Jori-En, Stormtrooper Commander

Commander / EDH UR (Izzet)

Bateserade

Saw a budget Jori-En Deck, and figured I'd take a shot at making my own. What Spawned is the Jori-En Stormtrooper Commander deck.

Borrowing concepts from the Zada deck seen on Commander's Quarters Youtube channel, I wanted to make a deck that is less focused and more casual. My playgroup is very casual, often sporting decks under $50, we mainly just play for fun and for cool shit to happen.

The Commander

Jori-En provides value without being an in your face type threat, so she'll be left alone on the board to do her own thing. She's never going to win you games because of her ability, but she's going to allow you to draw an extra card almost every turn after she comes into play. This deck can win without her on the field, but she helps bring consistency to it.

The Troopers

We've got loads of token producers in this deck. Either as a spell itself, or through a creatures ability. We'll usually end up with 2 of them on the field by turn 6 as we slowly build up our token army. We're again not trying to be aggressive here. Mainly we'll be using the tokens to block if someone decides they want to take a shot at us, but again we're most likely going to pass under the radar since we don't have big threats. At least for the moment.

The Catalysts

Zada, Hedron Grinder . Mirrorwing Dragon . Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer . When we want our token army to go, these are the ones responsible for making it happen. There is a Goblin Recruiter in the deck to help bring Zada out if we're not drawing either of these three. Most games you'll be able to draw one. As soon as this hits the field around turn 6 or so, people are going to start paying attention to you, so we'll need to act fast.

The Storm

We've got one of our catalysts out on the field, about 3+ token army, maybe more, but now it's time to go to work. We're going to want to start firing our buff spells into our catalyst and letting them buff up our token army. If we've got copy spells available ( Narset's Reversal on an Isochron Scepter perhaps), this is going to become dangerous fast. But if they've let you set that up, your opponents are most likely already dead. Buff up that catalyst, make that token army scary and swing for all it's worth into your opponents. You'll most likely get at least 1 kill, Ideally 2.

If we're not in a position to go off on a big storm with one of our catalysts on the field, we can still start rolling mini storms of copied buffs onto our token army using cards like Beamsplitter Mage and Narset's Reversal

If you have Thousand Year Storm, only play it if you're ready to go off. Otherwise, you pretty much sky rocket to threat level midnight in everyone's eyes as soon as that hits the table.

Plan B

Your buddies know the storm is coming and are able to lock you down. They're able to kill off your catalysts. Not to worry we have backup plans.

Guttersnipe , Ral, Storm Conduit , and Niv-Mizzet, Parun , will do some straight nuking for us. We'll fall back to playing a more control type of approach, while drawing cards and playing cantrips. We'll wait to use a Crush of Tentacles to wipe the board and give us an advantage.

If you've lasted this long and spent most of your cantrips and buff spells already. A good ol' Rise from the Tides is sure to turn some heads when it happens.

Final Thoughts

I've been really liking this deck. Yes, it's playing similar to a storm or combo deck, but I find when people are getting smacked in the face with loads of minions they find it either a) hilarious or b) unexpected from the Jori-En player. Ultimately, we are a storm and traditional Izzet deck, but with more of a Timmy twist.
