute beast! If you thought 3/1 tokens were cool, just wait until you start mass producing 5/3 tokens! Her ETB trigger isn't bad either, getting extra Bojuka Bog triggers is always nice.

The Gitrog Monster is extea card draw every turn, refills our hand when we wrath the board, and is a 6/6 deathtouch to boot!

Git-gud Frog as he's better known is the backbone of this deck and is instrumental to our overall success. He's the first creature I dig for with cards like Worldly Tutor or Time of Need.

Crucible of Worlds and Ramunap Excavator are our insurance policies. They also pair really well with Strip Mine, setting up this lock at the beginning of the game can eliminate people from the onset.

As awesome as all this carnage is, sometimes it won’t benefit you in anyway to destroy everything. For situations like this we have a backup plan:

Infinite Combo Alert please proceed to the next tab...

Every deck needs a backup plan and Sek's is a four part combo involving:

Here's the basic rundown of how these cards sync together:

  • Cryptolith Rite let's us tap Nether Traitor for a which we'll float and use to pay for Nether's own ability later.

  • Saccing Nether Traitor to Ashnod's Altar sets us up with and a 3/1, hasty, Graveborn token thanks to Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper.

  • At this point we should have in our mana pool and Nether Traitor in our graveyard.

  • Since our Graveborn token has haste we can use it to make one mana of any color with Cryptolith Rite before saccing it to Ashnod's Altar, nabbing us another .

  • Tokens technically hit the graveyard when they die, this means we can use the we floated earlier to resurrect Nether Traitor.

  • Nether Traitor reenters with haste, meaning we can tap him for more mana, sac him, and keep this loop going for as long as we please.

  • This combo generates infinite mana of any color and infinite ETB and LTB triggers.

So how does this combo actually win games?

1. Grim Haruspex sets us up to draw a card every time we sac Nether Traitor, which means we can draw out our whole deck, set up our land destruction pieces and win.

2. Ogre Slumlord gives us infinite 1/1, deathtouch rats.

3. Tempt with Vengeance and Torment of Hailfire are great outlets for our infinite mana.

Coming soon this section will feature MTGO gameplay videos of this decklist! Sek'Kuar's on a quest to conquer the multiverse, one game at a time!

Updates Add

I've learned a lot playtesting this deck over the past few weeks. The strategy itself is very solid and when I execute it properly it's an instant win. I've been encountering a lot of salt from my playgroup over the deck, which was expected, but is still annoying.

Sek'Kuar struggles heavily against quick combo decks and control builds. Cyclonic Rift is an absolute blowout card against this strategy, which is why I've started sideboarding in Red Elemental Blast and Pyroblast against blue heavy pods.

However, this Sek'Kuar wrecks creature heavy decks. Token decks, Voltron decks, etc. all suffer anytime they face the Land Destroyer himself. I have too many board wipes at my disposal and it's tough for aggro decks to prevent them all.

The "Maybeboard" has become more of a "Cards to Playtest" section. I'm particularly curious about Zuran Orb and Squandered Resources. I think they have the potential to be stupid good in this deck.

Over the course of the last ten games I've finished with an overall record of 6-4. There's been some good, some bad but overall I'm very happy with how this deck has turned out.
