Tier 1? - Rhonas Jund Midrange

Standard* Aggro BRG (Jund) Competitive Midrange

Creature (1)

This deck is simply powerful. It is hard to stop, very consistent, and has answers to every popular strategy. Jund colors allow us to be the aggressor in every match-up, while still having room for the best removal spells in standard. The meta shifting, along with the god Rhonas the Indomitable give the deck a great position. While other players are trying to control you with 4-mana removal spells or aggro you down with 1-drops or janky-combos, you will consistently curve out the biggest threats and removal at every mana cost 1-5.

If we are playing against a combo deck, we will win very fast. Fatal Push , Harnessed Lightning , and Unlicensed Disintegration stop opposing aggro strategies and Saheeli Rai decks, while Rhonas the Indomitable , Tireless Tracker ,Heart of Kiran and Scrapheap Scrounger make it hard for control to remove all threats and get a card advantage. Main board we are built to out-last and out-race any strategy.

Sideboard allows us to make our aggro or control match ups even stronger. Spicy cards like Fling and Bristling Hydra make control players flip the table, while Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet and additional Fatal Push ensure other aggro decks, even graveyard based, do not out race us.

A few tips

  • play Heart of Kiran first. If it dies it's okay, legendary rule can keep us from playing extras.

  • You can crew Heart of Kiran even when Greenbelt Rampager bounces. Sometimes I do it on purpose so I can replay the elephant, leaving it up to crew heart defensively.

  • Don't forget Verdurous Gearhulk is an artifact, and so are your clues! Unlicensed Disintegration

  • Cracking clues and Evolving Wilds triggers revolt

  • Fling in the sideboard allows us to have our creatures do dmg to face/creatures instead of dying to removal. Red's version of a counterspell :P Also Fling sacrifices as part of the casting cost, so they can NOT respond to you casting it and kill your creature. It can only be blue counter-spelled :)

If you like the deck and you are out there keepin' it real, smash that upvote :)

8 Ways to fetch basics, but only 6 basics. I would cut an Evolving wild and add an other basic.

BTW. I run a Jund Midrange. Jund is great in the current standard

jwal1983 thanks for the input! I may make that change. I think if I draw all 4 evolving wilds and 2 attunes, or 3+ attunes im losing the game anyways. but ill do the maths and see how often that happens. I totally see what u mean tho, thanks!

I like it, very well made with my "playtesting"(Playtest feature against some decks already in standard) Gonna say I may just put Bontu the Glorified in here just because she is my favorite god and for the meme.

How much better did Jund get with Rhonas? Words can't even say. Cant wait for FNM.

Even though it will be much harder on the mana base, I think you are going to need Grasp of Darkness over Harnessed Lightning if Gideon of the Trials takes off like everyone thinks it will

The creature base is kind of weird. You have Rhonas that requires a power 4+ creature to attack/block but don't have a single creature with that much native attack power.

The only way you can make Rhonas attack/block is by having a crewed Heart, have a Tireless Tracker in play with +1+1 counters, use the 3CMC ability on Rhonas or play Verdurous Gearhulk on turn 5+. Doesn't seem right. It's more hoops to jump through than I personally would want in a creature deck like this. I don't want to pay 3CMC to buff a creature, only to have it get removed and I then still can't attack/block with Rhonas if you know what I mean. Seems too narrow. Why not have Bristling Hydra at least in the main so that you have a 4 power creature that can also protect itself.

Noctem Here is what I do. If you do not have a gearhulk/kiran/tracker+1, use his ability main-phase on any creature. Now he is a creature too.

Also, many times you do not play him turn 3 because you need to start playing your removal spells. He's just as good later as he is turn 3 because they might be unprepared to deal with him by then.

Bristling Hydra very well may go to the main board, however it is not an artifact, trample, and does not have pseudo-haste like Verdurous Gearhulk does

Yes but the opponent can simply respond to your activation and kill the creature you're targeting. So now you spent 3 mana and got nothing. You can't even attack with Rhonas. Even if you move into combat phase, the opponent can still respond this way and stop you from attacking or defending. So it's not as great as seem to think imo.

Lambholt Pacifist  Flip is quite a good way of activating Rhonas.

Just saying.

As was said, I've been playtesting and Rhonas the Indomitable is not easy enough to put online.

Most of your strategies require at least two steps to achieve this.

You should either go with a Heart of Kiran strategy or a Rhonas the Indomitable strategy, not both at once.

The beauty of Mardu Vehicles is that just about every Creature in that deck could Crew Heart of Kiran.

You need a similar strategy with Rhonas the Indomitable.

I've suggested Lambholt Pacifist  Flip but swapping your colours to Abzan would let you use Always Watching , and make things much easier.

This is not a Tier 1 deck. Not yet.

I would take that out of the title for now. It has not been earned.

Would you have a problem with me linking to your deck in my Sideboard notes?

It might end up driving some extra traffic your way, but will also tell people how to Board against you.

Argeaux You make all valid points. Knowing the limitations of the problem however gives us the power to play around that. While I considered Lambholt Pacifist  Flip , Greenwheel Liberator , and even Lupine Prototype, I found that these cards are just weak if I did not draw a Rhonas. Playing 4 Rhonas means you draw multiples pretty often... To get around this I play a good deck on its own, and let 3x Rhonas increase its finishing power / evade removal. This means I do NOT play rhonas turn 3. He is most effective turn 5! :) That way you have killed some/all of their threats, you untap, and even if you are empty handed pump/pump (preferably 2 diff. dudes) and win.

In summary I understand your concern, I think it is simply a deck-builing and play-style preference. I do not use Rhonas turn 3 unless there is nothing else to do. In that case, I will do everything I can >> Heart/trackerclue/pump to make him a creature if i need to.

You always have great criticisms and are consistent with your knowledge, up-to-date meta sense. Thank you!

I've been playtesting this for a bit on XMage, and I will say I've almost constantly been Sideboarding (believe it or not) Scrapheap scrounger for Kalitas/Hydra(with some Fatal Push for creature heavy decks) Rhonas I have found somewhat not too difficult to turn on, and I believe Lambholt Pacifist  Flip would work magnificently with this deck

April 20, 2017 8:25 p.m.

Argy says... #16

Hey TheBooman are people not playing Magma Spray and Scarab Feast to deal with Scrapheap Scrounger?

I've got those in the decks I'm planning to run during AHK.

Apparently getting Rhonas online is not the goal of this deck.

I don't really know why. It's a bit of a game changer.

TheBooman says... #17

Yeah no one is running them against me. Its weird if you ask me. But I have seen rhonas played a lot on there around a similar strat.

So much lovely removal, have you thought about Goblin Dark-Dwellers so you can do it all over again? Also another enabler.

I think that Champion of Rhonas would be good. Having 2 Verdurous Gearhulk in hand and casting two in a turn...

You don't cast the creature you put into play via champion to be clear. But ETB triggers will go off.

I've been play testing this against Watching Glory, which is another archetype I predict will emerge in standard.
